Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

Mine was similar symptoms to when I have a flu jab,

DenisetheMenace · 04/03/2021 20:23

Cloudyrainsham

I had AZ a week ago, no dude effects at all“

So no sudden urge to drink White Russians and bowl?

ZNation · 04/03/2021 20:26

Improved today just have sore arm

NellePorter · 04/03/2021 20:41

I am in my 40s. Upset stomach started 14 hours after the vaccine. Flu-like symptoms and sore arm 6 hours after that.

@ZammoUK

Some important things for people to note.
  1. The AZ (Oxford AstraZeneca) vaccine will give people most side effects on the FIRST dosage. With much less side effects on the SECOND dosage. So everyone who had terrible side effects on dose 1 of AZ can rest easy that the 2nd dose is very likely to be a doddle in comparison.

  2. For the Pfizer (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine the most side effects will be noticeable on the SECOND dose. So this is the opposite to the AZ vaccine. So because most Brits are on their 1st dose of a vaccine nearly all the negatives are currently for the AZ vaccine, but this will change around when Pfizer people get their second dose. So this thread will change a bit by April and May.

  3. Those under 55 are much more likely to suffer side effects from either vaccine than those over 55. This is because you have a much stronger immune system when younger, so when the vaccine enters the body the stronger the immune reaction the stronger the side effects. This is why your 80 year old mother may sail through the vaccines while you, her daughter, at 40 have fever and the shakes and feel rough. Best way to look at it is the worse the side effects, generally the stronger your immune system is (not the opposite).

  4. Because the vaccines do not contain a live virus it does not replicate, which means most side effects will last for a maximum of 36 hours and then will quite often vanish like a light switch has been pressed. With a proper virus it keeps growing and the immune system has to keep attacking each replication, but the vaccine does not grow or progress, so once attacked the threat is over soon. This does not include the sore arm though as that is down to muscle repairing.

  5. Be thankful you are not taking the Moderna vaccine, although the best for protection it is 3 times more potent, so the 2nd dose of that would quite likely knock you for six Smile

Hope this helps explain some things.

Wow thanks for this

Well I had mine just over 48 hours ago and apart from a sore arm and feeling very tired yesterday late afternoon and evening I have been fine. I am 42.

hippityhippityhop · 04/03/2021 22:36

I had the AZ two days ago. I'm 32. Felt fine for the first 10 hours afterwards then felt absolutely horrendous. I was boiling ( couldn't find thermometer but I was so hot that I thought my hands and feet were going to fall off) and had an awful headache. Felt crap the next day but after about 36 hours I felt fine but really really hungry. So pleased to have had it though. So grateful for our amazing nhs!

sneakysnoopysniper · 04/03/2021 22:40

Ive been having flu vaccinations for years with no obvious ill effects, although relative of mine always has mild flue symptoms (headache/shivers/slight temperature) for a day or so afterwards. I had these symptoms after the AZ vaccine but quite mild and I could carry on WAH. I just took paracetamol.

The symptoms are much preferable to getting CV-19 in a person my age.

NellePorter · 05/03/2021 08:23

Please don't be afraid to have the vaccine. Even though I don't feel well after having it, I'd much rather a few days of discomfort than having Covid! So grateful to have had it, and as many people have noted they haven't had any side effects at all.

Haven’t RTFT but lots of clever people on here.

I don’t know, but having read several posts in various threads of younger people feeling rubbish, I wonder if it’s because they already have strong immune systems which are responding more vigorously?

Husband, 61, CEV with compromised immune system felt vaguely unwell for a day. I’m 56, hopefully won’t be too long now, our daughter is 26, son is 18 I’m expecting that all of our responses will be more dramatic, the kids particularly so.

No worries about that. We’d all rather be jabbed in the eyes with an elephant syringe than contract Covid.

Itsjustricemichael · 05/03/2021 08:39

Are we meant to report side effects on the yellow card site?

