And it's effective against the new UK variant!

And it will really wind the EU up!!!

Novavax has passed its stage three trial, now hopefully the MHRA will approve it!!! Grin Grin Grin

OP posts:
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/01/2021 10:27

I dare say one reason for the EU signing up so relatively late for both the AZ vaccine and the Novovax, is because they were expecting to rely to a considerable extent on the French Sanofi vaccine, which has unfortunately failed. Much to the chagrin of Macron and France in general.
That’s IMO adding to the general pissed-off-ness factor. Being within the EU club was supposed to guarantee advantages all round.

ThePlantsitter · 29/01/2021 10:29

Celebrate the new vaccine by all means but shut the fuck up with the war-talk. Beyond tasteless.

ImsorryWilson · 29/01/2021 10:29

Thank you JKR.

I think the OP needs be edited.

I totally share the "oh thank fuck it's not us and it's not a Brexit fuckup" feeling. but this crosses a line.

" Celebrate the new vaccine by all means but shut the fuck up with the war-talk. Beyond tasteless."

this

Hopeisnotastrategy · 29/01/2021 10:32

@IheartJKR thank you! 😊

Fembot123 · 29/01/2021 10:33

@feelingverylazytoday

It will really wind the EU up Really? Bit of a childish reaction. People in the EU deserve to be protected against this horrible virus as much as British people do. It's not a competition.
I agree with this, this is how conflicts start.
Fembot123 · 29/01/2021 10:33

Meaning I agree with @feelingverylazytoday

itsgettingweird · 29/01/2021 10:34

And it'll really wind the EU up

No idea why but that made me laugh! I was always a remainer but I'm beginning to see what my leave friends meant by EU thinking they were better and could do things better.

For once our government have got something spot on and our NHS and Army have this vaccine roll out spot on.

I had my first dose this morning. I wasn't the only one there with tears in my eyes.

DamnUserName21 · 29/01/2021 10:34

@ImsorryWilson

"Nobody here has stated that they take pleasure in anyone’s misfortune."

the OP says that the fact the latest vaccine is being manufactured here: "will really wind the EU up!"

I'd translate that to mean that the EU govt might be annoyed by it.

Not that the OP is gleeful about the lower vaccination rates and increased deaths.

It's interesting though--the UK has some of the highest infection and death rates in Europe but Brussel's still wanted AZ to divert vaccine supplies away from the UK. Food for thought.

Jenasaurus · 29/01/2021 10:35

So if they discover that the AZ vaccine isnt effective against the South African Variant, does that mean those that have had it will need the Noravax one as well?

Fredshred · 29/01/2021 10:35

@ImsorryWilson

"Reporting the thread was unnecessary."

I disagree. This is a cock up that is killing people. There are empty vaccination centres.

Imagine if it was the reverse and there were French people delighting in how "would up" we were.

it's revolting.

I completely agree. Totally distasteful thread. Are we really reduced to jeering about loss of human life because of headlines and soundbites we read in papers.
beautifulstranger101 · 29/01/2021 10:37

Really? Bit of a childish reaction. People in the EU deserve to be protected against this horrible virus as much as British people do. It's not a competition

Its not the fault of the UK people that the EU have messed up the vaccine rollout spectacularly is it? Thats on them, not us, and they cant just demand we give them what we have already paid for to compensate. How the fck is that fair on any level?

The fact is- the EU are royally pissed off that they couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery and they told us we were stupid to leave (which in some ways I still think we were). So, the fact we have vaccinated way more people than them has very obviously made them livid. They are acting like a parent who never wanted their child to leave home and are now furious that they are making a success of their life.

itsgettingweird · 29/01/2021 10:38

I have no sympathy for EU. It's not about gloating. They waited 3 months and tried to negotiate a lower price on a non for profit vaccine.

They thought they could and would do better.

There is of course valid arguments about the global need and vaccinating the whole globe to prevent it. But uk were also willing to use aid budget to provide vaccines to developing countries.

I've looked and can't find EU agreeing to do the same? They just wanted cheaper shots for themselves.

IheartJKR · 29/01/2021 10:38

@DamnUserName21 absolutely.

