Advising against ‘elaborate’ summer holidays, even in the UK

Just saw this on twitter, after I read something about it on another thread on here.

I thought they were pushing for uk holidays this year to boost tourism?
Also even last summer we could go away in the UK? Surely with the vaccine things will be much better by summer. I’m really confused by it all.

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages

Apparently MNHQ has deleted my post for not toeing the line and heaping praise upon Jonathan Van Tam Hmm Yeah, I'm still thoroughly pissed off at the idea that they've destroyed my business, left me with fuck all government support and then want to remove the last affordable sort of holiday available - a holiday cottage with multiple people from multiple households. I can't afford a holiday cottage that's just me / support bubble.

These scientists can go fuck themselves. They wouldn't be making the same decisions if it was their own livelihoods they were destroying.

Youve lost your income so are making risky holiday plans which might fall through?

Okay then.

rawalpindithelabrador · 09/02/2021 00:37

They're all going to go off on their hols or to their holiday homes.

KriekAndWaffle · 09/02/2021 00:42

Hahaha they are such dickheads. They can’t even get decent quarantine sorted a year after other countries have managed it and they think they can dictate to us on U.K. travel? Come on.

You just know they'll find some excuse to travel the same way Stanley had two doses of the vaccine in record time.

Okay then.

Last time it was £60 each been 8 of us, for a long weekend.

A holiday cottage in the UK shouldn't be considered risky. Destroying people's sanity should.

CallmeAngelina · 09/02/2021 09:25

@tessiegirl

Makes me laugh. People are so thick. If you are booking a holiday to Spain for example don't bother!!! Nothing is going to be open!
I sometimes wonder about the intelligence of those who call others "thick." There are all sorts of reasons why people might want to holiday in Spain. Not everyone wants to cram into cafes, bars and nightclubs.
RedGoldAndGreene · 09/02/2021 12:18

A holiday cottage in the UK shouldn't be considered risky. Destroying people's sanity should.

Some people would say that it was over promising if they didn't tell people to keep plans simple. The scientists don't know what ministers might have as rules and hopefully they've learned from Xmas and not announce things too far in advance. Even Johnson added lots of caveats about the 22 Feb roadmap explaining that it's "if data allows" plan with dates subject to change if necessary.

I think uk holidays will happen but the risk is guessing how many households/people in each property.

£60 for 8 people sounds very reasonable as insurance.

tessiegirl · 09/02/2021 23:05

Oh totally thick me!!! GrinHmm

Well, in fairness, you started it, by calling others thick.

They should put out a roadmap - for instance, UK self catering holidays allowed, you can mix up to 6 households from 15th April - 30th September, so long as you're not self isolating. Then state they'll reassess for the autumn based on vaccine progress etc.

The £60 holiday cottage isn't an insurance option, it's the goal. It's all I have any chance of affording.

The lack of a roadmap is destroying businesses too. One aspect of my business is weddings - a couple of days ago I had a couple postpone from June 2021 to 2023 because they don't know whether or not they'll be allowed their wedding. I cried.

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2021 10:18

Well given we are getting some type of road map about how how and when things might start reopening on February 22nd, i guess thats fortunate then.

TorringtonDean · 10/02/2021 11:09

I totally understand the reasons for travel band and quarantine hotels. However, this is the thing that has most crushed my morale. I think I could take all the rest but the idea it might be years before I travel to another country is soul destroying. I don’t blame the government, I blame Covid. I long for an escape though - it’s the holidays I most looked forward to.

vera99 · 10/02/2021 11:33

They can say what they like but a load of people who have been perfect up till now will do what they do. I'm shocked at how many of my family friends are going guerilla for the summer if needs be.

Coffeepot72 · 10/02/2021 11:43

I would also like to see a roadmap, even if it's got lots of conditions, provisos and caveats. I would also like a few days in a self catering cottage over Easter, just me and DH!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/02/2021 11:45

There's no proper outline of what sectors it will include - and it will be full of caveats - "we hope" "if" etc.

We need some guarantees so we can PLAN our lives, our businesses, our livelihoods.

I don't think the virus gives any gurantees

tootyfruitypickle · 10/02/2021 12:43

Lots of Airbnbs have free cancellation. We've booked one in Scotland. Just holding off on flights until nearer the time - even if they end up costing more I can't be doing with the faffing of changing like last year

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 10/02/2021 12:58

We would really like to go to a cottage at Easter
I think they might well wait til after as so many of us will want to travel then.

Kokeshi123 · 10/02/2021 13:06

I want to know what an "elaborate" holiday is. Does it involve love triangles, panting-by-numbers and wearing a long frilly dress with millions of tiny hooks and eyes up the back?

TorringtonDean · 10/02/2021 13:19

Can you eat a scotch egg on an elaborate holiday?

vera99 · 10/02/2021 13:21

This is obviously orff.... (sic)

Lurkingforawhile · 10/02/2021 13:22

I missed the bit about elaborate holidays (I was listening to Grant Shapps) but we've already booked for June. Staying in the same home nation, one household, self catering. Seems about as low risk as you can get. Their covid policy is really good as well in terms of rebooking. I just needed something to look forward to.

miimblemomble · 10/02/2021 13:22

I don’t understand why people would book a holiday right now

Because by July 2021 DH and I won't have seen our families for over a year and a half by that point! Not every trip is a holiday. I have zero desire to do anything frivolous or "elaborate": I just want to get my children and their (vaccinated) grandparents in the same place. I don't care if we go nowhere and do nothing. But I do want to go if it is at all possible, and we have re-booked last years cancelled flights for summer 2021.

Lurkingforawhile · 10/02/2021 13:27

**I don’t understand why people would book a holiday right now

Because there is absolutely nothing else to look forward to. Provided you cover off the risk with insurance or the company providing a good covid policy then why not. It's keeping me sane.

m0therofdragons · 10/02/2021 13:32

Most of us (people I know) have moved 2020 holiday to 2021. I’m supposed to be going to Florida - 3 households from DH’s family in separate apartments. I’m hopeful but dh less so. I’ve been vaccinated and Pils and Bil will have been by august but dh and sil won’t (Plus dc). I live for travel so this is killing me. My family are also spread across the world. As soon as I can I’m booking flights to see them!
