How long do you think the public majority (IRL) will put up with this for?

How long do you think public opinion and action will continue to support not seeing friends and family?
I’m asking based on your real life experiences (not mumsnet views)
I’m not after ‘I’m giving up my life for as long as it takes’ views here, or ‘I’m happy watching tv and hugging my yoga mat for years.
I’m asking for realistic views of 2021 and public opinion as the year goes on.

Spring. You only have to see the protests around Europe to see that compliance is breaking down...

I want to see a clear roadmap out of this and opinions that go beyond the narrow circle of lockdown-obsessed SAGE and a couple of scared ministers.

Once the vaccine roll out has covered the most vulnerable/elderly, things need to open again.

'As long as it takes' is not a realistic option. Will you stay indoors for the rest of your life? I don't think so.

Plus with that approach we would soon have no jobs, businesses and money for the NHS/benefits left. At some point we will have to accept a level of risk/deaths.

daisypond · 31/01/2021 17:41

Everyone I know is gritting their teeth and getting on with it. That’s my real-life experience.

HexWitch · 31/01/2021 17:42

I really hope people start revolting, quite frankly. I see how this is affecting young families, how they're struggling with the closure of their businesses and having their incomes complete removed for an indefinite amount of time. They've been thrown under the bus and it's time they stood up to the government and demanded an end to this.

lunalucie · 31/01/2021 17:42

Depends where you live. I live in one of the poorest parts of Wales and work in one of the most affluent parts and lockdown is very different in both places. You wouldn't know lockdown is happening where I live because people are carrying on as normal but where I work it's so quiet and people seem to be complying more.

AlexaShutUp · 31/01/2021 17:42

I don't understand what as long as it takes means.

For me, it means until the scientists no longer advise that it is necessary. I doubt that will be zero covid, but it will need to be significantly more under control than it is right now.

Personally, I'd rather that we have a longer lockdown now to get things properly under control than keep opening up and then locking down again.

Dustyspringfield10 · 31/01/2021 17:44

I see my family and have done all the way through. It's fucking ridiculous to expect people to go at least a year without.

Dustyspringfield10 · 31/01/2021 17:45

People saying "It's just one year so we can have many more years together." Well a lot of people don't have "many years left".

DinosaurDiana · 31/01/2021 17:46

My NDN’s two kids come and go as they please yet I can’t drive 20 minutes to have a walk on the beach.
TBH I’m getting very fed up of it, I could cry today.

@Dustyspringfield10, no, it's fucking ridiculous that some people think the rules don't apply to them.

AnxiousAlpaca · 31/01/2021 17:48

I think by and large people will follow the rules but I do think more and more will start to break rules when it comes to seeing family, going in friends houses etc...

Dustyspringfield10 · 31/01/2021 17:49

" the rules" are in large Draconian and inhumane. People have applied common sense and will not be kept from their families for over a year, it's disgusting to expect people to do so.

luckylavender · 31/01/2021 17:49

This again. It's not a choice anyone of us would make but we have no real choice in the matter.

BuenoN0ches · 31/01/2021 17:50

It won't last long. Peoples mental health is running thin.

luckylavender · 31/01/2021 17:52

@Dustyspringfield10 - you think people are doing this to you on purpose?

Meredithgrey1 · 31/01/2021 17:52

@luckylavender

We don’t have a choice to go to a restaurant obviously, but when it comes to seeing family, people have as much choice as they do when it comes to something like speeding. Some people will always do it, and generally speaking, a lot will probably get away with it.
AnyFucker · 31/01/2021 17:52

In my town today there are police roadblocks.

Cars with more than 2 people in getting stopped.

Others being asked what is the nature of their business.

Scary times

IcedPurple · 31/01/2021 17:53

If you'd told me 10 months ago that people would still be tolerating not being able to see loved ones, the destruction of their businesses, the collapse of their income, the interruption to their children's education and basically the loss of all the things which make life enjoyable for most of us, I'd have said 'No way!'

Yet, here we are.

I'm not sure when or if we'll reach a tipping point. To me it's utterly depressing that we've got vaccines which are being administered at amazing speed, yet we're still being told there's no end in sight. Telling people to 'hang on in there' is getting a bit old. Perhaps the 1st anniversary of lockdown will have a psychological impact, though perhaps not. Like I say, I really am surprised at how people have gone along with all this without any real dissent.

AlexaShutUp · 31/01/2021 17:54

I think it's pretty disgusting that people are willing to put their family members at risk in the midst of a pandemic. And others, too.

Fuckinlonely · 31/01/2021 17:54
@Dustyspringfield10 - you think people are doing this to you on purpose?
Yep. Its not about the virus or health. Or lockdown lovers wouldn't have gained so much weight this year. It's about feeling superior and enjoying the bullying aspect for most of them. Imo.

Dustyspringfield10 · 31/01/2021 17:54

If they asked me what the nature of my business was, I would tell them to mind their own.

IcedPurple · 31/01/2021 17:55

For me, it means until the scientists no longer advise that it is necessary.

Who are 'the scientists' though?

You can find a 'scientist' to support just about any pont of view. Plus, scientists tend to have a very narrow viewpoint and often don't take into account real life factors beyond their area of expertise.

luckylavender · 31/01/2021 17:56

@Meredithgrey1 - that's not quite true. Same town, next village, 50 miles, 200 miles, different U.K. country, Europe, Australia. All very different. And the longer people prioritise their own uniqueness, the harder it gets for everyone.

Dustyspringfield10 · 31/01/2021 17:56

Yeah, disgusting that my family want to take a small risk and see me after a year, even if I have a test and keep a distance. Animals, aren't we. Very strange thinking on here

I know.

I don't neccessarily disagree with the restrictions, but I find this loss of our basic civic liberties disturbing. How long can it go on?

luckylavender · 31/01/2021 17:58

@Dustyspringfield10 - then you'd get fined. And you'd deserve it.
