Lockdown what lockdown????

novaparty12 · 02/02/2021 13:40

I work in a school and staff have been working on a rota system. However from yesterday all staff are now back in as we have 75% of the children in. So many workplaces have told staff they don't want their staff working from home as productivity levels are low because they are too busy homeschooling their children, so children need to go to school so parents can work on site in their workplace, Both sets of our neighbours now back at work in their offices full time as company can not afford all the technology and technical support to keep them at home. Traffic near us at school time especially is still horrendous, coffee shops although only offering take aways are attracting huge crowds of people, shops such as wickes, home bargains etc are rammed. With this new strain spreading surely lockdown should be stricter???

I agree, it’s really poor. The fear factor just seems to have gone plus the economic realities kicking in for business. It’s worrying.

Bixs · 02/02/2021 13:42

Yawn

Pipandmum · 02/02/2021 13:45

Not the picture here, though there is definitely a fair amount if cars out there but I don't know where they are all going. Fewer kids at school than last spring lockdown. Supermarkets seem quieter too and thank goodness no stock issues this time round.

HereComesATractor · 02/02/2021 13:45

Feels pretty locked down to me. Want to swap?

User7458 · 02/02/2021 13:47

I wouldn't have a clue how many people are in Wickes and Home Bargains, you must have been there OP to know they are rammed

lucywho123 · 02/02/2021 13:48

Its locked down where I am and only 20% of children are in at the local primary school. Maybe I need to move to these 'what lockdown' places as nothing is open where I am and I havent seen friends or family in months so feel like im missing out if everyone else is free Confused

CeeJay81 · 02/02/2021 13:50

I do wonder if that's why the cases have come down a lot on Wales compared to some area in England. They seem to be stricter with the key worker provision in a lot of the local authorities here. There are 5 kids in my daughter's class out of 25-30.

novaparty12 · 02/02/2021 13:51

Good point but I had to get craft supplies for my class at school as more children than normal at short notice this week so no time to order. Car park was almost full at 5pm last night!!

The government knows they can't keep lockdown in place much longer - the increasingly sceptical plebs won't do it, they don't have the police numbers to enforce it (much as they would bluff otherwise), and the economy won't be able to handle it. They're throwing news of "new variants" at us to keep the fear going as the days start getting longer.

I'm quite sure that when it suits Saint Boris and his merry men, they're going to change the narrative like the flick of a switch: all talk of variants will be hushed up, and it will be "Looooooooooooook!!!!! The vaccine is working!!!!!! It's now your civic duty to go out and spend!!!!!"

Bootskates · 02/02/2021 13:55

Because it's not feasible to fully lock down indefinitely...

If it was a shorter sharper lockdown then maybe but people have to work and I don't begrudge any child a school place or any adult the opportunity to earn a living

IcedPurple · 02/02/2021 13:58

How busy are the pubs, bars and restaurants in your area OP?

Lots of people at the hairdressers and nail salons?

Gyms, swimming pools busy?

How about cinemas and theatres?

All heaving with flouting flouters too?

Delatron · 02/02/2021 13:59

They need to get stricter on the key worker provision. It’s unfair on the about 30% of children who aren’t in and with that amount of kids in it can be doing nothing to stop the spread. Either do it properly or don’t bother. The economic and mental health consequences are too great to do some kind of half hearted lockdown.

HereComesATractor · 02/02/2021 14:00

Cases are coming down nearly everywhere, so why do more?

Coriandersucks · 02/02/2021 14:00

It’s ok, op had a good reason to be at home bargains everyone else was there for shits and giggles.

EatingAllTheCookies · 02/02/2021 14:01

I agree op. It rakes the same amount of time doing pre school drop off with the traffic as it normally is.
I drive past a wickes and always a busy car park.
I went to b and m today to get sugar and coffee etc for dhs works and it's the closest shop. And it was like Xmas.
But I was in there too contribuiting to that
Same with traffic.

My friend is a teacher, her school have 75 percent in too.

I only know of 3 friends wfh. Everyone else in the office or can't wfh.

But I belive the fear factor has gone. I know I don't fear for it or worry when I go out.
And I'm sure many others don't either

Delatron · 02/02/2021 14:01

I agree they are building up the fear with these many mutations (which is what viruses do) as they’ve lost the public buy in now .

Guy on BBC radio this morning was very ‘it’s VERY worrying and these mutations MAY be more deadly’. There’s no evidence to say they are so he shouldn’t be allowed on the radio as an ‘expert’ saying that.

Delatron · 02/02/2021 14:02

If schools are 75% open anyway then just open them fully. I can’t see how much difference that would make.

islockdownoveryet · 02/02/2021 14:07

But that’s the thing isn’t it it’s all very well saying it needs to be stricter but if employers are insisting they are back in the office the kids have to go to school. And regards to takeaways and traffic there will be because staff take breaks and they have to commute to work .
Unless the government does something about that then people have no say about going to the office .
Home bargains wickes etc we’ll have more than a month of lockdown people need things and yes d&y is something that people want to do to fill the days .
I went and got paint today so shoot me , there was nobody in the shop I paid in the self service so no contact .

CookPassBabtridge · 02/02/2021 14:08

My little one is in nursery at school so I can see how many kids are in, it's about half. At first I was like "what's the point?" but then half in is half the spread, half the pressure on the nhs 🤷🏻‍♀️

OliveTree75 · 02/02/2021 14:12

Completely agree. My DS hates the live zoom meetings with his teacher where most of his class are waving in the background!

Our school have today sent out a letter stating they need proof of key worker status by the end of the week because they have to many in school and it is now impacting on teachers ability to teach live lessons. So once again those at home are loosing out plus maybe the critical workers who really do need a place.

ohnothisagain · 02/02/2021 14:19

My kid’s school has 12 out of 400 kids attending....

MrsFrisbyMouse · 02/02/2021 14:22

And yet numbers of positive cases are falling.

Even if schools are 'busy' and people are going to work, the overall number of social interactions are dramatically reduced as we can't go anywhere for leisure or meet anyone socially. Net result is infections still fall.

Delatron · 02/02/2021 14:24

I don’t think it’s as linear as that though? 50% in 50% less spread. Not necessarily.
Once you get to 75% it really can’t make much difference. We’re not protecting the teachers or stopping community spread are we?

Yes @OliveTree75 it’s hard enough them struggling at home with worksheets. Then they do the live Zoom call and see all their mates in school. They are getting the teaching, the socialising, the playing with friends.
