To think that we need to Reopen Gyms

With the weather this time of year it’s so horrible to exercise outside and the parks are packed making it difficult to run.

It’s really hurting my mental and physical health not being able to adequately exercise.

I’m at a low risk of covid if I was infected and have already had the virus and recovered.

We know that obese nations like the US, UK and Mexico have done worse with the virus than nations like Japan and the Netherlands who are healthier.

I think as long as numbers are managed you should be able to book to use the gym and social distance and clean in there.

There are so few cases linked to gyms and they are a really low infection risk but are so beneficial to many of our mental and physical health.

Aibu to think gyms should be included in our daily exercise given our climate and poor health.

Oh don’t be so ridiculous, if you can weight train with a set from amazon for under £100 you can swim in an inflatable pool from argos.

I think you need to change your mindset, I run at 7.30 am, it’s quiet and I can get a good run. I weight training from home and do some boxing. It’s not ideal but I can honestly say it’s made such a positive contribution to my mental health.

You can train bodyweight though. As I said, I used to do squats and deadlines (not superstrong but 110% bw and I started aged 51), and have built strength during pandemic without going to an indoor gym once, bought some kit eg p-bars for home and used calisthenics parks which have been open much of the time, an outdoor bootcamp which again has run much of the time, and other stuff in parks. I am exercising loads and enjoying it. I agree with others about mindset: if you don't want to adapt or change what you do temporarily, that's fine, but it is possible and will help you maintain fitness and mental and physical health in the meantime. That will make it easier to regain any lost ground when you can get back in the gym - I am not sure I will go back because I enjoy much of the new stuff I am doing so much and making gains.
