The Express reports:
"No indication has been given as to why the briefing has suddenly been called, however, it comes less than 24 hours after false reports in the German media caused alarm by claiming the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was ineffective among over-65s."

It could also be to make the announcement about hotel quarantining for those entering the country. I would imagine both subjects.

I'm sorry, I'm definitely not comparing BJ to Jesus, but reading this thread is giving me me 'Blessed are the Cheesemakers' vibes Grin

Thismustbelove · 26/01/2021 16:38

100K deaths I suppose along with bragging about the great rollout of the vaccine?

oakleaffy · 26/01/2021 16:38

Re deaths, how many are from ''Co morbidities?'' ..Very old, obese, diabetic or otherwise vulnerable?

How many collateral deaths are there? Cancer, people not getting cancer diagnosed, or lacking urgent care due to Covid taking priority?
FIL died because he wasn't given routine care ..He caught sepsis and died.
Should have been treated weeks beforehand, but kept being fobbed off.

This country has the worst infection rate in Europe despite lockdowns ..we should have closed borders at outset, been more like Australia and NZ.

RedToothBrush · 26/01/2021 16:38

Hotel quarantine, reassurance over the effectiveness of AZ in the over 65s and a very 'bungled' attempt to 'defuse' the EU / AZ row (which makes matters worse not better as it will inevitably involve flag waving) is my bet.

Jellykat · 26/01/2021 16:40

It'll be about borders / quarantining i bet.
Yet another bloody late decision, should've been done last March fgs!

EssexLioness · 26/01/2021 16:41

Every time I hear we’re getting another announcement, I can’t help thinking FFS what now! 😩

Orangeblossom1977 · 26/01/2021 16:42

Could be schools. The Times is now reporting primaries may go back after half term.

52andblue · 26/01/2021 16:42

my guess is:
Vaccines are effective and we do have enough
(don't listen to those nasty foreigners)
Primary kids back after half term (mistake, imo)
Secondary kids back after Easter - exams to go ahead in diff format
You are all naughty roolz busters - alas, alack, alas etc
I am AMAZING - yah!
with a bit of cod-Latin thrown in.

MrsExpo · 26/01/2021 16:43

DH is watching an old episode of Last of the Summer Wine. Think I’ll stick with that ......

Orangeblossom1977 · 26/01/2021 16:44

"Primary schools can safely reopen after half-term if cases keep falling, government health advisers have concluded.

Public Health England (PHE) said that there was now a “strong case” for the return to class, adding more pressure on Boris Johnson to set out a timetable for primary schools to reopen."

Rosehip10 · 26/01/2021 16:47

It is due to 100,000 dead in UK.

JovialNickname · 26/01/2021 16:47

I have a slight sick gut churning feeling as there wasn't supposed to be an announcement today? Plus Pesto has gone quiet.

I think too it's some kind of "We Shall Overcome" vaccine supply speech by our illustrious leader, followed by something about quarantine and hotels.

itsgettingweird · 26/01/2021 16:50

Adding my voice. Nothing to add right now but I'm sure I will, once he starts talking Grin

itsgettingweird · 26/01/2021 16:54

Just had a look at data dashboard.

Death rate per 100,000k varies quite a bit region by region.

SW 89.6
SE 138.9
London 146.6
East 144.1
East Mids 163
West Mids 172.9
Yorkshire/Humber 178.9
NE 198.7
NW 203.4

I know there's lots of questions about our death rate and why it's high. Does anyone know if they've look at why the rate differs so much across the country?

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 26/01/2021 16:56

From Peston '“20,000 is a good outcome” said Sir Patrick Vallance
in March. Today, in the conservative measure used by the government (deaths within 28 days of a #Covid_19 test) total coronavirus deaths are 100,162 - with 1631 reported today'

Johnson needs to address how world beating that is.

Bluntness100 · 26/01/2021 16:58

The death rate is so high because so many elderly people are infected. The average age is 82 of those who die. Which means we are the stand alone nation that is totally and utterly unable to protect our elderly

They are becoming infected in care homes, hospitals, and at home, either via family or carers visiting.

RedToothBrush · 26/01/2021 16:59

Before everyone gets carried away with a policy of Quaratine Hotels and how its not really like NZ, keep in mind..:

Richard Chambers @newschambers
Taoiseach says there's been 'early talk' on a two-island approach to travel between Ireland and the UK.

Why not #zerocovid?

Taoiseach says "I don't think it's possible or sustainable... it's a promise you can't fulfil..."

He says we cannot seal the border... and "likewise with the UK" and then Europe.

He says suppression "can be effective" with vaccine rollout.

Book your ferry or flight early to avoid disappointment...

rwalker · 26/01/2021 17:02

Cant't be arsed what ever it's about half the country will agree half won't and everyone knows best TBH done it it all.

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/01/2021 17:03

Is it on yet? Doesn't seem to have started on the No. 10 twitter feed..

GreatSoprendo · 26/01/2021 17:03

Listening to Sky News, I think its because we have exceeded 100,000 deaths today and he is going to (and bloody well should) acknowledge this

SunshineOutdoors · 26/01/2021 17:06

Why are they always late?

GingerandTilly · 26/01/2021 17:06

1600 deaths today - really hope schools don’t open yet. How can that be safe?

TimeForLunch · 26/01/2021 17:09

1600 deaths today - really hope schools don’t open yet. How can that be safe?

Because the deaths are related to infections that happened weeks ago. Case numbers are falling significantly.

GabsAlot · 26/01/2021 17:09

has he brushed the hair today

pumpkinsoups · 26/01/2021 17:09

@ineedaholidaynow

On BBC website it says it is about vaccine supply
Quite likely given that the EU are making moves to stop the vaccines made in the EU leaving the EU. Thanks Brexit voters.
