For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

@TeaInTheGarden no one knows, things could well improve soon with the rate of vaccinations- next few weeks will be interesting and hopefully positive 🤞. Also the teachers on here probably don’t represent the views of the majority. Try not not be upset.

TheChineseChicken · 24/01/2021 10:20

@Pomegranatespompom

Good morning. Lots of snow here and my snow drops are out in the garden.

I’d advise avoiding reading the school threads.

This should be a life motto
TheChineseChicken · 24/01/2021 10:21

@FourTeaFallOut

Watching Andrew Marr and Hancock just said three quarters over 80s have had the vaccine now.
That’s an astonishing feat - 75% uptake overall would have been impressive but this is 75% without them all being offered yet. I wonder what the uptake will be in the end?
chri55ie · 24/01/2021 10:24

Also I think there has been a plan mentioned in papers about vaccinating teachers over half term? That surely would help things

Furries · 24/01/2021 10:31

@Frazzled2207

Nearly half a million jabs a day is terrific. I do hope that the supply will keep up.

I’m involved in the novavax vaccine trial and we’re all hoping for preliminary results from that in the next fortnight. It could be here by April. UK government has ordered 60 million doses of the stuff. I hope they have their manufacturing organised.

This question has probably been asked before, so apologies if I’m repeating. Once the trial is over, are you then told if you had the vaccine or the placebo?
Fembot123 · 24/01/2021 10:32

Place marking for some positivity

Frazzled2207 · 24/01/2021 10:34

@Furries
Not necessarily but we can ask- it doesn’t fully finish until the autumn as they understandably want to know about longer term immunity (that doesn’t stop it being approved before the trial is up though)
However if any any point before then we are offered the vaccine we are able to ask to be unblinded. We have been told we shouldn’t go and get any other vaccine unless it is confirmed we had the placebo.

Frazzled2207 · 24/01/2021 10:35

Ps several people (on here) have been unblinded and it turns out they all had the real thing. Lots of reports of their family getting ill and they not which is obviously positive though entirely anecdotal at this stage

Furries · 24/01/2021 10:38

Slightly jealous of those that have snow. We hardly ever get snow here, have got a thick white frost, though, which looks pretty.

This little chap is my positivity button - he’s a natural comic and makes me laugh at least once a day.

Fantastic news re the uptake in the over 80’s.

[quote Jenasaurus]As this is the good news thread, thought I would share this. First time seeing snow and woke up to see this.

Checking in!

I've been accepted as a vaccination steward, just waiting for the call now...

Furries · 24/01/2021 10:41

@louisejxxx - so cute! Love the fact that 3 cat nutters all posted at the same time!

Furries · 24/01/2021 10:45

@Frazzled2207 - thanks, that’s interesting to know. And great re those on here who were unblinded and didn’t catch it.

Jenasaurus · 24/01/2021 10:49

Furries and Louise nothing like a lovely little fur baby to lighten the mood

BigWoollyJumpers · 24/01/2021 10:51

Surrey - About 3 or 4 inches - Which is a lot for us Grin. It's that lovely, heavy, fluffy, huge flake stuff, so it has coated all the trees. Ahhhhhh. Started at 8.30 and still going. We are rural, so road has disappeared.

I am assuming few/no vaccinations will take place today Sad.

2020CanDoOne · 24/01/2021 10:51

@TeaInTheGarden this is the article about teacher vaccinations (sorry it’s the daily fail)
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9179961/amp/Headteachers-send-Boris-Johnson-plan-vaccinate-one-million-staff-half-term.html

louisejxxx · 24/01/2021 10:53

@Jenasaurus @Furries we got our 2 during the first lockdown and I can’t imagine what it would have been like without them - they’ve provided so much love and entertainment since then!

Frazzled2207 · 24/01/2021 11:00

@TeaInTheGarden @2020CanDoOne
there's another thread about that article. All very far fetched and won't go anywhere is the consensus. Schools are closed to limit community spread NOT to protect teachers and vaccinating teachers will do almost nothing to address that
(I fully teachers being vaccinated BTW)

Mindymomo · 24/01/2021 11:03

75% of over 80’s is really good. I know of a few over 90’s who are housebound and waiting for a visit, so imagine once these are vaccinated, the numbers will increase further.

Agreed. As much as I hate to consider it I suppose schools will be closed until after Easter as that would be 3ish weeks after over 50s are vaccinated by end March (as is the plan). Unless community cases dropped dramatically before then, which I suppose they could. We started lockdown nearly 3 months earlier than last year so have a headstart.

Shitzngiggles · 24/01/2021 11:09

Hi all, can I join? So pleased to have found this thread. So much negativity around and I'm a naturally upbeat person.
So impressed with the vaccination roll out, everyone working so hard to get this done. Its amazing what can be achieved when people pull together.
I had my jab a week ago, so pleased to have had it done. The surgery where I went was so well organised, plenty of social distancing and sanitising and all of the staff were just wonderful.
Its snowing here in Surrey so a nice bit of distraction.

Frazzled2207 · 24/01/2021 11:15

@TheChineseChicken
yep
After Easter is realistic but I still (want to) believe that sometime in March could be feasible if we see a sharp decline in cases and more importantly hospitalisations/deaths soon. I think this could happen in February.

Yep, am keeping everything crossed for before then. Who knows
