Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

Has anyone else had kidney pain for 2-3 days post vaccine? I have reported it on the yellow card website. Myself and a few colleagues have had the kidney pain but seem to be the odd 2 out that have only had it. I had the sore arm and spiked a fever of 39.0 for about 10 hours that went then the kidney pain started.

My mid-seventies mother had the AZ vaccine and was completely bedridden for a day. We were panicking! She has dementia so cannot be certain about everything she felt but she had a raging temperature, no appetite, pains in her legs and basically slept for 24 hours. She was much recovered after that.

Watching with interest

lewes2 · 31/01/2021 22:11

I had it yesterday pm. Been in bed all day feeling dreadful, shivers (temp of 33) achy, sick, like I remember flu as a child. I’m 52. Would have it again obviously but as previous posters have said, it’s good to know what to expect so you’re prepared. Hope to god I feel better tomorrow

nevertakeabreak · 31/01/2021 22:32

Elderly Parents had Oxford one. No side effects

PQWQ · 01/02/2021 00:19

Very tired after mine. Slept for 16 hours. Sore arm and headache.

No big deal as I didn't actually feel unwell.

78 Yr old mum - no side effects at all.

Newstaronhorizon · 01/02/2021 00:30

Had mine, headache cured by going for a jog!

So glad I have had it

Sympathies lewes2!! So sorry you are unwell.
It’s now 2 days and 12 hours after my jab and I feel normal again after shivers, fever, headache and aches. Hopefully it will be quicker or at least the same for you xxx

Skyla2005 · 02/02/2021 10:50

The side effects have definitely been played Down. I wasn't expecting the severity of the effects. Had the Oxford vaccine at 1pm Sunday and by 9pm had the chills but my fever was raging all night sweating head ache pains in arms and legs and so so hot. Had to take a day off sick. 2 days later still do t feel well clammy and nauseous I wish I had known what I was in for

Berlioz23 · 02/02/2021 10:58

I had mine 2 weeks ago on the Saturday, felt hot and headachey all day on Sunday but well enough to carry on with normal activities especially with ibuprofen and paracetamol. I was fine the day after except for an hour before bed where I got really hot then took paracetamol and it went. I was glad I had the day off on Sunday but could have worked if I had to. I’ve still got a sore spot on my arm though after having a site reaction. I’m 26 and a healthcare worker

Sparkletastic · 02/02/2021 11:01

I had the AZ vaccine 2 weeks ago. Absolutely fine aside from a sore arm. About 1 in 10 colleagues had a headache or temperature but nothing that rest and paracetamol didn't sort very quickly. I'm NHS. I suspect a certain amount of exaggeration is going on in your workplace or inaccurate sickness reporting.

OppsUpsSide · 02/02/2021 11:22

I’m suprised that people are suprised that vaccines cause side effects.

truthisalie · 02/02/2021 11:32

OppsUpsSide

I’m suprised that people are suprised that vaccines cause side effects.

Of course they cause. For now, we only see side effects which have happened straight after having the vaccines but because these vaccines are rushed we cannot know which impact they are going to have in a few months or years as this is also very possible.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/02/2021 11:41

Had it yesterday evening. No problems today at all.

DoctorYang · 02/02/2021 13:00

My sister in her 30s had a rough couple of days after the vaccine. My SIL was in bed for 2 days after hers (she is mid 50s). My grandmother in her 80s had no side effects. My other grandmother, also in her 80s, has been in bed for 3 days. My boss had a numb arm and nothing else.

I get mine today and I am glad of all this information, thank you for this thread OP.

Sharww · 02/02/2021 13:04

Had mine a few days ago, can honestly say i haven’t been that poorly since the flu over a decade ago. I’d have been terrified if my DH wasn’t around, felt more like an allergic reaction than a normal response. Absolutely horrible, I couldn’t physically walk.

Skyppy · 02/02/2021 13:10

I believe there is some evidence that younger people with a stronger immune system have more of a reaction.
I am 62 with auto immune disease. I had my AZ vax on Saturday and had nothing more than a sore arm (though my normal status is achey and painful). My DS a healthy 22 year old had his yesterday and woke up at 3am with the shivers and aches.

I hope it's not a measure of effectiveness, I think I would feel happier if I had had a reaction!

Also younger fit people have less experience of managing pain and illness so might be slightly more dramatic about it?

Gottaloveacardie · 02/02/2021 13:21

I know 4 relatives in their 70s who have had it. All felt unwell for 48-72 hours with temperature, aches, shivers or exhaustion. All fine after. Side effects do seem much more common and more severe than with flu jab.

QueenPawPaws · 02/02/2021 14:47

I've deliberately booked mine for a Saturday morning so 48hrs before work
Not sure which vaccine it will be but figured best to expect to feel a bit shit and a bonus if I don't

defnotadomesticgoddess · 02/02/2021 15:30

Of the people I know that have had the Oxford jab the younger ones (20-50ish) have had side effects but those over 70 no side effects at all.

Parpie · 03/02/2021 10:47

I have friends you’ve had the Oxford vaccine and all but one have had severe side effects. One who is a nurse said that 22 of his colleagues (hospital staff) have had to take time off sick because of them.

defnotadomesticgoddess · 03/02/2021 12:08

My mum age 76 had it yesterday morning (I was waiting to see how she was before commenting). Felt a bit rubbish early evening but apart from that is fine.

LeSquigh · 04/02/2021 03:24

Thank you to those of you that have continued to report your side effects on this thread and well done to all those who have had the vaccine so far, I hope everyone else gets their turn quickly. Whilst I obviously wouldn’t wish ill on anyone it is reassuring to see that my colleagues are not the only ones who have had these issues to give some sort of confirmation that I wasn’t making it up/that it wasn’t exaggerated and that all my colleagues were taking the piss as some thought.

I’m into day two after Oxford AZ vaccine part one, last night was terrible my teeth chattered so badly I was scared I would break my teeth. I had to layer three duvets on my bed. I have slept all day and was not fit to do anything else so had to call in sick to work. Even going to get a drink from the kitchen seemed a monstrous task. This evening I still have headache, nausea am off my food etc, feeling a bit anxious about tonight and whether I will get the chills again. I’ve never known anything like it but still don’t regret having had the vaccine. Thankyou scientists.
