Why should the UK vaccine supply be diverted to Europe?

They ordered 3 months later than the UK. They have themselves less time to sort glitches. They have been slow to the table and now they wish to punish to UK for being efficient.

I was a remain voter. I'm starting to change my mind!

Bookriddle · 28/01/2021 10:45

@RedToothBrush if there is a risk, I want to reduce that risk to myself and family, so if that means getting a vaccine before someone else in a different country that has fucked up with how long it took them to order, not my problem!

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 10:46

What are you talking about @QuentinInQuarantino?

Mass vaccination of the population is the best way to protect it or do you disagree with the science of vaccination?

MessAllOver · 28/01/2021 10:47

@MarshaBradyo. Wasn't it? It's much less fun when everyone's agreeing with you.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 10:47

Covax is a good thing & I agree with it. That doesn't mean I think we should stop vaccinating in the UK.

QuentinInQuarantino · 28/01/2021 10:48

@marbellamarc

What are you talking about *@QuentinInQuarantino*?

Only if you're British though right? This thread is disgusting.
IcedPurple · 28/01/2021 10:49

*This thread was never going to be more than a pile of jingoistic self-congratulation at having "got one over" on Europe, with a few dissenting voices.

All I did was shake it up a bit.*

The EU messed up spectacularly on this. It's OK to say that.

Talking nonsense about healthy young folk sending vaccines to Malawi isn't going to distract from thyis, however much you might hope.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 10:49

I mean, when Boris Johnson has more humanity than you

I want the vaccination to protect my loved ones, why does that mean I have no humanity?
Don't answer that, you'll just make yourself look more stupid.

QuentinInQuarantino · 28/01/2021 10:50

It is okay to say that, but posters are struggling to contain their glee at the thought of vulnerable Europeans dying so they can score political points. Not unlike the daily Mail readers who are thrilled when babies die in the channel.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 10:50

Only if you're British though right? This thread is disgusting.

Another swerve, have you started a thread about why the EU are trying to secure more doses when other countries are struggling?
P.S I wasn't even born here, I'm a European immigrant.

IcedPurple · 28/01/2021 10:51

Only if you're British though right? This thread is disgusting.

What do you think European nations are going to do with vaccines, whenever they finally get round to procuring any in significant numbers? Send them off to Malawi? Or make sure all their adult population, including healthy young people, are vaccinated first?

I'm willing to bet it's the latter.

ODFOD. And do keep your fingers crossed they never need a transplant or a transfusion. Idiot.

I've not done that have I?

Yes. Lots of glee on this thread about the prospect of vulnerable "foreigners" being left unvaccinated while we whizz through our population.

You need to calm down.

There must be an assortment of anti-British threads here where you might feel more at home.

IrmaFayLear · 28/01/2021 10:52

Again, why is it “jingoistic” for the UK to be ahead of the vaccination game, but the EU complaining about it perfectly reasonable and not acting in their own interests?

Do you honestly approve of that German MEP threatening the UK and saying “we must suffer for this”?

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 10:52

ODFOD. And do keep your fingers crossed they never need a transplant or a transfusion. Idiot.

I guess it makes sense in your head but you need to think before you type...

alreadytaken · 28/01/2021 10:54

Havent read the thread - can anyone tell me why the EU is after British made vaccines and not those made in India? Astra Zeneca has contractual arrangements with India, I assum?

IcedPurple · 28/01/2021 10:55

Yes. Lots of glee on this thread about the prospect of vulnerable "foreigners" being left unvaccinated while we whizz through our population.

There is zero 'glee' about this apart from in your own head.

Do you think European govts are going to send vaccines to Malawi once their over 50s have been vaccinated?

QuentinInQuarantino · 28/01/2021 10:56

Whatever @marbellamarc I have neither the time not inclination to argue with stupid.

RedToothBrush · 28/01/2021 10:58

Its not jingoism to point out the differences in purchasing decisions and what either the EU or UK should have considered. Its about discussing rights and responsibilities. I think its reflective of who got what right. We should do that as a matter of learning from mistakes and best practice.

I have to be honest here in saying that had the uk been in the EU still, i suspect the UK would not have gone along with a centralised purchasing anyway and would have broken ranks to ensure their own supply anyway. And that probably would have led to other countries following suit which would have meant the EU itself weren't left in quite the mess it now finds itself.

We would then would have got into a row about not giving supplies to the EU. So it probably wouldn't have ended up being a whole lot different to where we are now tbh.

The only real difference would be being in the EU might have given us a fall back position if we had fucked it up. And not being in the EU means its easier for us to keep hold of what we have.

I think the fact that people thought it was wrong to opt out of the eu programme reflects trust in government and our poor record on large scale projects and public health preparedness and how we have poorly handled the crisis in the early stages (shortages of PPE and out of date PPE for example). I don't necessarily think that was wrong. It shows the degree to which the government needs to rebuild that trust.

Furries · 28/01/2021 11:00

@MarshaBradyo

Whilst you wait for yours are you happy to continue living in lockdown?

I think people that are early 30s or whatever are fine as risk is so low. They don’t mind if age 55 end up in ICU. Unlikely to be them.

Fuck me - well, at least you’ve come right out and shown your way of thinking, which is basically “I’m unlikely to get it bad,y, don’t care if I pass it on to someone older and they end up in ICU”.

On that basis, there’s no point in me bothering to read any more of your posts on this subject.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 11:01

@QuentinInQuarantino looking in the mirror must be difficult then?

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 11:01

But thank you for your excellent contribution to the thread!

MarshaBradyo · 28/01/2021 11:02

Furries you’ve gone off on one. It’s not me suggesting it I’m replying to 30 year old. You need to scroll back.

1dayatatime · 28/01/2021 11:03

Politicians from both the EU and the UK should stay out of this - it's a pure commercial and contractual issue between AZ and the U.K. and separately between AZ and the EU.

If the EU feels that AZ have breached their contract with the EU then they can take legal action. But that has absolutely nothing to do with the U.K. and their separate contract with AZ.
