6.3 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4129412-1-5-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

6,353,321 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 1 in every 8.3 adults. It’s a truly remarkable achievement to have reached so many people in such a short space of time.

Welcome to the new thread and let’s keep the positive vibes going! Grin

I really hope they vaccinate people in customer facing roles. I'd rather they had it before me as I can shelter away. Retired.

PuzzledObserver · 01/02/2021 22:16

I think they will do 10 year age brackets rather than 5.... and there’s the debate about certain occupational groups getting done first... and of course, completing the second doses for groups 5-9.

I think they will announce the plan probably about mid-March, when they’re within sight of completing groups 1-9.

May also need to be a booster plan, depending how the variants pan out.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 01/02/2021 22:20

Not convinced they will go with keyworkers next now. The 40s age group still has a slightly higher risk than most. At least the 45+ do. Not much but plenty of hospitalisation. They may just stick to age.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 01/02/2021 22:22

Oh and the parents of those infection riddled teenagers are mostly 40s and 50s. So pretty at risk no matter what their actual job.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 01/02/2021 22:23

If they are sending key workers out to be spat at, sit in tiny rooms etc then they should look after them. Duty of care.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 01/02/2021 22:24

I just feel they should go before me. Just my opinion though.

lurker101 · 01/02/2021 22:33

I think logistically it will be too difficult to get all key workers vaccinated first, it would be very straightforward for teachers, Sainsbury’s, national rail, TFL staff etc. to be prioritised, but so much harder to include key workers working at the corner shop, takeaways etc. who would be equally as exposed as someone working for a chain supermarket.
I think they might give teachers/transport workers access to an online booking system a few days in advance of starting on the under 40s, because there would be so few people included that it would probably only take a few days to vaccinate them all if they were all to book, and it’s an easy political thing to do and say they’ve prioritised key workers, without putting those most at risk of severe illness or death at risk. It would be wrong to put key workers ahead of even the over 50s in my view based on the death breakdowns

Mumski45 · 01/02/2021 22:45

Am I being too optimistic with the following calculation.

  • no of Vaccines given in England up to 31/1/21 was 8.5m

-current run rate is about 2.5m per week

  • by end Feb we will have vaccinated another 10m ish people so about 18.5m.
  • the number of people in groups 1 - 6 is 20.5m with a take up rate of 90% that gives us about 18.5m

Hence we should have almost finished groups 1-6 by end of Feb and that's assuming we don't increase to more than 2.5m per week.
DH is diabetic so in group 6 and thinks he won't get his till mid March but I think he might be pleasantly surprised in the next few weeks.

Mumski45 · 01/02/2021 22:48

Oops just realised I haven't accounted for 2nd doses so back to my calculator. 😳

Mumski45 · 01/02/2021 22:51

Actually as vaccination started on 8th December the 12 week gap isn't up until early March and the first 400k or so have already had a second dose so my calculations to end Feb might still work.

Feeling optimistic for DH.

PuzzledObserver · 01/02/2021 22:53

@Mumski45 the number of people who will need to have had their 2nd dose before end of Feb is negligible, given the rollout only started on 8th December.

In other news.... this report from Israel is very encouraging: www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55706855

PuzzledObserver · 01/02/2021 22:55

@Mumski45 actually, check your number in groups 1-6. Groups 1-4 is 13.9 million, and group 6 alone is nearly 9 million.

Mumski45 · 01/02/2021 23:02

@PuzzledObserver thanks. Please can you let me know your source for those numbers as the document I'm looking at has 12m in gp 1-4, 2.4m in gp5 and 6.1m in gp6. I'm looking at England only not UK and this was published on 11 Jan.

I think your DH might be pleasantly surprised too! My sister is group 6 (she is 38 but has Down’s syndrome) and is getting hers on Wednesday Smile
Frazzled6 · 01/02/2021 23:02

I think it was stated tonight that 50 percent of the 70 plus category had already been vaccinated. My guess is still that 65 years plus will be able to book later this week and maybe finished by 15th February.

buttery81 · 02/02/2021 06:42

Oh I hope so Frazzled!

And that’s very encouraging news from Israel Puzzled

@Wherediditgo people with DS were added to the CEV list in November so your sister is on target for her first dose as over 70s and CEV are being vaccinated now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2021 08:08

Wherediditgo I think your sister should be group 4. Guidance was updated In November to put adults with down syndrome into CEV. I'm glad she is getting the jab tomorrow.

chickychicchic · 02/02/2021 08:17

I was so relieved about dad getting his now just waiting for mums

PuzzledObserver · 02/02/2021 08:22

@Mumski45. Ah, I see what’s going on. I was using UK figures (from the graphic on the BBC website) and you were talking about England. Sorry to wrongly burst your bubble.... with my jabby jabby needle

Wilma55 · 02/02/2021 08:24

BBC reporting over 65s can book from next week. That's me!

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 02/02/2021 08:28

Wow that's group 5. It's moved a group! Fantastic!

PilatesPeach · 02/02/2021 08:40

I volunteer at a hub, the numbers we are doing are increasing each day as we get more supply and also now onto the Oxford AZ which does not require the 15 minute observation time afterwards the way the Pfizer does so again this helps get more through. Subject to supplies staying steady, I think the daily numbers vaccinated will stay high and there is talk of some more satellite hubs being added so hopefully numbers will go up. Lots of volunteers available so that should not be an issue afaik.

Frazzled2207 · 02/02/2021 09:14

Great. @PilatesPeach
Can I ask how you got involved? I have applied via St. John ambulance and not got anywhere due to no f2f training slots available. I have also emailed gps who were asking for people and never heard anything.
