Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the side effects

Morning all

Many of my colleagues have now received the first dose of the Oxford vaccine and every single one of them has reported side effects, quite a large number have had to take time off work and been bedridden. Are we in the minority or is this true for all that have it? Not really looking forward to my turn!

I had mine yesterday at 2.30. Felt absolutely fine all yesterday, bit tired this morning, WFH til 1.30 then was absolutely floored by tiredness, then the chills started.
Took the afternoon off (I never do this!) and slept for 3 hours. Still feel a bit rubbish, but no sore arm.

So glad to have had it though. Huge relief as a frontline nurse manager.
I'm looking at it as a great immune response, also it means I'm young 👍

@ilikepeanutbutter

Hi, firstly very blessed to have had the jab on Friday and would again. Was not prepared for the side effects. Saturday was unable to get up, couldn't look after the kids, it's now Monday, still rough. Actually considering a covid test. Three nights of sweaty /chills, heart palpatations, saturday extreme fatigue, aches and shivers. I have had painkillers over the weekend. I am 37, I read its worse in younger people. I've never had covid knowingly but maybe I have?? given the side effects are said to be worse in people who have had covid??? My dad had Pfizer with no side effects. My mum had astrazeneca and was out of action for one day, fine after.
There's no reason for you not to have the test. If you do test +ve by PCR or have a diagnosis of COVID–19 then please make sure your GP notifies it to Public Health England who are interested in any such results whatever people have been vaccinated with and after either 1 or 2 jabs.

The following cases should be reported:

Individuals with a SARS-CoV-2 PCR positive sample with symptom onset date at least 10 days after their first dose of vaccine (this includes any cases who develop symptoms after a second dose of vaccine).

If the case was asymptomatic, test date should be used in place of symptom onset date.

Vaccinated individuals who test positive using a lateral flow device should be confirmed using PCR.

Had Oxford-AstraZeneca on Monday morning around 9.30am. I am a worker in CS and visit weekly to the people I support so our whole team was offered a vaccine. I'm really interested to hear how the younger you are, the side effects could have an effect more. I'm going to do my own research into that, purely because I'm intrigued to read it..I'm in no way academic Haha. Hated uni assignments with a passion.

I was only handed the side effects sheet minutes before my actual vaccine and in hindsight, I should have looked up side effects of both vaccines before I went.

Felt fine until around 2.30pm on Monday, whilst on a visit where I felt unbelievably tired, had several moments of brain fog to the amusement of the family I was visiting, went to bed around 7.30pm (unusual for me) feeling extremely cold although was hot to touch and then woke up around 3am, sweating.

Yesterday, had a headache and tired again aswell as a sore arm. I have took paracetamol throughout & kept drinking water and now feel fine. I also worked both days.

Glad I had the vaccine though, as want to be protected, due to having mild asthma and a family at home to look after too.

I'm glad to hear you haven't had many side effects OP and thank you for the post, it has been interesting to read through whilst I can't sleep (not a side effect, normal to wake up this early unfortunately).

Justpassingtime1 · 27/01/2021 06:05

Which leaflet ? Did not get one BUT none of us had anything more
than sore arms.
Is it the way the jab is administered?

kurtrussellsbeard · 27/01/2021 06:13

Didn't read the full thread but

  1. How do you know the ins and outs of 100 people at your work's health?
  2. How can you work in a healthcare environment and not know about the yellow card scheme?

I have only had one vaccine in the last decade - the Flu vaccine - it made me feel awful for 24 hours.

I think this is normal with vaccines TBH

LeSquigh · 27/01/2021 06:25

@kurtrussellsbeard because as already explained, we work close to a big vaccination centre and emergency services are being called in at the end of every day to use up leftover vaccine. Some days there are only a couple available and some days there is more. There have been a fair amount more vaccinated since I started this post.

I know the ins and outs of colleagues side effects because 1. We are a very close team, as is usual in emergency services, 2. Sickness reporting is currently split 3 ways - non COVID - COVID - vaccine related and I and my direct colleagues are speaking to lots of the people involved due to the nature of our role and they are reporting information from their respective teams.

