Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

OP posts:
lynsey91 · 14/02/2021 18:04
@lynsey91 that’s great that you are not having noticeable side effects. If you don’t mind could you share your age? It’s that there seems to be a view that the younger have a stronger response to someone in their 50s for example.
I’m 39 well will be 40 soon so knot sure where I’ll sit on the age/side effects scale
I am 66.

MadisonAvenue · 14/02/2021 18:26

I’m 51 and had a strong reaction. My 20 year old son reacted but not as badly as me.

VaccsyPoxsy · 14/02/2021 18:38

I honestly don’t know why I feel so scared/anxious around this vaccine- maybe the stressful year is a contributing factor. Never had any issues in getting vaccines before..

Pinkchocolate · 14/02/2021 19:25

I had mine this morning and am pleased to say that so far, absolutely no side effects apart from a slightly heavy head. @VaccsyPoxsy I know exactly what you mean, I’ve never been scared of vaccinations before but this one worried me. I think it is just the stress of the last twelve months.

Parpie · 14/02/2021 21:28

I had the vaccine yesterday. Apart from sleeping in this morning, I’ve had zero side effects.

kerstina · 14/02/2021 22:22

OP thank you for starting this thread .It has reassured me that I am not alone in feeling awful with flu like symptoms . Freezing cold , muscle aches , headache . I don't usually get any side effects with the flu jab so it was a bit of a shock to feel so ill . Have spent most of today in bed . I had vaccine yesterday so hope I will be ok by tomorrow.

PutsFootInIt · 14/02/2021 22:42

Like the above poster, I came to this thread because I had the oxford vaccine today and had a temp of

FluffySocks75 · 14/02/2021 22:58

Hahahahaha at some of the comments.

I had literally no idea these side effects were even an option. I thought mildly achy arm like flu jab. Poss a bit tired.

I didnt googled anything prior. Was just so happy to have got it.

My reaction happed fairly quickly after and I assumed that was the worst. Went to bed. Woke up after an hour violently shivering with a temp of nearly 40.

Fuck right off with the patronising insinuation that's psychosomatic.

It's literally listed in the possible side effects as VERY COMMON AND COMMON from trials.

If covid has taught us anything has it not taught us that peoples bodies react completely differently to the same thing based on a variety of factors? Eg 2 people could get covid same day one have mild cold like symptoms the other icu on a vent. Stop bloody gas lighting people for not being positive. I'm very positive about the vaccine I have no fear and am delighted to have had it. I also experienced full on side effects. That are filling incline with the info which I assume is based on trial data.

Unless we are going to tell people with covid they should all just be positive and shame those who have bad covid symptoms for not being positive enough? Just send clowns into ICU free up the drs.

Honest to goodness.

Flossie44 · 14/02/2021 23:16

Psychosomatic?! Wtf!!!!! How is it that a thermometer reads 38-40??!!

I’ve been so so positive about this vaccine. Couldn’t wait to get it. Cried with relief when the needle went in. Found it really emotional. I’m never ill, very healthy, eat well and exercise daily.

But yes, the last 48 hours I have felt truly awful!! Every part of me has hurt, I’ve had a temp of 38, my skin has hurt and I’ve had muscle cramps and nausea !! It’s been crap but I’d do it all again to avoid Hospitalisation or death from Covid!!

Nith · 14/02/2021 23:36

Has anyone else found the problem with the sore arm gets slightly worse over time? I had AZ three days ago, the only problem have been a sore arm and a bit of tiredness, but my arm seems to be more sore than it was. It's nothing dramatic, it doesn't look bruised, it feels a little swollen and hard around that area, so I'm not worried about it. Just wondered whether it is the norm.

Notnastypasty · 14/02/2021 23:41

A few friends of mine were very ill after the AZ vaccine so I was a bit worried. I had mine 8 days ago and had a headache and sore arm. Arm still sore, had a big rash and the site was very hot. Rang doctor to check this was normal and told it’s a side effect. Rash has gone now but that area of my arm has a hard lump under the skin still.

FluffySocks75 · 15/02/2021 00:20

Yes as my other symptoms subside my arms getting worse. I had mine thur lunchtime. Right now I have a headache but my arm pain is worse than my head. And arm is rock hard, swollen and hot to touch and red/bruised looking. It's quite a musing because it looks like I have a huge muscle.

