Advising against ‘elaborate’ summer holidays, even in the UK

Just saw this on twitter, after I read something about it on another thread on here.

I thought they were pushing for uk holidays this year to boost tourism?
Also even last summer we could go away in the UK? Surely with the vaccine things will be much better by summer. I’m really confused by it all.

JVT's job is to focus on health and so he's not going to be anything other than cautious. He can't start promising holidays before we get to a better place, he's focused on vaccine uptake and compliance with isolation rules.

I personally have holiday booked for August, I'm looking forward to it, but it can be moved to next year easily if needs be.

The worst case scenario in my opinion is that we'll be in a similar position in the summer to last summer but with borders closed. Best case will be freedom to gather in the UK with some foreign travel allowed.

Hope for the best, prepared for the worst.

Not missing the point - just using common sense. If we haven’t been anywhere for months and know we don’t have Covid there is no risk of spreading Covid if you go on holiday “together” in separate accommodations. Or even in the same accommodation. Obviously some people won’t want to do that as they are happy to live their lives in perpetual lockdown and following the “rules”.

Once the vulnerable are vaccinated I certainly won’t be stopping my family from taking absolutely minuscule “risks” any longer. The adults have had Covid anyway and we’re fine. People must start making their own minds up about what is risky or not and realise the virus is here to stay. The point is to protect the NHS. Which is highly likely to be back to normal levels by summer.

lunapeace · 08/02/2021 20:02

Vulnerable vaccinated, job done. How will anyone know if you are separate household anyway. Fuck them. They're not taking another summer away from me.

His lines will have been agreed with government though, in general terms.

I won’t be booking anything, I couldn’t bare the apprehension, nervous anticipation, having to cancel... it’ll take all the fun out of it! I’d rather enjoy my time making small scale plans, as and when they’re possible. It’ll feel like a holiday if any mixing can happen- even just rule of 6 outside or low key mixing indoors. And with a few things being open, it’ll be even better!

inquietant · 08/02/2021 20:09

I don't think it's ok to be that unpleasant in language towards him. He's trying to be honest with people, it isn't his fault this isn't controllable.

@inquietant he doesn't even have final say so yes I have booked I need to at least have some hope, if we are not allowed then my money will be refunded so no problem, if not i have a holiday and place booked as can't be doing with last minute

SilverGlitterBaubles · 08/02/2021 20:15

They are just about to announce testing for arrivals to the UK and quarantine hotels, I don't think talk of holidays abroad are compatible with this.

That's your prerogative, and no concern of mine.

Im going to Brazil and South Africa! I’m not timid and a Johnson drone!!!!!
Good on you! You could collect variants as souvenirs Grin
CeeJay81 · 08/02/2021 20:22

We moved a Haven booking from last year to this Summer but decided to cancel. I can't imagine enjoying haven, i'm wondering if it'll just be hideaway breaks again, can't imagine how the entertainment can go on as normal and that's all part of the fun. Instead I've just booked a flat on air b n b is close to family in another part of the uk. If we can go to the Zoo or something fun while we are there, then that's a bonus

User7458 · 08/02/2021 20:24

We have booked our caravan in for a week quite near where DS lives so hope to be able to meet him for a day out or two. We have also booked other caravan sites in England in hope of going but we don't lose any money if it's cancelled. We have also booked a week near where DF lives so hope to be able to visit him too

CosmicComfort · 08/02/2021 20:28

DH and I are going to Whitby😎

Very low risk really, self catering in a cottage and just the two of us. We are antisocial as they come so don’t intend to see anyone and we will be forced to cook if the pubs aren’t open but fully intend to go and enjoy a week away. This is august.

You might be going, you mean. Just because you're not a "Johnson drone" doesn't mean that you can break the law.
Blondiney · 08/02/2021 20:47

@Porcupineintherough

Well if by elaborate they mean multi household holidays with people coming from all over the country then surely common sense would tell you that that sort of arrangement is more vulnerable to changes in circumstances?
Common sense isn't that common, sadly.

Gosh you are hilarious. Making light of other people's suffering is so witty.
Cherrysherbet · 08/02/2021 20:56

We won’t be going away this year. It’s too risky, and it’s the responsible thing to do to stay put.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/02/2021 20:56

There isn't a single chance in hell that people like Piers Morgan, Julia Hartley-Brewer, Stanley Johnson, Grant Shapps and so on, won't be making 'elaborate summer holiday plans'. They'll all be off to Mauritius or their summer residences as soon as they are able, and probably even when they aren't able.

justanotherneighinparadise · 08/02/2021 20:58

We’ve booked a UK holiday end of July but it had covid insurance attached so if we can’t go we can rebook at a later date.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/02/2021 21:00

We live in N Wales and are going to stay in S Wales so whatever restrictions are in place at home are also in place there - so less likely to be stuck in a situation where we can't travel, but the holiday rental is open so not refuding etc.

We've also only booked a cottage, just for us and the DC to stay in so no extra mixing compared to normal. Just a nicer place and a different view for the week.

There are insurance policies that will cover a uk break and cover you for if anyone in your party contracts covid meaning you can't travel, which doesn't cover for all eventuallities, but does provide a slight extra bit of financial reassurance. If we have a lockdown or travel ban the cottage company should be under the same restrictions and should move our booking.