I always have to have the hepatitis vaccine on a Friday because it always puts me in bed for 48 hours with all the symptoms people are describing here. I don't react to the flu or any other vaccine, so will be interesting to see what, if anything, the Covid vaccine does to me. Am likely to get mine around mid-March apparently.

LeSquigh · 27/01/2021 06:27

@kurtrussellsbeard 🤣 I’ve just seen your update. Sorry if you think it’s “dodgy”. As you will see there are lots more people reporting flooring side effects on this thread, not just me. If you don’t want to believe it, don’t! Plenty of us can attest to it being factual. Hopefully you won’t suffer too badly when you get yours.

TibetanTerrier · 27/01/2021 06:33

Sorry, I meant the typhoid vaccine, not hepatitis.

felineflutter · 27/01/2021 08:06

Yes I've had a similar reaction. Had the vaccine at 9am by 10pm I have had chills, fever sore arm, aches and pains and a headache.

I am now in bed drinking hot milk and honey Hmm Luckily I am not back in work until the weekend.

I would definitely have the vaccine but this is the worse I have felt through the whole pandemic and I am a frontline worker.

MrsHookey · 31/01/2021 05:53

I am glad to see this thread. I have felt mildly unwell and am glad to see it's normal.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 31/01/2021 07:47

Parents had the Oxford one. Dad had shivers and a headache for 36 hours. Mum has had nothing at all.

Benny11Letters · 31/01/2021 09:32

I read the pamphlet about side effects and was prepared going in yesterday morning for the Oxford vaccine. Still, sometimes medical literature says "mild" when to the layperson it feels like "Im gonna die". Glad to see my reaction isn't necessarily out of line with other experiences. I am 43, suspect I may have had covid just after Christmas, but tested negative.

Currently washing sheets and pillowcases after sweating out a fever last night, on top of the chills, body aches and one of the worst headaches I have ever had. It sucks but what is the alternative? I usually get fatigue and sore arm from flu vac -- this was next level, though I knew it likely wouldn't last longer than 36 hours. Drink the water, take the ibuprofen/paracetemol and hang on. Just glad today is Sunday and I can take it easy around the house. A bit concerned for the second shot though!

ilikepeanutbutter · 31/01/2021 10:24

Hopefully second shot will be milder???

BeyondAZParanoia · 31/01/2021 11:24

Just reading the thread now, but I have a thread with my side effects on

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4151287-Concerned-I-am-having-an-adverse-reaction-to-my-vaccine

Floralruthue · 31/01/2021 11:46

Had AstraZeneca jab Friday at 5pm. Woke at midnight with teeth chattering and chills. I threw up, very bad headache began then high temperature, sweating and swollen throat and lips. Yesterday I slept and took both paracetamol and ibuprofen to keep my temperature down. Today I’m a bit weak but smiley again and glad that hopefully I now have begun to build a little immunity. I wish I had read this thread before my jab so I knew what to expect. My husband rang 111 when I was at my worst and the doctor who called back said that lots of people are experiencing exactly my symptoms. She gave very good advice re: painkillers to use and how to get my temperature down. I have let my social care colleagues know so that they may be prepared but , of course, I am sincerely hoping that no one else at my workplace has any side effects at all. I am a bit worried about our service users having uncomfortable side effects when it is their turn to be vaccinated. Forewarned is fore armed as we can make plans such as having more staff on duty to deal with sickness and provide reassurance. Our lovely adult service users have had to cope with so much this year, in particular not being able to see their families. It is essential that we minimise any additional distress. Thank you OP for starting this useful conversation x

Yohoheaveho · 31/01/2021 11:50

It's hard not to be alarmed at these side effects!

SilverOtter · 31/01/2021 12:36

I had it, and have had no side effects apart from a slightly sore arm the day after that only lasted a few hoursSmile

BeyondAZParanoia · 31/01/2021 12:42

I have numbness, pins and needles and nerve pain btw. Not the usual, expected side effects

CanHearTheTune · 31/01/2021 12:53

I had the AZ last week. Sore arm and mild headache that paracetamol delt with.

I am CEV with a very low immune system.

ginandbearit · 31/01/2021 13:11