I’ve lived mostly in various European cities in the last 20 years and still have a young dd in one who’ve I’ve not seen in 18 months now Sad

I love Europe and our European families but as a governing body the European Union is very divisive and horrifyingly unaccountable.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 29/01/2021 10:39

@Popcornriver

The whole thing also feels much worse somehow knowing the vaccines produced here will be going to the UK elderly whereas Germany announced the AZ won't be used on the over 65s. I don't know if the EU plans to follow but taking vaccines from the elderly in one nation and giving it to a younger population would be awful.
An excellent point.
zafferana · 29/01/2021 10:40

Yup - agree with every word you've written @TheGoldenCircle

The UK has (finally!) done something right in this wretched pandemic. The govt committed to vaccines early on, signed contracts and put its money where it's mouth is. They supported vaccine development by homegrown companies while also hedging their bets by investing in other promising-looking offerings overseas, like Pfizer. Then they focused on getting them approved quickly so our roll-out could get going really fast - and look how it's paid off!

Bloody Labour would've had us throwing in our lot with the EU for ordering vaccines and thank god we didn't do that, because the lumbering behemoth in Brussels all arguing amongst themselves have done what nothing else so far had, which is to make even the most ardent remainer think 'Thank fuck we're no longer part of that!'

And as for Nicola Sturgeon - words fail me - but no doubt her arse-licking to the EU is preparing the way for a putatively independent Scotland to go with begging bowl in hand to the EU when/if she gets what she wants. Well, I wish her and Scotland well, because they'll never survive without some other mug picking up the tab for Socialist Scotland if they wave a tartan middle finger to Westminster. The numbers don't add up for independence, as presumably she well knows, so those euros will come in handy.

But anyway, I'm all for the UK donating vaccines that it over-ordered to the developing world AFTER all UK adults have been vaccinated, but the EU has more than enough money to take care of itself.

Oblomov20 · 29/01/2021 10:40

I didn't know about Novavax, so that's good.

beautifulstranger101 · 29/01/2021 10:42

@zafferana

Superbly expressed.

Sums up this situation perfectly.

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 10:42

Zafferana as someone who voted remain your post sums up how I feel. On all points

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 29/01/2021 10:45

@zafferana I also voted remain and I agree with every single point youve raised.

Spot on.

Thousands of you are going to die and you can't have the cure! Tee hee!!

Pathetic.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 29/01/2021 10:47

@IheartJKR

The deliberate misrepresentation of individuals statements on this thread is very frustrating.

Nobody here has stated that they take pleasure in anyone’s misfortune.

Several people have expressed their displeasure at the conduct of EUnion as many other European citizens have.

This is right.

For the record I am married to an EU citizen and my DC are 50% EU citizens.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2021 10:48

@Jenasaurus

So if they discover that the AZ vaccine isnt effective against the South African Variant, does that mean those that have had it will need the Noravax one as well?
Its an interesting question. One which has problems. We don't know how different vaccines work together. It is something which will probably need testing as there are no guarantees here.

We just do not know.

We do know that coronaviruses are similar to flu viruses and we suspect immunity (and thus effectiveness of any vaccine) fades with time. So there is already the belief we will probably need top up vaccines over time or new variant vaccines like we do with flu.

We may have to wait some time to have a different vaccine as you may react badly if you have two different vaccinations particularly too close together. Or - the worst case scenario - may be problematic for some groups to have a second vaccine at all.

We are just too close to the start of the pandemic and not enough time has passed to definitively have the answer to this question.

And may I commend you on the sentence "wave a tartan middle finger" made me giggle.

Personally I ah e no feelings either way on independence - they need to do what they feel right with regards EU. But I totally agree NS comments certainly seem to be about political play.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 29/01/2021 10:50

Well the EU doesnt seem to give a shit about this do they? otherwise they would have sorted this mess out months ago. Maybe direct your fury at them considering that THEY are the ones responsible for the delay, they should have acted sooner to ensure the quick rollout of vaccines. But no, its got nothing to do with them has it?- instead its a random person on a message board.

Pathetic.
