Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

Update. The "other half" has been in QE Brum now for 17 days with a septic leg which he had previously overcome some months previously.
The ambulance team found he had a temperature of over 38.C. and the chills and breathing was not good. So emergency admission- Drips etc.
They found an antibiotic that could hold the infection but not clear it. He had to wait for 9 days for an MRI. Results today no bone infection or morbidity [Thank God].

He has now found out the vaccine was Pfizer and NOT Astra Zeneca which he wanted but was not given the option. it has been a scarey time.

Musicaltheatremum · 24/02/2021 19:52

Wait until dose two...that's worse

AgnesNaismith · 24/02/2021 20:40

Is it @Musicaltheatremum? What experience do you have? Just so I can prepare myself!!

Cookerhood · 24/02/2021 20:48

Oh don't be so dramatic. There is some evidence that side effects are better for the second dose for AZ. No point in scaring people unnecessarily.

RoseWineTime · 24/02/2021 20:53

I had my first jab on Sunday - only side effect was a slightly sore arm. I’m part of a new trial to test mixing vaccine first and second doses so don’t know whether I had Pfizer or Oxford AZ. Very curious though!

Idontbelieveit12 · 25/02/2021 00:29

I had it on Sunday. Arm still very sore and a big lump there now. Had chills Monday night just couldn’t get warm.

FluffySocks75 · 25/02/2021 05:18

It's absolutely all in the head.

There is NO WAY different immune systems react differently to different things. Everyone always reacts exactly the same. Fact.

It's like with actual covid 99.9% of people get it asymptomatically. Because 0.1% have claimed to feel a bit ill we not have people in hospitals psychosomatically demanding they go on cpap/have tubes shoved down their throats. They should just remind themselves most people are fine with it and stop thinking negatively. Immune systems are all identical, anyone who thinks otherwise is imagining it.

Hmm
OzziePopPop · 25/02/2021 05:36

I’ve had it, no side effects apart from a slightly sore arm at the injection site for a few days. Apparently it’s less likely to cause side effects than the Pfizer jab. Sounds like op knows a few unlucky people. Still worth it!

This is wrong on so many levels that I don't know where to start. Where did you study immunology?

I’ve heard the opposite. That AZ more likely to give some mild side effects compared to Pfizer.
ILookAtTheFloor · 25/02/2021 08:26

My mum had the AZ on Monday and was in bed all day Tuesday feeling very rough after it! She was shocked, I'd warned her that my colleagues who'd had the AZ all felt poorly after . Hopefully it's just her immune system being efficient!

I had the Pfizer and only had a sore arm, await second dose to see if it will be worse!

CeeJay81 · 25/02/2021 08:30

I'm having it a week Friday. Not looking forward to side effects. Hubby and a colleague both had it recently and felt rather rough the next day. It's his birthday the day after I get mine too. I've ordered a nice cake, I hope i feel like eating it. My DD won't be happy if i don't feel like celebrating daddy's birthday.

pursuedbyablackdog · 25/02/2021 08:59

cookerhead I think you'll find fluffysocks is taking the piss! 😂

pursuedbyablackdog · 25/02/2021 09:00

Oops sorry cookerhood I got your user name wrong...my bad😬

Had the AZ vaccine yesterday 10:45am.

Felt fine for most part of the day but around 9pm was suddenly hit with one of the most horrid wave of fatigue, fever and shivers started as well.
Arm hurt so bad, I thought I was going crazy with the pain.
Had to put the heater on throughout the night as the shivers were quite bad.
Horrible night due to body ache, arm hurt like a bitch.
Woke up this morning feeling my head was gonna split in 2 and body still aching quite badly. Took a cocodamol and feeling much better since.
Actually being able to function properly around the house, took the day off from work today as thought I would need it(wfh)but I actually could have worked today..
Very grateful for the vaccine and can't wait for my 2nd dose.

Abraxan · 25/02/2021 13:23

I had my vaccine yesterday. Had the Pfizer vaccine. Was told all about possible side effects by the person doing the injection, plus given a leaflet which listed them all. It was all very open and clear that the vaccine, like all vaccines, can cause side effects.

Today I have a pretty sore achy arm and a headache, but nothing that painkillers can't sort.

Dh's colleague and wife had their Oxford vaccine on Monday. Both felt achy, tired and unwell. The man was ill enough not to be able to work. But by the evening he was feeling better and both are perfectly fine today.

Everyone else I know who have had the vaccine have had nothing worse than a sore arm. That's with both vaccines.

I actually read beforehand that the vaccines can cause unpleasant side effects short term so was able to manage my workload around it. I got everything that definitely had to be done out of the way before the vaccine, leaving today and tomorrow less of an issue. I have plenty to do, but all stuff that could have been delayed. As it is I'm fine to work, just have to rest my arm a bit very so often - luckily not my dominant arm.

It seems unfortunate that so many people within a limited number, in one work place, are all so badly effected. It may well be worth reporting as could be linked to one specific batch perhaps.

Abraxan · 25/02/2021 13:25

I've already still got fatigue, chest tightness, and other issues from having had covid 4 months ago so that could be masking those kind of side effects, though they've not got worse.

whataballbag · 25/02/2021 13:28

I had the AZ on Tuesday, spend all of yesterday in bed feeling rough. Sweats, splitting headache, weird shooting pains down both legs and that awful fluey crappy feeling you get in your face when you're ill. I felt soo soo poorly.

Don't think I've ever had covid (frequent testing) and I'm 29, have read that side effects tend to be harsher the younger you are.

Feeling brand new today

PollyDarton1 · 26/02/2021 07:39

QQ - I had Oxford AZ yesterday around 3:45pm.

Woken up feeling okay, maybe a slight temp or stuffiness. Arm isn't that sore, and have a training course to deliver.

In typical neurotic me type situation I'm panicking I'm going to be delivering this training course and suddenly plummet and feel like shite 😂 How long does it take for side effects to come out? Is it generally accepted if you wake up the next day feeling OK then you've escaped the worst of it?

vjg13 · 26/02/2021 07:51

My 17 yr old daughter had AZ yesterday, vey disturbed night's sleep and up at 6 with temp 38.5, has had 2 paracetamol and back to bed.

Choconuttolata · 26/02/2021 09:48

Had AZ yesterday afternoon, slight numb feeling in arm at points yesterday evening in region of jab, but no swelling. Felt warm overnight as kicked off the covers. Feel fine this morning. Much better than how I felt with Covid-19 a few months ago.

Grimbelina · 26/02/2021 09:54

Had AZ yesterday, slightly sore arm and possibly other mild issues (but I have another chronic illness so would be hard to differentiate what is that and what is the vaccine).

However, I did have the most extraordinary dreams (like nothing I have had). They were so vivid and weird that I can only think that that is a reaction.

DH, DM and Dsis (also all AZ) were in bed with chills and fever for 24 hours.

DenisetheMenace · 26/02/2021 09:55

My elderly parents had AZ, no ill-effects at all.

rosie39forever · 26/02/2021 10:00

I had AZ at 9am yesterday, slightly sore arm this morning but otherwise fine so far, DH had Pfizer a month ago and was really rough for a few days.

ArchwayRoad · 26/02/2021 20:24

I had AZ yesterday morning and have had zero side effects apart from a very slightly sore arm. I'm early 40s and have definitely not had Covid (I've had frequent tests).
