Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

I got my second appointment through booking my first online - they both are booked at the same time

I'm totally fine now after my vaccine on Friday and so happy to have had it Smile

JinglingHellsBells · 15/02/2021 18:23
@JinglingHellsBells sorry, should have tagged you so you would see my reply.

My MIL also has her second one booked in and she's in Herts. She received a letter and booked it on the phone but I'm not sure if her second one was booked then or when she went for her jab. There was no facility to do that when I went for mine you were just in and out really quickly.
Thanks @MacDuffsMuff
The people I know who have had it were called by phone by GPs and given an appt at a local centre, and they were just told they would be called again for the 2nd dose.

I know a few elderly people who had their first weeks ago, some were given a date then, but it was cancelled so more could have the first dose.

MacDuffsMuff · 15/02/2021 18:30

@JinglingHellsBells Perhaps the procedure has changed? I've just asked my sister (she's a nurse in a vaccination centre up north) and she said that they're eager to get 2nd appointments booked as people are more likely to attend when they already have it booked in. I'm quite shocked by the number of no shows they seem to have!

TheLaughingGenome · 15/02/2021 18:51

@JinglingHellsBells

Interested to know which parts of the UK those posters are in who have a date for 2nd dose.

Was the date through the NHS site or in person at time of jab?

No one I know has, either north, south, east or west! And regardless of age/ priority.

I booked mine online via the NHS covid vaccine booking website, and as pp said, you MUST book your 2nd jab at the same time as booking your first. It took place at a local pharmacy. The AZ vaccine.

A friend who had his first jab on the same day as mine, via our GP surgery, has no idea when his second jab will be. Also the AZ vaccine.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/02/2021 18:55

DH hasn't got a date for his second jab. The first was booked through a link on a text and there was no option to book a second appointment. He was told at the vaccination centre that he would be contacted to book the second one.

ImFree2doasiwant · 15/02/2021 19:01

My parents, in their 70s, had it with no side effects at all. A friend, aged 30, was really under the weather for 3 days

MadisonAvenue · 15/02/2021 19:08

I was told that I’d be called in 8-12 weeks to book my second one.

ImFree2doasiwant · 15/02/2021 19:17

@JinglingHellsBells my parents had their 1st last week, second due in April. Their letter had dates for both on it. Norfolk.

@cakegoblin If you had read the thread you would see that I am not medically trained and I am not NHS, I am another emergency service and I have not claimed to be medically minded AT ALL. I am simply asking if anyone else has had these reactions and it turns out a lot of people do.

I received my first vaccination today (I am Tier 4: Everyone aged 65+). I could have gone to one of the Dorset vaccination centres but the venue my GP practice is sharing with several other local practices is only a 15 minutes drive from us.

I received Astrazeneca and was advised that the second jab would be in 12 weeks' time and I would be contacted, again, directly by my GP practice to book the second appointment.

Had I accepted the NHS letter invitation, I would have been able to book online and book the first and second jab at the same time - but this is not the policy for my GP practice venue.

DH (who is 74, Tier 3 and had a mild stroke 5 years ago) had his first jab 9 days ago. On the day following the jab he felt chilly and very lethargic but not unwell enough to want to go to bed. By the third day he felt OK apart from some intermittent cognitive fogginess and a little unsteadiness, which resolved fully after a couple more days.

So, I shall see what tomorrow brings.

Redannie118 · 15/02/2021 19:55

Had mine on Sat. Im 48 but tier 4 due to rare autoimmune disease and previous cancer. I was rang directly by GP and had it at the vaccination centre at my GP surgery. Was told would be called for second dose.
Was ok on the day , next day incredibly sore arm, tired and so dizzy i could not stand up. Today my arm is the size of a tennis ball, rock hard and very painful, also red and lumpy. My 72 year old mum had no side effects at all!!

AgnesNaismith · 15/02/2021 21:49

Online - I have 2nd appointment booked in
119 - they booked DHs second appointment in when booking the first

It seems like it is just GPs who don’t book in the second appointment. Their deliveries are probably less possible to predict reliably.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 15/02/2021 21:50

I had mine on Saturday. I was texted on Friday by my GP and managed to get one Saturday. They said at the Scout Hut where I had it done that they were expecting to be closed but appointments then started coming through. I was told I will be sent a text again when it is time for my second appointment.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 15/02/2021 21:51

Oh and I have had mild flu symptoms, very achey and tired but it could also be a bit of half term itus as I am a teacher and often spend the first couple of days of any holiday feeing knackered!!!

