Dad had the covid vaccine today and i was originally really happy about it as he is 71 and has very severe asthma ..I was terrified that if he caught covid he wouldn't make it... but now I'm starting to worry that in a few years time, we will all be hearing that the vaccine wasn't safe and that its causing problems in people who have been injected!.. anybody else worrying about this or AIBU?

Interesting keep. Might help if they put that in the ingredients list with an asterix! I’m still not wild about it though due to my religious beliefs.

Any similar comfort you can offer me on the use of GMO monkey cells?

Bedtime reading for you :)

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.news-medical.net/amp/health/What-are-Adenovirus-Based-Vaccines.aspx

We use chimpanzee adenoviruses as a vector (i.e. a vehicle/way to get the vaccine into our bodies) and not human because too many people would likely already have immunity against what is in effect a common cold virus. It’s used in many things, generally low side effects, so this is not new at all.

Regarding cell lines. Many drugs will be tested in 100’s different cell lines before even getting to clinical trials. Clinical trials are VERY expensive so you want as much data up front as you can get (fail early). Some drugs also need to be manufactured within a ‘host’ cell line and HEK293 is very effective at this, hence used by AZ. The Pfizer vaccine is synthetic.

I’m not diminishing your religious beliefs at all just to say what I’ve described is likely the case (either design or manufacture) for many drugs you may have encountered. I’d stress those cell lines have been altered so many times there isn’t just one any more (think variants) and they are tightly licensed.

I work in the industry but not for either company and have my vaccine on Friday :). No concerns ethically or scientifically.

You are too nice for Mumsnet, OP. Certain topics attract vipers!

Thanks keep. Cell lines - are these actual cells taken from the monkey or fetus? Presumably not and they are replicated/grown in some way?

I was offered the Pfizer vaccine through my work the other day and declined as I want to see the longer term data. I am very cautious due to a family member suffering narcolepsy following the swine flu vaccine.

The AZ vaccine I would feel a little more comfortable with but there are reports of delayed side effects. I’m only taking a vaccine to prevent transmission to others and I’m not sure therefore the AZ vaccine is worth it for me.

I’m not anti vaccine at all - but very mistrusting of being told what to do medically for several very valid and historic reasons.

This is certainly in my thoughts. The swine flu vaccine had a proven link to narcolepsy which wasn’t know initially. Only time will tell.

Planetzog · 23/02/2021 06:59

I worry about this too. Around 900 people developed narcolepsy a year after the swine flu vaccine. It's still too early to know whether the covid vaccines cause long term issues like this. I probably will have the vaccine anyway, but people are justified in having concerns.