Popetthetreehugger · 05/03/2021 08:41

DH had his yesterday, within 6 hours feeling really rubbish, Iv left him in bed with a temperature, burning all night , shaking , but did sleep . I gave 2 paracetamol and 2 bottles of water . He’s going to spend day on sofa ( not him at all !) not looking forward to mine on Monday 😬

mooshie06 · 05/03/2021 08:44

Had my AZ one just after 9 yesterday morning. Under my tongue felt dry afterwards (prob anxiety), had a horrible taste in mouth like previous poster said - like beconase nasal spray that’s dripped. Felt ok til mid afternoon when felt a bit tired. By teatime felt carsick and food smells turned my tummy. This lasted all evening. Woke up with a bit on an upset tummy this morning and mildly aching arm. Still feel a bit carsick. No fever here but I did take regular paracetamol yesterday to avoid the bad head as I suffer with migraines. I’m 40 and think I had covid mildly last Feb tho no testing was available at that point.

For anyone who is nervous - I was totally terrified and barely slept the night before my jab but it was ok and my side effects have been very manageable. Good luck all x

Frozenintime · 05/03/2021 08:47

Sore arm, headache, stiff neck today. Feeling really off

Lovelydaybut · 05/03/2021 08:55

Had mine yesterday
Felt lijj kg e crap all night
Now have a headache
But so happy to be vaccinated!!!

AnxietyDrivingMyLife · 05/03/2021 09:08

I’m a nervous one- not just for the immediate side effects which I might or might not have but also for the unknown long term effects...
It’s like being stuck between a rock and a hard place

Wesaed · 05/03/2021 09:11

Sore arm, hypersensitive skin, very achey, just washed out. Took a day off work to lie on the sofa and had an early night, then fine the next day.

Florelei · 05/03/2021 09:12

For anyone who is scared to have the vaccine please don’t be. I had the AZ vaccine and whilst I felt ill this lasted only 12 hours. This is a walk in the part compared to covid.

PLEASE PLEASE GO FOR YOUR VACCINE. Smile Flowers

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/03/2021 09:15

Oxford one yesterday. Bit of a sore arm this morning but so far so good. In my 40s.

Woodandsky · 05/03/2021 09:17

I had mine yesterday afternoon, just a slightly sore arm so far

WhataMissMap · 05/03/2021 09:27

I had no side effects for the first 48 hours. Then I developed a “ feeling of fatigue and headache which lasted for a few days. I am early 50s.
My husband, early 60, developed side effects within the first 24 hours- temperature and head ache. He went to bed and 8.30 pm and woke up feeling fine the next day.
My mother 90+ and two aunts in their 80s has no symptoms whatsoever.
My colleague, early 50s, who had Covid earlier in the year felt really ill for 24 hours after the vaccination, but still managed to work.
We all had the AZ.
Interesting.

Livpool · 05/03/2021 09:40

I am feeling fine apart from a sore arm. My DM felt fatigued for about 12 hours but apart from that no issues.

Infinitely better than catching COVID and being in ICU

Whatafabulousday · 05/03/2021 09:46

I'm 55 had it yesterday, felt completely fine. Woke up this morning - feel perfectly well. Can feel my arm where I had it but wouldn't stop me doing anything. I was excited the night before not scared, I cried a bit when I went in with the happiness of being privileged enough to be receiving it.

Long term side effects? Wouldn't even cross my mind, only thing I'm considering long term is holidays right now!

MeolsCop · 05/03/2021 13:42

I had mine yesterday, was hoping for Pfizer as DH got this, but it was Oxford-AZ. He had zero symptoms. I felt fine until bedtime when I started to feel quite shivery, headachey and hot. Took myself off to sleep and had one of those nights of hyper-real dreams you get when you're a bit feverish.

This morning I still felt headachey and not right, so stayed in bed for a bit. When I eventually got up to make some tea I thought I was going to faint - it came over me in a wave. This is completely not me; I've never fainted in my life. So pretty sure it's reaction to the jab.

Still very glad I've had it, though.