Mykittensmittens · 15/02/2021 23:02

So....those who have had the side effects discussed....what’s the thought on the same thing happening at the second dose? Will it be the same? Or worse? Or less? Is there just not enough recipients yet to know?

I’d really love to understand the mechanism for the side effects to happen.

Just for the straw poll - DM (awful side effects for 48 hours) is 65, slim, healthy, etc. She’s adamant she’s not had Covid (no positive tests and no periods of ill health, so only if she was ever asymptomatic).

DGM is 87, very very frail (weighs about 6 stone), dementia, and a heart condition. She apparently had no side effects whatsoever.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 15/02/2021 23:11

We got the second vaccine booked whilst we were doing the 15 min wait after the jab.

As for jo shows, I booked a time online and then found out I could do an earlier one. Unfortunately I must of put a digit wrong in my phone number as I didn’t get a text cancel - but could make another appointment. I explained to the nurses when I got there that I had an appointment an hour later too. She said there were a couple of people who hadn’t been able to cancel online.

Personss · 16/02/2021 02:41

I cant believe some one has threatened to report this post, letting people know how common side effects are, is informative, I had mine this morning and I’m laid in bed 2.32 in the morning face burning feeling like I have a temperature, mouth and tongue feeling very slightly numb and achy joints, but it’s better than getting COVID, a friend of my wife lost all his family to it

starbody · 16/02/2021 03:32

OP thank you for sharing your experiences. I'm not sure when truth was relabeled as fear mongering, the govt has a massive vaccine damage payout scheme that would not exist unless others had suffered at the hands of receiving a vaccine. Whilst some of us here will know people in our lifetimes who have suffered health issues only apparent after a vaccine, many have also been fine. There is no way to tell how each person's body will react.
Have appreciated to read everyone's comments and opinions here. Flowers

Morph2lcfc · 16/02/2021 06:50

I am also in Leicestershire like the above poster and didn’t get a return apppointnent (I had at surgery), neither did my mum or dad (had at large vaccination centre ) so seems it’s not even consistent in an area

User2941 · 16/02/2021 08:49

I'm feeling almost back to normal, apart from 'tail end of a cold' feeling, which is reassuring as my reaction was in the more annoying end (brain fog, tachycardic). I think work stress and pmt played a part plus my adhd stimulant medication which is normally ok. Best advice is loads of sleep, don't try and battle on.

I would have found these threads helpful sooner as I thought I'd be not believed at work! To those poo-pooing it etc.- 1. most of the side effects do not exist with the Pfizer one and 2. wait until the general populatiom is vaccinated with AZ, discussing side effects will be all over MN/news!

Lovemusic33 · 16/02/2021 08:58

I had the vaccine yesterday and was up all night with stomach ache and feeling sick, not sure if it was caused by the vaccine or not as they are not typical symptoms. My arm aches a little but so far no flu symptoms.

TheLaughingGenome · 16/02/2021 09:04

There's a vaguely informative article in the Mail Online today, saying that 10% of people will have these side-effects, but nil desperandum, they are a sign one's immune system is bucking up 👍

Cookerhood · 16/02/2021 09:05

I had mine at the end of last week (AZ). Mild but persistent headache for a couple of days, warm (but no actual fever) & a feeling of being slightly under the weather. Tender injection site, as with the flu jab. I'm so pleased & grateful to have had it.
Booked through 119 with the second one booked at the same time.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 16/02/2021 09:05

I am on day three now. This has been my timetable.
Day one day of injection at 3.30pm arm started to ache within an hour but ok.
Day two woke up to whole body aches. I took paracetamol but it didn't really help much so I just pottered around. Worst thing was waking up at 3am with pains going down my legs.
Day three woke up again at 3 am. Still very achey but paracetamol is helping now. Weirdly quite emotional. Actually feel a bit sad and depressed. Snoozed most of the afternoon.
Day four woke up at normal time and actually felt a lot better. Still a bit achey and a very mild headache but I feel like me again.

I have been lucky because I am on half term so no worries about having time off work and I still have quiet days in front of
me.

Would still have it done again in a heart beat.
