To think that we need to Reopen Gyms

Coconut1978 · 22/01/2021 13:04

With the weather this time of year it’s so horrible to exercise outside and the parks are packed making it difficult to run.

It’s really hurting my mental and physical health not being able to adequately exercise.

I’m at a low risk of covid if I was infected and have already had the virus and recovered.

We know that obese nations like the US, UK and Mexico have done worse with the virus than nations like Japan and the Netherlands who are healthier.

I think as long as numbers are managed you should be able to book to use the gym and social distance and clean in there.

There are so few cases linked to gyms and they are a really low infection risk but are so beneficial to many of our mental and physical health.

Aibu to think gyms should be included in our daily exercise given our climate and poor health.

I got seriously into BodyPump before lockdown. It was extremely safe at my gym- only 6 places were available, marked out on the floor in the studio with all equipment and sanitiser within each box. The instruction was virtual and all equipment was sanitised by the cleaners after use.

I am now trying to find £300-£500 to buy all the equipment needed if I want to continue at home, for something that was included in my monthly membership. While I can do Zumba, body conditioning and pilates at home, this is an activity that you cannot do without the necessary equipment!

Updatemate · 22/01/2021 18:30

@alltheadrenalin

Definitely! I was a member at pure gym and they went above and beyond. Felt safer there then in a supermarket. Cleaning stations throughout. Use before and afterwards on all equipment, limited numbers and everything was spread out.
But what about the air? They cannot clean the air and that is where the risk is!
dreamingbohemian · 22/01/2021 18:31

Everyone who's agreeing with the OP and saying gyms are essential -- you do realise loads of people can't afford gym fees and still manage to exercise?

I'm sorry but it just sounds so precious to be complaining about not being able to do your preferred form of exercise. We're all making sacrifices, maybe try to be more creative.

Enidblyton1 · 22/01/2021 18:37

I dont like gyms, but I do sympathise. It’s so relentlessly muddy at the moment and many gyms could be reopened in a secure way.

However, I personally don’t think anything should be reopened until schools are.

Exercising as an adult is hard enough right now. Trying to get kids to exercise is even harder Sad

LimitIsUp · 22/01/2021 18:38

YABU - if you feel its too busy for a run or bike ride etc locally then get up earlier

Enidblyton1 · 22/01/2021 18:40

@Againstmachine

School shouldn't neccessary be the first thing to open if there are other low risk activitys that could be opened before.
My initial reaction was to agree with this. But it’s the thin end of the wedge. If 99% of gyms are safe and the other 1% are not, covid cases will rise. If someone goes on public transport to reach the gym they may catch covid that way. This is why, although your comment seems logical, it’s difficult to justify when schools are closed. We need to do everything in our power to let schools reopen - the ramifications are going to be huge if we continue to keep children at home.

I hope you watched the daily briefing. YABU

Sexnotgender · 22/01/2021 18:47

@Coconut1978

But exercising outdoors is not enjoyable given the weather and sheer volumes of people out. It means I cannot really run because I’m constantly stopping and moving into the road or grass.
Neither is taking my toddler out for his umpteenth walk of the week but given his nursery is shut I don’t have much choice. Apparently we all need to just suck it up so YABU.

If I can’t use childcare for my toddler whilst I work full time then I don’t really give a shit about gyms.

JabbyMcJabface · 22/01/2021 18:48

@Sexnotgender why is the nursery closed? Isolating due to cases?

Sexnotgender · 22/01/2021 18:50
@Sexnotgender why is the nursery closed? Isolating due to cases?
All nurseries in Scotland are shut unless BOTH parents are key workers AND they both work outside the home.

AKissAndASmile · 22/01/2021 18:57

YABU

I'm not sure why you think gyms are safe. They're one of the highest risk environments so it's right that they are closed.

MrsPernicious · 22/01/2021 19:00

For those needing to workout at home with very little space and no equipment have you tried CellWorkOut

JabbyMcJabface · 22/01/2021 19:03

I hadn’t realised nurseries were closed north do the border. That’s tough, I’m sorry.

If it’s any consolation, even though they are open down here nearly everyone I know has their kids at home isolating.

Australia has higher obesity rates than the UK. They haven't done too badly with the virus.

I'm a bit of a gym bunny but I've managed to keep up my exercise routine during lockdown. My gym loaned out equipment and switched to online classes which helps.

ThePricklySheep · 22/01/2021 19:17

Being obese doesn’t mean you are more likely to catch it though. Japan has a really low number of cases.

wanderings · 22/01/2021 19:28

Yep. Saint Boris himself told us "we need to be fitter to resist the virus".

But it's a moot point, soon there won't be any gyms left: Saint Boris will have bankrupted them all. They're still having to pay costs of existing, for no income.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 22/01/2021 19:44

@Borisjohnsonshairbrush

Completely agree, I've slipped and fallen 4x in a week now due to the weather.

Exercise stops me reaching for booze during this shitty time. 2 bed flat too OP. Barely any space at all.
Sick of the dirty looks I get from people walking dogs etc yet it's me that has to run in the road. Oh and I have tried running at 5am etc but while it's still dark I feel vulnerable

And then you piss off the drivers Grin I actually got stuck behind a jogger today. On a road, just off a dual carriageway, paths were empty, really not sure what she was up to, dressed all in black with no reflective gear...Hmm Now if she had a gym to go to... Wink
PaddyF0dder · 22/01/2021 19:48

I really miss the gym. I was so pissed off when they closed again, particularly as they were closed for so long in the first lockdown.

No. Gyms should NOT be open right now. The very idea is ludicrous. There are plenty of exercise options at home, and outside.

Hopefully they'll be one of the first things to reopen. After school but long before the fucking pubs.

You really need to get some better shoes for running in the winter www.runnersradar.com/canicross/canicross-trail-running-shoes-review

Gyms are probably going to be quite a long way down the queue of things to open.

Running in mud gets you really fit very quickly.

Tanith · 22/01/2021 19:51

I'd like to see swimming pools open before gyms.
Wasn't it thought that the chlorine in the pool killed the virus, or has that been disproved now?

higglepiggley · 22/01/2021 19:55

No.
Schools open to all first before anything else

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/01/2021 19:57

Schools before gyms , kids need to be prioritised.

Sexnotgender · 22/01/2021 20:21

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

Schools before gyms , kids need to be prioritised.
Absolutely. People are quite capable of exercising without gyms.

Children need to be prioritised. I feel so sorry for them.

echt · 22/01/2021 20:26

Nobody needs a gym.

JM10 · 22/01/2021 20:41

However, I can't support reopening gyms while the schools are still closed.

Exactly. What about the mental health of all the children who have mainly been home for almost a year now too? I would be furious if the government opened gyms before schools.
