Re AZ vaccine. Maybe I'm thick. Could someone explain why it's the UKs fault?

Me and my neighbour both want a certain item from Amazon. I buy 2 because I want and need 2. A few weeks later my neighbour buys one.

Mine arrives. My neighbour gets an email from Amazon saying their package is delayed. My neighbour comes to me, banging on my door, yelling at me that Amazon haven't delivered and demanding that I give her mine or at least 1 of mine. I say no, I ordered them, I'm using them. She needs to take it up with Amazon. My neighbour screams at me that I'm a cunt and goes round the entire village yelling about what a twat I am.

The UK media are spinning this in to an EU vs UK thing.... but it isn’t.

The EU have dragged the UK into its contract dispute with AZ, it has nothing to do with us. It's not clear if you thought the UK media had an obligation to play down the aggresive behaviour of the EU.

The contract was made public yesterday. Unfortunately they couldn't even get that right and some commercially sensitive parts of the contract were not redacted as they should have been so we know rather more than we were supposed. The EU have also demanded that the UK publish it's contract with AZ, again involving us in a dispute we have nothing to do with.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 30/01/2021 14:04

@Wherediditgo

It is not a good analogy OP.

The situation between AZ & EU is much more complex than that. They have a contract, we have no idea what is in that contract because it is confidential. The EU are stating that AZ literally named the UK as a prime manufacturing location within the contract.

Who knows - I haven’t seen the contract and neither have you. And the EU has citizens it would like to keep from dying too. The UK media are spinning this in to an EU vs UK thing.... but it isn’t.

Not only was the contract released yesterday, it was also incorrectly formatted so the redacted information was easily readable.

Ironically, this has made the EU in breach of contract, as there was a very clear clause which stated sensitive data within the contact was not to be shared with third parties, and they shared with the whole world!
AZ would now be well within their legal rights to pull the plug on the whole thing.

I mean, they won’t, but they could.

yeOldeTrout · 30/01/2021 14:12

Is this another one of those threads, sole purpose of it is to give people an excuse to rant? And even better for some, to spout fury & hate?

Why is that enjoyable? I will never understand some especially British??! people.

Thislittlefinger123 · 30/01/2021 14:29

I voted remain, but the EU have behaved really badly with their reaction to this, it's very embarrassing for them. They're pissed off that they were slow off the mark, and it's particularly painful that it's us that have done a better job Grin The government have been a total shitshow in their handling of the pandemic, but the vaccine rollout has been handled really well. If the situation were reversed I very much doubt they'd be sharing their vaccine order with us.

Thislittlefinger123 · 30/01/2021 14:32

yeOldeTrout I don't see any ranting, just people quite rightly pointing out how badly the EU are handling this situation. I'm not furious or hateful Hmm And not sure what you're on about with your "especially British" comment.

Nope. I started it in order to get other people's opinions on the subject and improve my understanding of it. No frothing required. I quite like discussing important events and reading/hearing views from people with a better understanding than me. I wonder when discussion became frothing... Even heated debate, which this isn't, isn't frothing. It's people exchanging opinions on a serious subject. 🤷‍♀️

@PicsInRed

Very good OP Grin

Additionally, the neighbour is also your very recent and difficult ex husband for some reason you can't move further away... the divorce was vicious and the kids (little North Ire and her older brother Eire) are caught up in his revenge plots. He's very much of the mindset that his money and assets are his post divorce, but shamelessly demands you share your stuff with him when it suits him.

Mutual friends are desperate to remain "neutral" (that means taking his side) but starting to 🤔 😲 at exh's carrying on and wondering whether you might have had good reason to leave after all.

😉

Love this!

It's a really good thread. People using great analogies to explain a complex situation to those asking.

In fact it's one of the nicer threads - I e not seen any "let me introduce you to godly" or "I can't believe to have to ask" etc.

Furries · 30/01/2021 15:01

@LenaBlack

16Wherediditgo The contract is in the public domain since yesterday.. ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_21_302 it's not UK media at all actually..EU have shown themselves to be bullies all on their own.. EUs conduct has been shocking on this
And some idiot at the EU couldn’t even get it right re posting the contract. They forgot to redact the bookmarks tab, so for a brief period the whole bloody thing was available for everyone to see.

If I was AZ I’d be absolutely fuming by now.

LimitIsUp · 30/01/2021 15:25

The German press and German politicians are now rounding on Ursula von Leyen for misnagement in vaccine procurement, approval and roll out. Its sounding less anti-UK and more balanced. Also Michel Barnier is urging calm and cooperation

Sorry, don't know how to translate that to Amazon analogies!

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 15:30

@doomsdayiscoming - posts are the funniest though - an EU zealot - the drama of the name and the drama of "starves"

"You’ve bought two loaves of bread. Your neighbour is starving. You feed your second loaf to the birds, whilst your neighbour starves."

