Why should the UK vaccine supply be diverted to Europe?

lovelemoncurd · 27/01/2021 13:48

They ordered 3 months later than the UK. They have themselves less time to sort glitches. They have been slow to the table and now they wish to punish to UK for being efficient.

I was a remain voter. I'm starting to change my mind!

It’s nothing to do with approval. The EU purchased 400 million doses in advance. The first batch of 100 million was to be delivered to EU for March. They are now saying they aren’t going to deliver them- not because they don’t have it but because they are going to continue giving the bulk of vaccinations they have to the U.K. until they fulfil the U.K. entire order while not even fulfilling the first tranche of vaccines the EU paid for.

If the AZ CEO is telling the truth, the contract they signed with the UK stipulated that their order be fulfilled before any subsequent ones. It's hardly Britain or AZ's fault that the EU didn't even get round to signing a contract for months, just as it still hasn't approved the vaccine.

Whatever way you try to spin it, the EU did a piss poor job here.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 21:24

@Ylvamoon have you read the ceo comments who actually explains it all and no the uk plants couldn't actually supply it all,

Toptotoeunicolour · 27/01/2021 21:25

The desperation of the EU politicians is just excruciating to watch. They have monumentally botched it and are desperately trying to save face by blaming AZ, after having the nerve to "leak" the rumour about it only being 8% effective in over 65's, quickly refuted when the current problem arose because it no longer fitted the narrative. Pitiful on so many levels.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 21:27

@Ylvamoon also the eu are the ones throwing accusations around in this not the uk.
And they were late in placing orders they have got this wrong and this could easily happen to us with future supplies from any vaccine if there becomes a supply issue
Haven't we approved another jab and we are not getting until later yet other countries are , prob because we only approved and signed contracts after them .

MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 21:27

@Ylvamoon

Yep it's about the contracts.

AZ agreed to supply X amount by Y date.
Now they say it's not going to happen because of problems at Z production plant.

So naturally the EU asks why AZ can't deliver as they have other production plants (in the UK) and are able to fulfil most of the order.

My gess is AZ has a "better offer " from somewhere else. And feel they don't have to honour the contract with the EU...

How things are reported in the media is a different issue. Great for a Brexit boost, after to wake up call things like import / export charges. And judging by this thread it's working!

Better offer?

Isn’t it not for profit

cyclingmad · 27/01/2021 21:27

You know leavers took a pasting when they point out about the EU being bullies and plenty said no why would EU be like that they just want a fair deal....

Yeah you can see the fairness now.

Whats betting that 'suspicious package' that was called in, isn't down to the EU...I wouldn't put it past them! They have already voiced the lengths they are prepared to go to

MissEliza · 27/01/2021 21:28

If the AZ CEO is telling the truth. I'm not sure what he'd gain from lying. It's probably better to be in the EU's good books these days, particularly if they're going to be so vindictive.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 27/01/2021 21:28

@WhatKatyDidNxt

You snooze, you lose. I’m sure that would also be the response of the boot was on the other foot Hmm
Totally wrong to do but if Boris had said

YOU SNOOZE YOU LOSE

at the briefing today I think he would have gone up popularity Grin

FitzsimmonsMarvel · 27/01/2021 21:29

@cyclingmad don your tinfoil hat there!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 21:29

@Yivamoon also your guess that Az has a better offer will be wrong as its a not for profit vaccine , so there can't be a better offer

Hmm You are taking that a little to far now
MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 21:32

Fitzsimmons have you read AZ CEO interview?

usuallydormant · 27/01/2021 21:33

So much bull on this thread. No one has see the contract except AZ and the EU. As for that interview with the AZ CEO, well you're a bit naive if you're going to take his word for it. The EU officials say it doesn't represent the contract and want AZ to make it public. I don't know who is right and until people see the contract they can't judge either.

The UK gave emergency approval meaning they just accepted the initial data and have assumed it will work on the elderly despite there being a very small number included in the trials. Possibly a good gamble but a gamble. Az have shown to have been sloppy in the trials and the EU (and the US) are taking a bit longer with new data. A gamble too possibly.

People should tone down the rhetoric and let the lawyers decide.

cyclingmad · 27/01/2021 21:34

Really its not exactly a massive leap though, they have run media campaigns on how unsafe the vaccine us, then admit they were wrong and it was false.Hmm

They are threatening exports then demanding imports....

I mean come on halting production for a few hours isnt that much of a leap

FitzsimmonsMarvel · 27/01/2021 21:34

@usuallydormant excellent post!

We’re pretty much all saying leave it to the lawyers Hmm

Not sure why your post is adding anything

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 21:35

The suspicious package is in no ones interest as it will delay all.
We just need more to be approved as more we have the more we can all distribute.
Have we got one we have approved due in march and one that is close to being able to publish results which hopefully works as well as then be a few about , I think french one is not showing good signs but don't think uk ordered many of that if at all.
It was all a gamble when placing orders as no one knew who would work first or what would be approved
Uk approved pfizer before many as well so it stands to reason we are further ahead.

cyclingmad · 27/01/2021 21:35

If we had trucks driving vaccines over with the wrong paperwork or missing full stop, and lots of sandwiches would they just wave them through or hold them up for hours or days

Exactly! So much speculation and BS on this thread...
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 21:37

@usuallydoormant either way its not the uk's fault in anyway.
But why don't eu publish the contract surely they have a copy of their own contract

Username198 · 27/01/2021 21:40

It’s a global pandemic though. I do feel a bit uneasy receiving the vaccine before someone more vulnerable regardless of where in the world they live. So I’d include the EU but also poorer countries who haven’t got as much money to throw at it as the UK.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 27/01/2021 21:41

I think we have to be careful judging the situation when we don't have all the facts. There are increasing demands to make the contract between AZ and the EU public, let's wait and see.

Glenchase · 27/01/2021 21:42

In terms of vaccinating the world - you always put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others. We can’t work to produce vaccines and boosters, or donate money to pay for them, if our economy goes down the toilet. We need to vaccinate our own country and get the economy moving so we can support other countries.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/01/2021 21:42

If this ends up in the courts, hopefully it will take months to reach judgement, by which time the UK will have received its full allocation

The same thought occurred to me, though I guess it depends where the case was heard? If within the EU, there'd be an obvious motivation to get a move on for once

On a slight tangent, and despite the focus on Covid, I do hope this doesn't turn into a blockade on other EU-manufactured drugs reaching the UK ...
