For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

So that's the 24th of February when parliament reconvenes after recess, plus the two weeks grace which schools need to get organised and also coincides with the time that people vaccinated at the end of the first four groups will have a good amount of immunity following the first dose.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/01/2021 13:48

If it plays out like that I will be unbearably happy. Brace for it.

EmmanuelleMakro · 27/01/2021 13:52

@FourTeaFallOut
Yes!

carolinesbaby · 27/01/2021 13:54

If that's what we get (reopening for the 8/3) then I can be happy with that.
Am I right in my sims, that at the current rate we are on track to have done the first dose for the top 4 groups by the 15/2?

OrangeBananaFish · 27/01/2021 14:00

So it's now counting down to 22nd Feb for further news. Hopefully by then cases will keep on their downward trend and hospitals and deaths will also be following.

8th March is better than Easter or September like some seem to be certain of Hmm Although no promises, but you cant blame them for that.

MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 14:04

Yes 8th March better than most say on here

The two week notice feels like overkill. And that rankles

FourTeaFallOut · 27/01/2021 14:05

Yeah, think so. Every hope feels like quicksand given all the variables but I think it will be ok.

Mousehole10 · 27/01/2021 14:05

That is good news. Not really late like the scaremongers said but not too early that it would hamper the lockdown. If cases continue to drop like they’re currently doing, and the vaccine rollout continues to be good then we should be in quite a strong position by early March.

louisejxxx · 27/01/2021 14:08

I think it’s really good news because I do really fear that once we get to the anniversary of going into the first lockdown towards the end of March, that may be a big turning point for many when it comes to following restrictions so closely. If we are atleast already clued in on the plan by then and have made a few tentative steps towards normality, then hopefully that will keep everyone invested in hanging on a bit longer.

I think it's a mistake. Let's say they announce it, people will start mixing because why not, they'll be mixing in school soon enough.

Cases go up, schools u-turn happens later than it should, lockdown again.

namechangefail2020 · 27/01/2021 14:11

I'm still waiting for him to mention pubs! I jest, I know schools are more important. Kind of 🤣

starfish88 · 27/01/2021 14:12

I'm an optomist and I was expecting Easter so this does seem positive despite how everyone seems to be taking it. Maybe because in school the terms and half terms end up being the major focus. A half a half term is unheard of! But I'll take it!

TeaInTheGarden · 27/01/2021 14:14

I can cope with 8 March. By then all those vaccinated by 15 Feb should have immunity.

oscarandelliesdad · 27/01/2021 14:16

@FourTeaFallOut,
Sorry to be thick but I'm stuck on the Scotland sitting on vaccines thing... Explain to me what Nicola's been up to?? Thanks

FourTeaFallOut · 27/01/2021 14:23

The vaccine program in Scotland is slower than was anticipated and so there is more doses waiting in the wings than you'd expect. When questioned on it, Sturgeon said yesterday it's a result of focusing on the most vulnerable in caring homes which is more logistically tricky than the rest of the population and that's fair enough, I think. But it does mean that the when we see the daily figures it is doses administered rather taken delivery of.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 27/01/2021 14:25

Scotland is at 8.5% and England are at 10ish I think? I know there's uproar in certain quarters about this but I don't think the discrepancy is massive. We're vaccinating around 23/24k people a day.

Ah, makes sense. Ta.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 27/01/2021 14:35

Beijing is using anal swabs to test its residents for coronavirus, a method that experts say is more accurate and raises the chances of detecting the virus.

Shock No just no

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 14:37

NOT good news, lol.

Imagine doing that in your car at a testing centre

starfish88 · 27/01/2021 14:42

I can't see them rolling it out for mass testing!! Plus unless someone is doing it for you surely there's an incentive to not do it properly if a positive would see you welded into your home.

Schools have been complaining that everything keeps getting sprung on them last minute. That is why.

Plus if they still want schools to mass test first day back. That requires a lot of extra organisation and possibly volunteers.

thatgingergirl · 27/01/2021 14:48

That swab! Grin

Reminds me of a spoof "Covid-Secure" sign at our vets - "Pets will be collected from your car or at the surgery door. If you enter the premises with your pet, we will be obliged to take your temperature. Note: We only have rectal thermometers available. Think on."