No, they stay in a stricter lockdown longer because they didn't order in time and are still not ordering Novovax in time as they are still negotiating - do they not ever learn lessons? the arrogance of the EU.

I love the strawberries analogy it is perfect - this is a live product not a table and chairs. EU are now putting effort into repurposing the redundant (failed) Sanofi vaccine plant and it takes several months - have to put backwork to dig themselves out of their stony bit of allotment they chose to grow their strawberries on.

No, they're shouting at the gardeners who've grown the pretty crop on the next allotment. We've all met people like this - would you put those people in charge of anything, let alone ordering the important strawberry seeds.

Orangeblossom1977 · 30/01/2021 15:40

Haven't Germany made their own vaccine orders? Maybe they can share some of that.

Furries · 30/01/2021 15:47

Am pretty sure that they don’t get their order until the EU order has been fulfilled.
Orangeblossom1977 · 30/01/2021 15:52

I thought they had made a separate order/s?

"When it comes to EU vaccine solidarity, Germany is looking to have its cake and eat it, too.

While Berlin championed the bloc's joint purchasing of coronavirus vaccines while holding the European Union's rotating presidency in the second half of 2020, it simultaneously made additional agreements with vaccine producers — including BioNTech/Pfizer and CureVac — for extra doses. And it's now purchasing additional vaccines other EU countries didn't want."

www.politico.eu/article/germany-buys-extra-coronavirus-vaccine-doses-from-eu-countries/

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 15:56

EU have said Germans can have their Pfizer (good of them) as long as it's after the EU has been given all their order.... hmmmm sounds familiar to the UK AZ deal doesn't it, I wonder why they struggle to understand it.

"Health Minister Jens Spahn has said national deals were possible with the same vaccine makers once the EU has concluded its own contract and as long as supplies to EU countries were not disrupted."

www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-eu-pfizer/eu-seeks-more-doses-of-pfizer-vaccine-as-germany-outlines-earlier-deal-idINKBN29916N

Orangeblossom1977 · 30/01/2021 15:56

"Germany, a country of 83 million people, said it's getting 94 million doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, 64 million from the EU and 30 million from a separate bilateral deal. On top of that, Berlin will buy doses that other countries don't buy, securing 50 million of 160 million Moderna doses — far more than its pro-rata allocation."

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 15:58

should be noted German deal pre-dates the EU one by a couple of months also, but been told that despite the German contract with Pfizer the EU have final say - why would anyone do business with this entity after this - just moves rules around to suit them, when it suits them.

The German population may have something to say on this hopefully.

Also the other EU nations who were told not to ahead and make a separate order - Germans ignored that instruction obviously and did a separate 30m order.

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 16:06

Moderna have yesterday revised their delivery order to EU for February which is why they're going for a perceived easy target of UK/AZ.

25% down on what they're expecting in Feb to the EU from Moderna.

Are they threatening Moderna? No, bullies always choose victims they think are in a weaker position - maybe they've misjudged the outcome.

www.ft.com/content/bb514eed-3be8-411a-b1c4-255dc569bae5

"Vaccine manufacturer Moderna has told Italy and France it will deliver fewer doses than expected in February, in another blow to struggling coronavirus vaccination plans in the EU."

Moderna have yesterday revised their delivery order to EU for February
Are they threatening Moderna? No

Of course nobody is happy about that, but the difference is that Moderna are at least trying to make up for it and say they will deliver more in March, thus meeting their targets for the first quarter.

www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy-vaccine/moderna-covid-vaccines-delayed-in-europe-and-elsewhere-adding-to-shortfalls-idUSKBN29Y1CD
"Moderna confirms that, as it scales manufacturing, it is on track to supply the next three months of deliveries and meet its Q1 and subsequent contractual commitments."

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 17:20

AZ were in discussions on what they can make up too..... but the EU threw a tantrum saying we don't believe you...you're hiding them.

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 17:24

AZ trying to explain to EU that 3 months ahead to iron out glitches with UK and EU needed to start with their own ironing out of glitches....
EU publicly announcing they don't believe AZ - outrageous behaviour - who would want to deal with them? Do read the article

www.euractiv.com/section/health-consumers/news/brussels-doesnt-buy-astrazenecas-assurances-it-doesnt-sell-eu-doses-to-other-countries/

"The target is to deliver 17 million doses by February.”

Europe is on track to receive 17% of AstraZeneca’s global production in February “for a population that is 5% of the world population”, he noted.

@17thEarlOfOxford

Please consider using alternative online shopping services. Amazon pays very little UK tax and is often more expensive and lower quality than alternatives.
Please consider not attempting to pass other people's work off as your own.

I see you, Edward.
