This is another good map (from the FT today I think). My mum is in Suffolk which seems to have been very slow to get going, as represented on the map, but she now has an appointment for this coming Saturday Smile

@FuzzyPuffling

Absolutely truely. I'm sure every large house here is either owned by Londoners or is a care home!
Probably right

Though my sister has a holiday home (sorry) their and is from Wiltshire Grin

It is bad out there tonight isn't itSad

De-lurking to agree, very bad out on the main board tonight. I really appreciate this quiet, sane, Marzipan-the-pony loving, corner of the internet

My 75yr old grandparents been asked in this Saturday Smile

Thanks for the graph clarexp - would be so amazing if it really can change things for us all.

1990s · 21/01/2021 23:25

If only they could shove some of those good numbers over from Herefordshire into Shropshire... woefully behind most other places... I guess my good news is the council seems to be pushing for better progress Smile

Did anyone post this earlier?

It's in The Times as well but behind a paywall.

Glenorma · 22/01/2021 01:52

this is very good news if it happens
No it’s extremely bad news! Do they not realise that if they pay £500 for a positive test some people will purposely try to catch Covid? More people will get sick and more people will be taking silly risks trying to get infected. Not to mention that the demand for tests will go sky high because people with a slight headache will hope they’ve hit the jackpot and book a test.

starfish88 · 22/01/2021 03:35

I do find this a wonderful patch of sanity after reading 'what if vaccines don't work?' Not sure if this was specifically covid or all vaccines but it actually made me think how lucky we are not to have to worry about polio etc. I don't know anyone my age who has had polio but my parents remember children in school with polio injuries. And now DS has been caught up on his baby vaccinations I don't need to worry about it for him either. Or any of the other horrible illnesses we had to face in the past. Some of this 'vaccines don't work' sentiment must be really offensive to scientists who have done an amazing job of saving lives!

Hmm, I can see why you'd worry that that might happen. I hope not. I hope not that many would indulge in such risky behaviour.

@thatgingergirl

TJ17 - does this cover what you want? coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/vaccinations If you hover over the top of the "blocks" on the graph (don't know the proper word!) it shows the daily number.
Thank you @thatgingergirl ThanksSmile

Morning all! I had a great night then woke this morning to messages from DH (currently sleeping in the spare room) saying he had been up with one or other child most of the night Blush At least he let me sleep.

I’ve been sucked in by the vaccines not working posters even though I’m a scientist who works in pharma. So the effect on someone with no knowledge of this must be awful. So irresponsible and I actually feel MNHQ should try to shut them down - it’s not in the interests of free speech.

cardswapping · 22/01/2021 07:24

Hi, I have posted on threads that locked onto the Israel 1st jab data update. I think they were grossly misinterpreted tbh as it is normal for % antibodies to build gradually over time. It is normal for health authorities to worry about people mixing too soon after jab No1 but it does not follow that the vaccine is ineffective.

Also, more positive news on Israel experience post 2nd jab.
Link to Times of Israel (not sure which political side it is, but the news is in other papers too):
Israeli hospital: 98% of staff who got 2nd shot have high-level COVID antibodies

OrangeBananaFish · 22/01/2021 07:30

Morning, just marking my place as this dropped off TIO.

10 weeks today is good Friday and 5 weeks on Monday is March 1st. Wonder where we'll be with vaccines etc by these dates.

I think you’d have to be careful too.

Plus once paid there’s nothing to stop people meeting up with others anyway.

Mindymomo · 22/01/2021 07:59

I had a dream last night that I was queuing for my vaccination. They say if you have the same dream 3 times, it becomes true, so here’s hoping. I did have a glass or 2 of wine last night, so may do the same tonight.

PS I’m happy to wait my turn.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/01/2021 08:03

Seems sensible, you have to lock that dream in.

Blerg · 22/01/2021 08:13

Talking of polio I remember an article about the last people in the US who needed iron lungs. There were two or three of them and they and their families had taken on running and servicing the machines which were old because the expertise in doing it had died out basically. Their stories were very sad, though many had lived long full lives.

That, more than anything, made me really appreciate vaccinations. People have lost that context - of how worried people were about their children catching polio and the utter relief when a vaccine was found. I think this might be part of why the older generation have a high uptake.

I get that, there would surely need to be mitigations for exactly that. But it would enormously encourage testing among those who otherwise might not bother.
Blerg · 22/01/2021 08:16

Sorry not sure if that counts as positive. I guess I just find the science behind it amazing and the speed for these vaccines is incredible.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/01/2021 08:40

It's positive enough for me Blerg Smile

FuzzyPuffling · 22/01/2021 08:51

I'm old enough to remember polio being a thing ( although I was vaccinated...my sister, 2 years older than me got a sugar lump with the drug on it, I had a jab, so they must have still been testing to some extent) and my eyesight was permanently damaged by measles, aged 3.

I am very very very pro vaccines. I wish some of the younger people who were never in this position could see the fear of what are now "ordinary" childhood diseases. Negotiating childhood used to be an absolute lottery...now, no one really has to think about it.

And all because of wonderful vaccines and fabulous scientists.