Never had that from a flu jab most I've had from that is a bit tender to touch. So @Nith I would say yes it getting worse is normal - well for me anyway.

fionaclareelizabeth · 15/02/2021 12:52

I had the Oxford vaccine yesterday and was up all night with high temperature, shaking, and headache. Feel dreadful.

FluffySocks75 · 15/02/2021 13:02

@fionaclareelizabeth hope it doesn't last too long for you. If it's any help the worst of that for me lasted 12 hours once it started and then 48 for temp to go back to mostly normal. Hang in there. Flowers

AliceSprings123 · 15/02/2021 13:06

I'm 60, shielding, and the nurses came on Sat. morning to give me mine. By lunchtime I felt so cold my teeth were chattering. Went to bed, horrendous headache and nausea. And so it continued. Wasn't fun. Just got up.Arm's still tender but that's OK. Haven't eaten since Friday. That's OK too, really not hungry.
Question - my follow up jab is booked for 1st May. Might I expect more of the same?
Thanks for starting the thread, OP.

fionaclareelizabeth · 15/02/2021 13:07

Thanks!! I feel a bit more reassured now having seen that it's a common reaction.

MacDuffsMuff · 15/02/2021 13:19

I really wish I'd seen this thread before I had my AZ jab. I had mine a week and a half ago and felt so awful during the night that I was convinced that I actually had CoVID and there had been a crossover. If I'd seen this it would have been so reassuring. I was fine within 48 hours apart from a bit of a sore arm which is also fine now.

Second booked in for April so will know what to expect now and won't worry.

No one I know of any age in any of the groups 1-4 and now the 65+ have had a date for the 2nd dose.

Can you explain how you have?

JinglingHellsBells · 15/02/2021 16:56

Interested to know which parts of the UK those posters are in who have a date for 2nd dose.

Was the date through the NHS site or in person at time of jab?

No one I know has, either north, south, east or west! And regardless of age/ priority.

MacDuffsMuff · 15/02/2021 17:21

I'm in Bedfordshire. Booked it online and you couldn't book your first one without booking the second one at the same time. I assumed it was the same everywhere but obviously not!

likeamillpond · 15/02/2021 17:23

@cakegoblin

I’m worried given how unprofessional the supposedly medically trained OP sounds that this is a fake news thread so I’m going to report.
Don't be ridiculous. The op is merely stating facts. A lot of people ARE getting flu like reactions, especially with the AZ vaccine. My husband had his on Friday and he's spent most if the weekend in bed with headache, and lack of strength. He says his bones ache! I'm sure it will be worth it. But we don't live in a police state. Yet. People are allowed to say that the vaccine is making them feel shit. It doesn't mean to say they're not grateful. Just saying it how it is.
MacDuffsMuff · 15/02/2021 17:24

@JinglingHellsBells sorry, should have tagged you so you would see my reply.

My MIL also has her second one booked in and she's in Herts. She received a letter and booked it on the phone but I'm not sure if her second one was booked then or when she went for her jab. There was no facility to do that when I went for mine you were just in and out really quickly.

MacDuffsMuff · 15/02/2021 17:25

@cakegoblin Why would you report this why would you think it's fake news?

I booked my in-laws in for their vaccines a couple of weeks ago though the local hospital trust as they hadn’t been invited through their GP yet (they are over 75). Their second vaccination appointment was generated when the first was booked, for the same day of the week and time eleven weeks later. They had the Pfizer vaccination as that was what was offered at their closest site but the same booking system was in place for all locations (all other sites were offering the AstraZeneca vaccine). We are in Leicestershire.

I had the AstraZeneca vaccination myself, and only had very mild symptoms (a little tired and slightly sore arm). I am in my 40s and have previously had COVID. Of the people I know who have had the vaccine, some have felt poorly with temperatures for a day or two, others not. A complete mixture. Personally I had a worse sore arm from the flu jab than from the COVID one.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 15/02/2021 17:50

I have my first one tomorrow booked today, they automatically booked my second one for 4th May at the same time, I’m in East Midlands category 4
