Guilt over getting vaccine

DH and I are both teachers. We got a call an hour who from a doctor acquaintance who was doing covid jabs today and they had quite a few spare so they were all contacting teacher contacts to see if they get down to the vaccine centre ASAP. We live 10 minutes away so went immediately. I feel guilty! I feel bad I’ve jumped the queue when we’re in good health. We both are in daily contact with lots of children (I look after Y1/2 key worker kids rather than online teaching) but I feel almost embarrassed to have got it. Would you feel bad? Should I not have taken it?

Definitely you were right to take it as offered and in contact with DCs - I heard that last week in Scotland they had to destroy 145 vaccines so I'd much rather somebody got them than that.

I'd just keep a bit quiet about it though as everyone so touchy about vaccine order at the minute.

giletrouge · 06/02/2021 16:34

I'm 65 not had the jab yet but I'm cheering you on OP! I'm just glad they're not wasting them and VERY glad they're offering them to people doing useful things in the community.
DO NOT FEEL GUILTY!

QueenOfThorns · 06/02/2021 16:35

Please don’t feel bad! It would be far far worse for those jabs to be wasted. And I’m glad the doctors called teachers to have them Smile

Blessex · 06/02/2021 16:36

Uffff no don’t feel guilty. Much better that then throw them away.

Davros · 06/02/2021 16:36

Don't feel guilty. You weren't angling to queue jump, you've been lucky. There's nothing wrong with what you did Thanks

QueenOfLabradors · 06/02/2021 16:37

Please don't feel guilty. And well done to the bright people at the vaccine centre who had the sense to make the calls.

Eccle80 · 06/02/2021 16:37

Don’t feel guilty, they would have been wasted in the bin, and I think most people would be happy to see left overs going to those in contact with lots of people like teachers and police. I think vaccination centres should have a standby list of people like you

PatsyKen · 06/02/2021 16:39

Yes @Eccle80 apparently they’ve managed to do loads of police in last few weeks with extra doses. Thanks all - I just feel bad for those who won’t get it for so long.

No-one should feel guilty for receiving the jab. My DN works in a surgery and had one as there were some spare that had to be used or thrown (patients not turned up). She got some really snide comments from her partners family.

Blessex · 06/02/2021 16:40

@PatsyKen yes but it won’t be long for the rest of us. We are lucky to be in one of the fastest vaccinated countries in the world.

Redcherries · 06/02/2021 16:40

Don’t feel guilty! The only people who should feel shameful are those who jump the queue in a knowing underhand manner. People being contacted to save wasting vaccines is a good thing.

Liskee · 06/02/2021 16:41

I'd rather this happen than they go to waste! I'm all for teachers being prioritised for vaccination and I'm delighted for you (and your pupils) OP!

LaurieFairyCake · 06/02/2021 16:41

EVERYONE offered should take it

Or they will be binned 🤷‍♀️

This is DOING YOUR BIT

grey12 · 06/02/2021 16:42

Definitely do not feel guilty!! We'll be sending hordes of children into school in a few weeks. I really wish they would vaccinate all the teachers

Turnedouttoes · 06/02/2021 16:43

Don’t feel guilty at all.
I am however judging my friend who is late 20s, works from home and got called mistakenly this week. Apparently it’ll be useful as she plans to visit family in America this summer. The same family she’s already traveled to see twice during the pandemic Hmm

Dentistlakes · 06/02/2021 16:43

Each person vaccinated is a step closer to getting back to some kind of normality. I would much rather someone had the vaccination than it be thrown away. I’m very surprised they have had so many people not turn up. I hope they had valid reasons.

Mumski45 · 06/02/2021 16:44

You are doing someone a favour@PatsyKen as now someone else can take your place in line and everyone moves up the queue. If you didn't take it then it would go in the bin or someone else in your position would have got it so I don't see this a queue jumping at all.
I really don't understand anyone getting upset about this.

Coffeecreativity · 06/02/2021 16:44

Don't be daft. This way is better than keeping elderly out in the cold and then running out of vaccine and sending them home.

Spring2021 · 06/02/2021 16:51

Good for you OP, glad they didn’t go to waste.

I am CEV mid 50’s (live 5 minutes drive away from my GP) and I still haven’t even got an appointment for my vaccine yet nor has my 79 year old mum (lives 10 minutes away from her GP’s).

Feel a bit worried if this is the plan they may run out before they get to my mum and me. If teachers and whoever else are being given the nod on the sly.

Cattitudes · 06/02/2021 16:53

You haven't deprived any one else of the vaccine and it means when it would have been your time, the next person on the list will get it instead. Plus if you are exposed you might pass it on to 30 other families, some of whom could be really ill.

BaronessVonCake · 06/02/2021 16:56

The vaccine has to be used that day so better it goes in an arm than in the bin I say!

And great if it's going to teachers who are in regular contacts with lots of kids!

Watsername · 06/02/2021 16:58

I would jump at the chance! Definitely better to take the jab than let it be thrown away - plus I think everyone working in a school should have it sooner rather than later. Please don’t feel guilty x

dailydose · 06/02/2021 17:00

Fantastic. I'm delighted for you. I'm a vaccinator. We had one dose left the other night and gave it to the security guard. That's exactly what we need to be doing to get out of this mess.
