NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

I've had a bit of a wobble today with all the reports we won't reach herd immunity with the vaccine. It will stop people getting ill but may not make cases fall. Which is fine because at that point it just becomes another cold but importantly it doesn't stretch the NHS. But will they release us is cases are still high. I suppose in the end they will have to because there will be no economy otherwise but a small part of me is scared of the people who would like to lock down until all causes of mortality are illiminated entirely.

Checking in late again!

Oldtimer2020 · 08/02/2021 07:08

Sarah Gilbert was on Andrew Marr on Sunday morning. She said they already had a designed a booster jab for the SA variant that could be manufactured and ready for the Autumn if it was needed. This reassured me no end. And the fact she said ‘if it was needed’......

tootyfruitypickle · 08/02/2021 07:14

I woke up to R2 headline that AZ rollout was being slowed down. Surprisingly the entire CV board has given me better information and much reassurance !

Plus Adam Fleming on BBC gave a much more sensible analysis.

Sarah Gilbert also said that she couldn't imagine a variant that evaded the vaccine completely just due to the make up of the virus .

tobee · 08/02/2021 07:20

The thread about the SA variant and the AZ vaccine has taken on anti vaxxer whiff

TheChineseChicken · 08/02/2021 07:47

I don’t really know where to post at the moment. I don’t have any good news to share and am honestly really worried about the variants issue (this may be misplaced but it’s how I feel). But every time I try to join in any of the others threads I quickly regret it as you just get ripped to shreds, plus they are too far on the doom side.

I wish someone who actually knows what they are talking about would provide a definitive answer about how concerned we should be. Although maybe the issue is that no one knows.

tobee · 08/02/2021 07:54

No they don't know yet. There is not enough data.

tobee · 08/02/2021 07:57

There have been some people posting calming stuff on this but I can't find them right now as I'm half asleep. Hopefully someone else can link?

Oh hang on, Prof Sarah Gilbert was on Andrew Marr and people found that reassuring.

TheChineseChicken · 08/02/2021 07:59

Thanks, maybe I’ll look for that to watch

starfish88 · 08/02/2021 08:00

I don't think they do know totally yet. Scientists won't say until they are 200% sure and the media will grab whichever makes the best headline.

I think posting here with worries is fine as long as it isn't the instant doom that you get on other threads. At least I hope so because I had a wobble about it too this morning but I think the thing with this thread is that it attracts the positive people and we help each other when everything feels hard. There's a big difference between 'I feel worried' and 'sorry, I'm afraid nothing is ever going to get any better and will almost certainly get much worse, unfortunately'

TheChineseChicken · 08/02/2021 08:05

It’s a shame the AZ study in SA was so shit! Really unrepresentative (young, healthy), small cohort. I’m not sure it achieved much other than stirring up panic.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/02/2021 09:00

Belatedly checking in!

chri55ie · 08/02/2021 09:03

I don’t know why they don’t come out fighting! It’s v odd

Shehz21 · 08/02/2021 09:10

My homecountry(Mauritius)is not going to be giving out the AstraZeneca jab to over 65s. I know I must seem like I have been living under a rock as I didn't know the issue was so widespread except for few european countries not agreeing to give it to their over 65s. Is their a legit reason though or just lack of data with the AZ jab for over 65s?

chri55ie · 08/02/2021 09:13

Lack of data. Though data in phase 2 trials would lead you to assume it would be effective in over 65’s. That’s my take on it! Some one please correct me if that’s wrong!

MadisonAvenue · 08/02/2021 10:04

Just checking in.
Had the AstraZeneca jab on Saturday night and yesterday was a complete write-off due to side effects. Feeling slightly better today until I saw the news.

On a positive note, our small town vaccine clinic vaccinated 1600 people between 8am and 8pm on Saturday!

louisejxxx · 08/02/2021 10:05

I know what you mean @TheChineseChicken - there have been days where I have wanted to express my concern or frustration but don’t want to bring down this thread, nor do I want to engage in an argument or start a debate.

Frazzled2207 · 08/02/2021 10:06

@MadisonAvenue
Sounds like a rough ride but pleased you’re better.
Similarly here, suburban town, the local hub vaccinated 2333 people yesterday alone. They’re not at it every day but that must translate into a very big chunk of the local population (average age here quite high) now had their first dose.

Sevensilverrings · 08/02/2021 10:15

Could none post a link to find out how local vaccine hubs are doing? I’d be really interested to see the local progress if the numbers are available somewhere? Thanks.

Sevensilverrings · 08/02/2021 10:15

Someone, not none. Silly iPad.

Christinaismyperson · 08/02/2021 10:51

I just wanted to add my vaccination side effects report. Had the Pfizer 3 weeks ago (HCP) and the only effect was a slightly sore arm for less then 24 hours. It really wasn’t that sore either. Flu jab and Whooping cough we’re definitely way worse.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 08/02/2021 11:17

Oh the whopping cough one was terrible. I don't know if they hit a nerve or something. Pains running up and down my arm for a week. Couldn't even open a door with that arm it was so ouch.

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/02/2021 11:30

Early days and very small trial but this sounds promising!

apple.news/ACJXehpEST--9L6ryRBhxMA

MadisonAvenue · 08/02/2021 11:35

I had to have a few vaccines on the same day before my splenectomy and have since had the flu jab every year and Pneumovax (sp?) every 5 years and I’ve only ever had a sore arm from any of those.

1990s · 08/02/2021 11:41

People with variant worries... I think there are several reasons to not overly worry.

  • it is not dominant currently
  • in SA where it is dominant, they have not been overrun, cases are still dropping
  • the current vaccine has some effect on it (AZ, as said by Sarah Gilbert, likely same for Pfizer)
  • we dont know how much of an effect, but that doesn’t mean it will be as bad as the MSM is speculating
  • if the vaccine isn’t very effective they are already working on a new version for Autumn that will be
  • in the meantime circulating Covid WILL drop generally due to lockdown and vaccines, so chances of it all going to shit over Spring/Summer are relatively low (see above point about SA cases still dropping)

It’s not what we hoped for, but I honestly don’t think it is terrible either.

Just my 2p.
