Covid vaccine safe?

Duemarch2021 · 06/02/2021 23:53

Dad had the covid vaccine today and i was originally really happy about it as he is 71 and has very severe asthma ..I was terrified that if he caught covid he wouldn't make it... but now I'm starting to worry that in a few years time, we will all be hearing that the vaccine wasn't safe and that its causing problems in people who have been injected!.. anybody else worrying about this or AIBU?

I am counting down until my parents get it. The chances of a long term health impact of a vaccine are vanishingly small, we have so much evidence that vaccination is safe and effective and I have no doubt that vaccines for covid-19 will be the same. At 71 and with severe asthma your dad’s risk from covid is outweighed hugely (and I mean absolutely hugely) by any potential long term risk that may be posed by a vaccine.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/02/2021 00:10

So you'd prefer everyone to live in lockdown for the next ten years just in case?
The vaccines have been clinically tested.
As have several drugs that reduce anxiety.

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/02/2021 00:10

Not being unkind but why are you borrowing worry from the future?

YABU.

LagunaBubbles · 07/02/2021 00:12

You either have an anxiety problem or you are brj g goady.

housemdwaswrong · 07/02/2021 00:14

I'm not, no. I have the flu vaccine every year and pneumonia vaxcine every 5, no ill effects. I've had vaccines for travel with no ill effects. These vaccines are being rolled out globally. I'd struggle with covid and I haven't struggled from the vaccine. If they find side effects in 20 years time, so be it. I'm not likely to drop dead from a 20 year latent side effect so I'd deal with it. Highly highly unlikely though.

Saz12 · 07/02/2021 00:14

The last 11 months have been perfect for inducing health anxiety.

OP, the vaccine is safe. Safer than driving a car, being a pedestrian, etc.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 07/02/2021 00:15

Do you worry in the same way about any other vaccine you or your family take? If not, there is no reason to have additional concerns about these vaccines.

They have not been "rushed through" regulatory approval in any way that affects the rigour of the process and there are lots of explanations about this freely available.

LadyMayoGoodway · 07/02/2021 00:30

I have diagnosed health anxiety, I was nearly sectioned whilst pregnant as it got so bad.

What you described has oddly not crossed my mind.....therefore I think this could possibly be a goady AV post.

Twistered · 07/02/2021 00:35

To be blunt .... Your dad's risk of dying from Covid greatly outweigh any other risks at all. Be glad he's had it Flowers

Pipandmum · 07/02/2021 00:39

Any problems with the vaccine will show up pretty much immediately (sore arm and or mild flu symptoms in some for example). It's not like thalidomide or anything.

Duemarch2021 · 07/02/2021 00:48

I'm assuming posters who have called me "goady" mean "gaudy"!???

Yes .. that's exactly what im doing.. I'm "showing off" Hmm .. what an odd thing to accuse me of..

Thank you to everyone else who has been kind on the thread and helping with my anxiety of the injection 😊 you are right... the benefits should surely outweigh any side effects.. was just thinking back to years ago when people were given injections and then it was realised they weren't actually safe... Yes I was worried they had been 'rushed through' .. and no i didn't once suggest that 'I'd rather everyone live in lockdown instead' I'm assuming some of you have had a wine and fancy an argument Hmm anyway.. off to bed Flowers

For what it's worth,I honestly don't think that the covid vaccination is any more likely to cause problems further down the line,be it in one year,5 years or 20 years time, than any of the other many vaccinations that most people have these days. I've had a 'flu vaccination every year for the last 25 years, and if it was going to cause any problems,it has yet to show itself. I'm having my Covid vaccination tomorrow (I'm ECV) and I'm over the moon! Honestly didn't expect it quite so soon.

idontlikealdi · 07/02/2021 01:02

No they mean goady.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 07/02/2021 01:08

Please try not to worry about it. We've got enough on our plates for now. I'm absolutely convinced he'll be fine. Really.

No, they mean goady.

This vaccine has not been rushed; there are many sources that explain why things happened within a shorter-than-normal time span, but all of the parts of the process of testing and review were observed.

CrocodilesCry · 07/02/2021 01:22

It's goady. As in provoking a response. Not gaudy.

Theowawaynow · 07/02/2021 01:26

Yes I share your concern, it isn’t based on any sort of fact, but it’s fear of the unknown and the untested over the long term.

I’m worried about my mum who is poorly today as she had the vaccine yesterday, we’ve all had all our jabs and never got ill from any of them so that increases the concern. Why this one?

Having said that the risk of Covid for her at her age is higher than the risk of any vaccine so I’m still pleased she’s had it.

I’m not sure what choice I will be making on it but I’m waaaaay down the list anyway!

Duemarch2021 · 07/02/2021 01:41

Oh ok, so they mean this is a goading thread? As goady isn't a word...

Well no, it's not a goading thread.. I mean, it is to provoke a reaction yes haha as otherwise there would be no point in posting if I wasn't going to get any response, surely?! But as for provoking a reaction in a bad way, no. I don't really understand how this post could provoke anyone to answer with annoyance if I'm honest. I was simply asking if anybody else is worried about possible future repercussions of the vaccine because it has crossed my mind. There's nothing in my post for anyone to be angry about Hmm

I’m not worried at all. The vaccine has been thoroughly tested. I’m counting down the days until my Grandpa, DPs and in-laws have it so that I can breathe easily.

I think this is a scary time and it’s easy to dwell on what-ifs, but vaccines safety needn’t be one of those; it’s a safe, tested vaccine.

PugInTheHouse · 07/02/2021 08:11

I've had it myself, I am definitely not worried, it hasn't been rushed through and it really irritates me that people actually believe this due to reading some idiots posts on FB or listening to morons on breakfast tv rather than actually researching it properly.

Maybe I am being naive but I am not aware of any vaccinations that people are being given that were then found out not to be safe? From what I know any of these concerns were actually debunked.

Anyway, I would rather find out there are awful side effects in 10 years time than live like this for another year.

DinosaurDiana · 07/02/2021 08:13

Yes you are, and no I’m not.

UmbilicusProfundus · 07/02/2021 08:25

In another thread OP you were wondering whether you might have Asperger’s. Have you got any further looking into this?

The vaccine’s safety has been assessed to the same degree as any other vaccine that gets produced. We don’t have enough evidence to be certain about long term efficacy but that is different from safety. Yes you can argue we don’t have enough longitudinal evidence for delayed/long-term side-effects but these are vanishing rare for other vaccines and no reason to think this would be any different. And clearly the risks of covid are far greater!

Bilgepumper · 07/02/2021 08:30

Covid is far more dangerous, it’s killing people. That’s the thing to remember.

beela · 07/02/2021 08:35

now I'm starting to worry that in a few years time, we will all be hearing that the vaccine wasn't safe

You are more likely to be around in a few years time if you take the vaccine.

Twistered · 07/02/2021 09:10

was just thinking back to years ago when people were given injections and then it was realised they weren't actually safe

What injections were these?
