This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

@Ilovemypantry judging by your posts on other threads, you're a lockdown fan/member of the mask police/stickler for the rules.

How do you feel about Captain Tom's visit to Barbados before Christmas, with particular reference to what @MrsMcGarry said above? Or is it 'disrespectful' to ask?

Frodont · 02/02/2021 22:05

@Livelovebehappy

Great human being who did a wonderful thing, but people are suggesting a state funeral, a statue in Trafalgar Square, a national holiday - just bonkers stuff. I think something nice, and low profile, would be something like a medal in his name given to an outstanding member of NHS once a year.
I agree. No clapping here and no neighbours so noone will know.
HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 22:06

I mean, I have No real issue of people want to do another clap. I never minded them. What I did and do mind is the shaming of those of us who didn't do it for whatever reason.

I think shaming people for something like this is petty and I doubt Sir Tom would be into shaming people. Like most wonderful people he seemed pretty modest.

ViciousJackdaw · 02/02/2021 22:07

Fuckin' hell, you'd think the man was up in hevven wiv Lady Di an the angles the way people are going on.

Yes, he did a marvellous thing. The man was 100 though, it's hardly a premature death now, was it?

I won't be clapping. Who does it benefit? What purpose does it serve? Instead, I shall honour the NHS by treating at home where possible, making sure I do the daily exercises the doc gave me, keeping my weight at a healthy level and not voting Tory.

Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 22:07

@WalrusWife

Ilovemypantry - who is being disrespectful? What are you going to do about the perceived disrespect?
What am I going to do about the perceived disrespect? Nothing...what would you like me to do?
cantmakealifeofit · 02/02/2021 22:10

British Airways offering the Barbados trip was an absolute disgrace.

The country has huge issues with poverty outside the nicey nice tourist bits. And a not so great healthcare system. Of course Tom and his family weren’t the only ones to go there at that time but with all of the publicity they absolutely should have declined on principle. There was NO need for it. Tom was lucky enough to live with his daughter, son in law and grandkids and could have had a lovely warm family Christmas at home unlike many other elderly who spent it cold and alone. Just unnecessary. And as others have said, Barbadians have died since the Christmas holiday rush there.

But British Airways couldn’t resist that juicy publicity, could they?

TramaDollface · 02/02/2021 22:10

@moonpig23

The daughter will be all over that. She loves her 15 minutes of fame.
To be fair I’d be massively proud of my dad....if he was like this old man.

( as things stand he’s a narcissistic morose misanthropic old misogynistic twist who never thinks about anybody but himself)

Ahhhh
That’s better

Bytheriogrande · 02/02/2021 22:11

I've no doubt that he was a lovely man and he did a great thing in raising a lot of money for the NHS (which should just be properly funded but that's another thing altogether) but lots of people devote their entire lives to helping other people and noone bats an eyelash when they die.

It's sad for his family and friends but clapping? No.

What he achieved was amazing..especially as it was a lovely moment during a miserable time.
But had he not done that.. he would've just been another death that only his family and friends mourned. This whole facebook morning.. clapping whatever just seems odd!

HyggaeHugger · 02/02/2021 22:11

For, not do

Flatcokeisnojoke · 02/02/2021 22:13

Virtue signalling bandwagonism...

No thanks

Rosehip10 · 02/02/2021 22:15

Just no.

norwegianwoodpecker · 02/02/2021 22:16

Do something meaningful if you must. Clapping does nothing for anyone

Rosehip10 · 02/02/2021 22:16

"a nation in mourning"? Confused

I feel flattered that you took the time to look up all my other posts 😂.

My thoughts about him going to Barbados are that it was something he had always wanted to do. As a war veteran who laid his life on the line for his country, who raised an incredible amount of money for the NHS, who was 100 yrs old and most probably wouldn’t have another chance, you’d have to be a pretty mean and nasty person to deny him that.

MadameTuffington · 02/02/2021 22:17

Can we not just celebrate and thank this lovely old bloke amid the Corona bollocks for doing such a simple but effective gesture to raise funds for our health service that has been royally fucked over by successive governments.

Clap if you want and don’t clap if you don’t want.

Let’s just remember a sweet man who made an effort for other people :)

#RIPCaptainTom 🙏

Doomsdayiscoming · 02/02/2021 22:18

@Ilovemypantry

But let’s face it. If he hadn’t gone. No pneumonia. Covid jab. And we wouldn’t be arguing about a clap that may or may not happen.

stillonthattightrope · 02/02/2021 22:18

@Ilovemypantry do you not give a shit about the surge in cases in Barbados attributed to tourism?
Why does he get to put others at risk. We have all clearly been told to stay at home and that family didn't.
The rules and advice applies to everyone. It was selfish and irresponsible.

UndertheCedartree · 02/02/2021 22:18

I think lighting a candle is better.

I would just feel bad clapping publicly for one person when so many have died plus still suffering Covid/Long Covid. All people are important.

norwegianwoodpecker · 02/02/2021 22:19

But we already ARE a nation in mourning: how much more mournful can we bloody get.

Smartiepants79 · 02/02/2021 22:20

I live very locally. The village Facebook has a message on it from a family friend that says that family has essentially asked for people not to do this.
They’ve requested privacy and for the family to be allowed to grief in peace.

PrincessOfAllOurTarts · 02/02/2021 22:21

Call me weird but it was the 13-year-old-boy who died alone at the start of the pandemic that done me in.
Me too. Died alone and his family couldn't even have a funeral as they weren't allowed at the start.

Arobase · 02/02/2021 22:21

Did you raise 35 million pounds for the NHS this year? Say no more

To be fair, @Ilovemypantry, Captain Tom didn't raise £35 million for the NHS either. The money went to NHS charities - not the same thing at all.
