This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

I really doesn't bother me if people clap or not. It's a personal choice. Will I bother? Depends if i feel like it or not

InterfectoremVulpes · 02/02/2021 21:56

Would people really sink that low?

You really need to ask?

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 02/02/2021 21:57

@Sparklingbrook

Probably best to give GMB/Lorraine/This Morning/Loose Women a swerve tomorrow. It will be relentless.
😂😂😂😂

@Ilovemypantry

Sad and shameful that so many people on here have zero respect for a war veteran of this country who raised an incredible amount of money for our NHS. Shame on you.
Who hasn't shown respect? Not wanting to take part in yet another ridiculous clapathon isn't disrespectful.

Solid advice, for every day of the year.
Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 02/02/2021 21:58

Would people really sink that low?

Yep.
I think the, flags & T-shirts are being printed faster than I can type this...

tatutata · 02/02/2021 21:58

@hansgrueber why is that a philosophy? It's utter bullshit to be devastated about someone fortunate enough to live a full life, to a great age, and to die. Is it really so hard to understand that is what I'm saying? Sherlock yourself.

HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 21:59

And so the shaming begins....

Many of us have respect. But we are tired, cold, fed up of covid. You do you.

slashlover · 02/02/2021 21:59

Did you raise 35 million pounds for the NHS this year? Say no more...

Lots of people did things to raise money for charity, Captain Tom was just happened to be the one who went viral.

Would people really sink that low?

As horrible as it is, I doubt Captain Tom was the one who wanted a gin named after him or a number one record.

NorbertMeubles · 02/02/2021 21:59

I'm not in mourning so it's 'a nation in mourning minus one'.

Livelovebehappy · 02/02/2021 21:59

Great human being who did a wonderful thing, but people are suggesting a state funeral, a statue in Trafalgar Square, a national holiday - just bonkers stuff. I think something nice, and low profile, would be something like a medal in his name given to an outstanding member of NHS once a year.

MrsMcGarry · 02/02/2021 22:00

I’ll save my mourning for the 14 people dead of Covid in Barbados since Xmas. Prior to loads of British tourists going there for Xmas there were practically no cases.

HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 22:00

@WalrusWife

Ilovemypantry - people have the right to think and feel whatever they want, despite what you think.
I will clap in agreement with this message!
Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2021 22:00

Yes that's a good point actually @Doomsdayiscoming but I feel tomorrow will be particularly bad- one long gush fest and leading the charge will be Piers Morgan probably.

I will be at work thankfully.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 02/02/2021 22:00

He boosted a nation's morale at a time when it desperately needed boosting. He tried to do good, bring positivity out of a dreadful situation, and I've no doubt he was a decent man.

He was also recognised for his act of altruism, lauded in the press, respected and valued by the public, and knighted for his efforts. All while he was alive and still able to appreciate the sentiment. As of today, he's not. What earthly good will a round of applause do him now? He won't know.

I agree with the point made by a PP about charity fundraising plugging the gap left in a public service which should have been adequately funded in the first place. Given the law of unintended consequences I hope this hasn't set a precedent.

The points being made about his holiday are unbelievably petty. Good decision: it was his last, as it turned out. And at his age that's always a factor to take into consideration. I say good for him.

Respect to him, he became a face of hope in a dark time and did something good for other people. The 'forced clapping' thing though is far too reminiscent of dictatorships for my liking. There's enough of that sort of thing stealing into society right now, without voluntarily adding to it. I didn't do the 'mandatory' neighbourhood demonstration for the NHS, and won't be doing so now.

XenoBitch · 02/02/2021 22:01

@User133847

I agree. Also, the idea of a statue is ridiculous. He seemed like a nice man and he did some good things during his last year of life, but the amount of screen time his death is receiving you'd think he was royalty.

I seen it mentioned for a hospital named in his honour which might be better than a statue.

A pioneer of surgery has a little ward named after him where I hail from. Having family good at PR and relying on the good of the nation to donate money and then have a hospital named after you... seems a bit much.
WalrusWife · 02/02/2021 22:01

Ilovemypantry - who is being disrespectful? What are you going to do about the perceived disrespect?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 02/02/2021 22:03

'Royalty' are not all that. The whole family combined have probably given a sight less to this country than Tom Moore.

Nah

No shame here

I'm sure he was a lovely man, he raised a ton of money

No one has been disrespectful, btw, just not fawning, grief vampires

Yeah exactly. I’ll be tearing that statue down and throwing it in the Thames.
Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 22:03

@PurpleDaisies

I’m talking about the general comments made which show lack of respect.

Perhaps you could be more specific?

Have a look back at comments. One example from @DinasourDiana who said “I would have loved to go on a holiday this winter but didn’t. Say no more” That’s the sort of remark I’m talking about, not people saying they won’t be clapping.

This!
KnobblyWand · 02/02/2021 22:05

There are grown adults who are claiming on Facebook that they haven't been able to stop randomly bursting into tears today. One of my FB friends just commented on someone else's profile pic of him, "this just set me off again "

'Grief vampires' is right.

Excuse me? The last season of The Crown got me through Lockdown 2.

The daughter will be all over that. She loves her 15 minutes of fame.
