Advising against ‘elaborate’ summer holidays, even in the UK

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/brits-warned-against-elaborate-summer-23464800

Just saw this on twitter, after I read something about it on another thread on here.

I thought they were pushing for uk holidays this year to boost tourism?
Also even last summer we could go away in the UK? Surely with the vaccine things will be much better by summer. I’m really confused by it all.

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

There isn't a single chance in hell that people like Piers Morgan, Julia Hartley-Brewer, Stanley Johnson, Grant Shapps and so on, won't be making 'elaborate summer holiday plans'. They'll all be off to Mauritius or their summer residences as soon as they are able, and probably even when they aren't able.
You are right the plebs will get grounded and the rich and famous will do whatever they please. Remember Stanley Johnson went to his Greek bolthole via Bulgaria last year when Greece had vetoed direct flights from the UK.
Coffeepot72 · 08/02/2021 21:55

We’ve booked a cottage in Wales for the end of August - surely (?) we should be travel to Wales from England by then … ?

JaninaDuszejko · 08/02/2021 21:57

We can still see friends and family borage but I guess it will be like last summer, mainly for a few hours outside being careful with toilets etc.

Well last summer I saw no members of my family because they live 500 miles away and across an internal UK border, it has now been 18 months since I saw them. So how many years do people like me have to go without seeing our families before you are happy? My neighbours see different members of their families every fucking day. They are the problem, not me possibly seeing my Mum in August for the first time in two years.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 08/02/2021 22:08

We have booked Cornwall for Easter 2022! (Cant afford summer and have a favourite cottage so thought we'd get in early.)

Have a different cottage booked this Easter I was sure would go ahead when I booked it.... hmm..😔

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 08/02/2021 22:09

Well we managed to get away last summer so can't see why I can't this summer
Also have family to see that live too far to go for a day , like others have said its been a while already , whats the point of having vaccines if we can't do some things like visit family even if it still with caution, i have to go to work

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 08/02/2021 22:11

@toocold54 how fo you know next year will be better ? I mean if vaccine etc you don't think will make a difference this year , then why next year

PokemonTrainerRed · 08/02/2021 22:12

The tone wasn't "Don't do it", it was more "don't expect it to definitely happen"

Poppystars · 08/02/2021 22:16

My concern is everyone has a great summer, cases rise and schools close again in the autumn. Sad

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 08/02/2021 22:18

But 99% of deaths shpuld he saved by vaccinating the top 9 groups, so shouldn't we be okay ish then?

Coffeepot72 · 08/02/2021 22:23

If the top 9 groups are vaccinated by the end of April, and therefore most potential fatalities will be prevented, I would be expecting uk travel should be permitted?

Coffeepot72 · 08/02/2021 22:24

@TryingNotToPanicOverCovid sorry I think I just repeated what you said!

ManyMaybes · 08/02/2021 22:30

Why is everyone so endlessly negative? Last summer was fine - I went to Italy in August and I plan to do the same this year. Deaths will probably plummet from March once the vaccine kicks in and be low through the warmer months. The new vaccines will be ready to go for next winter to address the variants (which seem to all be quite similar) so winter should also be much better than this year. I have flights to South Africa booked for December and I’m optimistic :)

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 08/02/2021 22:30

You added April! I'd love to be free in April. Hopeful look.

Guineapigsarepigs · 08/02/2021 22:36

Me too JaninaDuszejko . I last saw my family in summer 2019.

venusandmars · 08/02/2021 22:55

It's not just about booking a holiday with extended family or multiple households, it's also about whether other facilities will be open to support an increase in tourism. Restaurants, bars, tourist attractions? All still managing with reduce physical contact.

Last year thousands of people rented campervans or motorhomes, or bought tents. But the infrastructure wasn't open to support that, and in some places it was a nightmare.

ktp100 · 08/02/2021 23:08

If this is to be the last lockdown, restrictions must be relaxed very slowly and data watched closely, vaccine or not.

We're already paying for bloody Christmas, I'd rather we all miss out on holidays this year and this shitshow be well and truly over.

You know, like in other countries where it's already over because people do as they're feckin told and their leaders have the balls to make decisions in a timely fashion.

