This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

Maybe they changed their minds, or maybe as said they were doorstepped by a pack of braying journalists and gave in

Both complete speculation.
Always the most pessimistic option is the first to jump on though.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/02/2021 19:38

I find it interesting that you don’t hear much about his other daughter.

Frodont · 03/02/2021 19:39

I'm sure the family weren't coerced into it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/02/2021 19:42

Of course it is, Quaagers; that's what the "maybe" was for, because because we simply can't know

And nobody's said it's the "only explanation" - in fact I offered an alternative in the very same post
Do at least try to stick with what was said, rather than instantly jumping to your own interpretation of it ...

NeonBella · 03/02/2021 19:42

I was in Tesco and suddenly I noticed that people had stopped and were clapping.
I had ear buds in so didn't realise straight away, awkward!

Anyway, I had no intention of clapping and I didn't during lockdown either.
I'm sure that the Cpt would prefer for the NHS to be properly funded rather than us all standing on our doorstops performing an empty gesture.

I really hope this trend for clapping dies out. It's pointless and slightly ridiculous that our prime minister is joining in with this virtue signalling rubbish.

I have seen a few people share a petition for a state funeral

Arobase · 03/02/2021 19:53

@FuzzyPuffling

My beloved late dad was also in India and Burma like Cpt Tom.

He never wore his medals, never used his rank title and would never wear a poppy either. He helped to repatriate people who has been POWs of the Japanese. He would have been mortified to have been called a war hero. Everyone's different, but I know who my personal hero is.

My father was very similar. By contrast, FIL, who was younger and never saw a shot fired in anger, was constantly going on about the war as if he was personally responsible for winning it.

Shock
slashlover · 03/02/2021 20:04

Then a couple of pictures of them doing so?
Just shows you can't believe everything you read on social media here by randomers, so you don't need to angry face any more.

Can you imagine the furore if they hadn't done it?

WalrusWife · 03/02/2021 21:08

I’m enjoying the Facebook posts “I was the only one to done the clap on my street Sad” type stuff, always with atrocious grammar. Grin

SquirmOfEels · 03/02/2021 21:09

There's a separate thread about the funerary petition

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4155451-NO-to-a-state-funeral-for-Captain-Sir-Tom-Moore-AIBU

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 03/02/2021 21:40

Surely even the most ardent Captain Tom fangirls can see that the huge cost of a state funeral at a time when millions have lost their livelihoods would be completely tone deaf and totally inappropriate? Wouldn't they think that Tom himself would prefer such a massive amount of money be spent on the NHS?

Not to mention the lunacy of a huge public event during a pandemic.

People really are ridiculous, aren't they.

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 22:04

Can you imagine the furore if they hadn't done it?

Sadly yes, as they can't bloody win - there'd be pages of bilge and bile whatever they wanted to do.

JaimeLeeCurtains · 03/02/2021 22:06

Didn't hear any clapping on my street.

Oblomov21 · 03/02/2021 22:21

Not keen. Don't want to be seen as disrespectful though.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 03/02/2021 23:04

I will raise a glass or bottle for him at the weekend. But I'm all clapped out. Can't find it in me anymore.

Twixmasdilema · 03/02/2021 23:48

Our local Facebook group was full of "well done xxx Road" or " shame on you xxx Road" type.posts. Baffling!. No clapping in our street - thank god!

FelineUK · 04/02/2021 00:04

Clapping has become a 'thing' now.. it's hear to stay, unfortunately. Yet it does nothing practical or useful. Far better to raise money, or have a hospital ward, or something like this as a lasting legacy to Sir Tom's name and efforts.

Jump off a cliff. Oh yes! When, what time?! Don't forget to clap like a seal on the way down.

Quaagars · 04/02/2021 00:06

Hmm Biscuit

Yes, that would be much more suitable. This clapping is just crass and self-serving, like everything Johnson does.

Arobase · 04/02/2021 00:20

No-one in our street, and we all clapped the NHS dutifully during the first lockdown.

Quaagars · 04/02/2021 00:26

or " shame on you xxx Road" type.posts. Baffling

Really? If they did shaming road type posts then yes, they do need to give their heads a wobble.
Doesn't mean anyone's wrong to want to do it though, or a sheep or whatever if they do like is insinuated on the threads.

Bluesheep8 · 04/02/2021 06:35

We already do fund the NHS through NI and taxation

It's not sufficiently funded or fit for purpose though is it? I wonder if all those clapping would agree to an increase in the NI contribution. That would have more effect than clapping.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 04/02/2021 07:23

Yep saw an fb post.

Word for word.....

O"nly me an r *** clapped on our street today an a neighba cross road or captain tom tonight. absolutely disgustin."

lollipoprainbow · 04/02/2021 07:26

I watched the clapping on the news at 6 and found it cringeworthy, virtue signalling nonsense ! The army looked like robots with their clapping, I see piers has been blocking people on Twitter who didn't clap !!!!
