Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

LeSquigh · 19/01/2021 06:44

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

@makingmiracles
Sounds dreadful

60schild · 08/02/2021 14:29
@minchinfin I don't think any of us are complaining, just saying what we experienced
It was helpful for me to know not to have it done before a work day
Exactly this. I'm delighted to have had the vaccine but it could've meant I lost a day working with my clients (NHS). Now I know how severely I reacted to it I will book the next one for a Friday - then I can be ill in my 'own time'. I reckon they're the actions of a dedicated caring employee rather than a complaining malingerer as some on this thread seem to imply.

QueenPawPaws · 08/02/2021 14:42

@60schild I booked mine for a Saturday am so I could be fine for Monday at work. Done the same for the second jab
It's the same as I do with my weekly injections, inject on a Friday night and spend the weekend unwell so I'm fine for work great(!)

PusheenLove · 08/02/2021 15:18
@minchinfin I've not had covid to the best of my knowledge and had a severe reaction.I've been shielded for most of this last year. Nice attitude you have there.
Ditto.

Some goady folk here Hmm I say this lying in bed after having the vaccine yesterday. I feel sick as a dog.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 08/02/2021 15:32

@PusheenLove I was feeling slightly better, very slightly 24 hours after having the vaccine, then by bedtime last night I was able to eat some toast as had stopped vomiting and all the pains had eased off. I am shattered today and lying on the sofa now after home schooling ds, My throat is sore (probably from the vomiting) and I still have a headache but it's nothing really. At least painkillers are working today. Yesterday I had regular paracetamol, dihydrocodeine, ibuprofen gel on my hips and knees, tramadol and a hot water bottle and the pain was almost unbearable. Labour at home with just gas and air was easier. So hang on in there, it will soon pass.

PusheenLove · 08/02/2021 15:35

@Ozzie9523

Very strange, my elderly parents both had the Oxford vaccine on Friday and have had no side effects whatsoever thankfully
What's strange about 1 in 10 experiencing these side effects? Your parents were the 9/10

Thank you.

I had the vaccine at 4pm yesterday. Side effects kicked in at midnight.

I'm sure DH thinks I'm taking the piss Hmm I'm praying when it's his turn he feels the full force of the side effects. Also to the dismissers/naysayers on this thread.

Angry
QueenPawPaws · 08/02/2021 15:41

@PusheenLove mine didn't last long
Vaccine at 10.30am, headache from midnight and unwell until the morning. Felt better but tired and sore arm the next day
I did take paracetamol all day from straight after the vaccine!

Runnerduck34 · 08/02/2021 17:03

I think this thread is really informative, the only person i know who has be vaccinated so far is my mum and she had the pfizer and didnt have side effects, I heard of a friend of a friend who had extremely bad side effects but I thought it was very unusual.
I am.50 this year so will hopefully eventually get the vaccine and its still worth having but I think it's useful to know you might be ill for a few days afterwards so you can plan and arent alarmed if it happens. Tbh i thought side effects would be mild I wasn't expecting so many to feel really ill afterwards but I'll still have the vaccine

MadisonAvenue · 08/02/2021 17:03

PusheenLove I’ve been wishing the same on my husband today Hmm

garlictwist · 08/02/2021 17:33

This thread Is terrifying. It really puts me off having it (I will, whenever my turn comes, however). I have such a fear of vomiting and this has made me really scared of that happening.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 08/02/2021 17:39

@garlictwist ask your GP for anti sickness medication just in case. I've emailed mine to ask for it. It seems to be quite rare to actually vomit so I was unlucky. I have a GP appointment to discuss it so I'll be interested to see what the doctor says. I'm feeling very tired and a little queasy and off now. I've eaten dinner and enjoyed it but maybe it was too much on my stomach. Now that I know the bad effects are short lived I feel better about getting the second dose. If I hadn't been sick I'd have been able to eat and drink and probably not felt so ill. Don't worry, your GP should be able to help with anti sickness meds if you have emetophobia. And book the next day or two off work.

QueenPawPaws · 08/02/2021 17:42

@garlictwist I am also phobic and no nausea at all. Definitely agree with asking chemist or GP, you will feel better if you have some medication on hand

ginandbearit · 08/02/2021 17:43

Over a week now ...reported initial side effects on here a few pages back ..knocked out for best part of two days ..now pretty much ok but have had a few episodes of crashing exhaustion but that may still be long term effects of covid from very early 2020 .

Whodofthunk · 08/02/2021 17:49

I know 6 people who have had AZ. 3 complained of 'a heavy arm' for a day but nothing more.

pourmeanotherglass · 08/02/2021 17:51

Quite a few of my team had mild reactions - sore arm, headache, tiredness, feeling a bit washed out.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 08/02/2021 18:04

NB. Sorry, just to clarify as I've reread the leaflet I was given and vomiting is classed as "common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people).

My arm was a little sore but nothing really, I could still lie on that side and it's fine today.

Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects
PusheenLove · 08/02/2021 20:45

I'm 28 hours post vaccine and seem to be getting a second surge of crap. Shivering under a duvet with a hot water bottle. Whole body aches. Headache pounding.

LeSquigh · 09/02/2021 01:39

@minchinfin I haven’t seen anyone complaining. I think everyone here who has had side effects is still happy that they have had it.

And you do not necessarily get bad effects if you have had COVID. I had COVID a month before I had the vaccine (the earliest I could have it) and I didn’t get side effects anywhere near as bad as some of my colleagues. I did only have mild COVID symptoms when I had it though.

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 09/02/2021 07:27

I had the jab yesterday at 3.30pm and Iv woken up with a huge headache, feeling generally crap and a really sore arm 😩😭

YanTanTethera123 · 09/02/2021 07:54

71yr old DH had his, absolutely no side effects.
95 year old DM no side effects either.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 09/02/2021 10:17

I'm really tired today and still feeling queasy but I don't mind that really. Rest and early nights will do the trick and I know my body is responding well to the vaccine so now the worst is over I'm able to concentrate on the positives. I've also got my second period in two weeks and I have endometriosis and often feel rotten so that will be impacting on how I feel too.
I have bee terrified of getting covid so despite how ill I was on Sunday I'm glad I had the vaccine.

Twixmas · 09/02/2021 10:20

My dad had heavy shakes and shivers but they passed within 24 hours. He was sort of pleased, like his immune system was being given a kick-start. He's fine now, never better.

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 09/02/2021 10:42

Corr I feel rough and achey :(

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 09/02/2021 10:50

I have a sore arm and headache, general fatigue. It's absolutely nothing compared to covid, which I also had last spring.