MoirasRoses · 08/02/2021 23:14

We’ve booked 2x U.K. breaks, one with each set of parents. Fully refundable or moveable so why not. Nothing to lose. One is in Wales which was maybe an error if they impose different restrictions but either way, we’ll get a holiday even if we can’t go with other people. Be bloody incredible to not be in our house 😂 also got a short break at CP booked in separate lodges to friends. I guess we’ll bump into each other outdoors if we aren’t allowed in each other’s cabins.

No way holidays will be cancelled. No way at all. They weren’t last year & we’ll be in a better position this year. Boris is a populist. He’ll open up come Spring/Summer one way or another.

RedToothBrush · 08/02/2021 23:22

They are worried about people going nuts this summer and meeting hundreds of people to make up for the last year.

They are concerned about the Eeek variants (the SA one and the home grow mutated kent variant which has popped up in Bristol and Liverpool).

They really want to keep a lid on it whilst we get the vaccine out there (remember lots of the population wont get a first shot until june or july and there is still a second one to go) and they want a variant adapted jab to be on the cards.

If you were keen to avoid a repeat of last year and how going into autumn things went tits up very quickly, youd have your finger over the button of very localised shutdowns which were very hard and strict. And youd discourage massive parties and meet ups into 2022. Thats not 'don't see friends and family', more dont see everyone and his dog, the neighbours and all their mates and the mates of all the family at the caravan next to yours.

Its expectation management as much as anything. We are going to be told to be sensible rather than losing the plot (this is the uk. Lots of people are going to lose their minds this summer).

Personally ive booked something less than an hour away which is unfashionable. I really just don't want to have to deal with the huge number of people who are going to act like bellends this summer.

I want time away, but the thought of going to Cornwall like everyone else and getting stuck in the mother of all traffic jams - and considering the limited hospital facilities there - na no thanks.

RedToothBrush · 08/02/2021 23:30

@CallmeAngelina

It would be more annoying not booking something, waiting until June and then finding everywhere in the UK is booked out, because no one can travel abroad.
This.

The issue with travel abroad is less about whether the virus is under control here and more to do with what the situation will be abroad. I believe parts of Europe are about two months behind us on this wave ans and cases may not peak until end of April. Thats going to take a long time to get back under comtrol. Plus vaccine role out is at least 6 weeks behind us.

If we are looking at 'normality' in the uk in June, thats going to be a push to be ready for the peak in August.

Plus theres the politics of brexit. If movement is allowed in the eu, we may be afterthoughts that come later rather thsn than being allowed back first.

tessiegirl · 08/02/2021 23:31

Makes me laugh. People are so thick.
If you are booking a holiday to Spain for example don't bother!!! Nothing is going to be open!

rawalpindithelabrador · 08/02/2021 23:40

I'm going to drive to see friends.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 09/02/2021 00:22

Apparently MNHQ has deleted my post for not toeing the line and heaping praise upon Jonathan Van Tam Hmm Yeah, I'm still thoroughly pissed off at the idea that they've destroyed my business, left me with fuck all government support and then want to remove the last affordable sort of holiday available - a holiday cottage with multiple people from multiple households. I can't afford a holiday cottage that's just me / support bubble.

These scientists can go fuck themselves. They wouldn't be making the same decisions if it was their own livelihoods they were destroying.

Katie517 · 09/02/2021 00:25

UK holidays will happen (Boris has his G7 meeting in Cornwall in June with people from all over the world) I think abroad will happen from July time. It happened last year no reason why not this year with vaccines. Variants existed last year we just weren’t obsessed with looking for them. Im going on a UK break in June with 2 other families and with my in-laws in july and hopefully abroad in August and September.

The comment today at the briefing taken out of context by doom mongering lockdown lovers who froth at the thought of anyone daring to enjoy life again. Basically they said it’s too early to tell and the more elaborate your plans the more likely they could have to change. That’s all.

inquietant · 09/02/2021 00:26

Assume it was simply the addition of the words 'and die'. I nearly reported then didn't, but I think wishing death on people is a bit much. Those people are getting real death threats just for telling the truth.
inquietant · 09/02/2021 00:27

Boris has his G7 meeting in Cornwall in June with people from all over the world yes I wondered about this recently, do we think Macron will attend? Will Biden be travelling?
