My local council...... is this slightly OTT?

www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/19016790.people-will-die---bcp-puts-strong-covid-message/

Just to make it clear, I am absolutely in favour of doing everything possible to reduce and manage the spread of Covid, but given that almost every other person I know is suffering huge mental stress due to the current lockdown, and even though I am fairly resilient I'm also feeling the strain, I'm quite nonplussed by the campaign in our area. And judging by the reader vote people are in favour of it.

Surely by now the majority of people are all too well aware of the seriousness of the situation, and the vaccine is supposed to be the light at the end of the tunnel?

I guess I'm more in favour of carrots than sticks, but maybe I'm in the minority. This just feels a little hysterical.....

After watching the local news (I live in Dorset) it seems we are one of the few areas where cases are still rising, a number of police officers have come down with covid, one of them was spat at and believes he was infected this way. I can see why the council is panicking and they want to shock people into staying indoors but it is a bit of a harsh message. I think what they are trying to say is “think before you leave the house, if you really don’t need to go out then don’t” which is what we should all be thinking?

Up until now numbers in Dorset have been really low, I have felt pretty safe going out, doing my shopping and working but at the moment I don’t feel safe, I keep hearing of people who are unwell, people my age who are in hospital and it worries me.

I'm in the same LA. It was massively OTT but at the same time our rates are still rapidly increasing. We have got off so light so no one is taking it seriously

RedskyBynight · 16/01/2021 19:23

@MistressoftheDarkSide

Yes people are dying, and every death is a tragedy, but they are not dying if people leave their house and are abiding by the rules, which over 90% are according to the government. Do the 10% of rule breakers correlate meaningfully with case increases? Or are more people than that getting the virus? Are those studies being done?
Just following the rules won't stop you dying. Many infections are spread by people going to work, or doing perfectly legal things. Just because you "can" do something doesn't mean you "should". IME people should think before they do something. Of course buying food is essential, but going to the supermarket every couple of days and taking your whole family and popping into a couple of other shops while you are there to have a browse, whilst perfectly legal, is not necessary and might be the conduit of infection spreading.

@MistressoftheDarkSide

But why are numbers here rising so quickly? Now I mean? When we're talking two weeks of tight restrictions limiting the options for contact?
Look at what happened on IOW.

They were tier 1.

I think it's a very good example of just how contagious this strain is. And how quickly it gets out of control.

And so it shows that when places were below tier 4 how the contact allowed caused a serious spike.

But the lockdown is working because those of us in tier 4 on Boxing Day are starting to see a decline now.

OrangeSamphire · 17/01/2021 09:32

Horrendous. As a child I remember being terrified when the tombstone leaflets arrived through our door about AIDS.

This is similar and I really hope my daughter doesn’t see this. Her mental health is extremely fragile, she’s autistic and narrowly escaped a tier 4 admission in the last lockdown after becoming suicidal. This sort of thing is a risk to her.

dottiedodah · 17/01/2021 09:49

Hi there ,fellow Bournemouth resident as well . I think these are OTT .In the last lockdown a fellow dog walker returned to his car to find a note telling him not to park there again .A whole mile and a half from home! Elderly chap so unable to walk too far . It is worrying that rates here are once again increasing .I think they are worried about the beach being overcrowded ,and in some places difficult to SD due to lack of space as well .Also Hengistbury Head (A local beauty spot ) has the highest rates in our area .

herecomesthsun · 17/01/2021 10:33

I remember there were all the pictures of people on Bournemouth beach in the summer. But it seemed that most of those people weren't locals (and local rates were fairly low, weren't they).

Are a lot of local people walking on the beach now?

And are death figures rising at all?

Jangle33 · 17/01/2021 10:49

There was a poster on another thread who thought they were still in tier 3. Another who’s friend thought secondary school kids were returning on Monday! People need to be constantly reminded their actions affect others. My friend’s mum is being ambulanced to hospital as we speak. She’s clearly caught it from one of her carers. Her chances are survival are minimal, not least because of how overrun our hospitals are with people who caught Covid who could have avoided it.

Personally I think there should be wall to wall Govt/TV coverage like the Newsnight ICU filming from Friday. The mental anguish our poor doctors are dealing with is inexcusable.
It is right and proper than people take responsibility for their actions so that those who have no choice but to go out, have a hope in hell of survival if they do catch it!

This is exactly the message that government should be sending out. Lockdown is in place to save lives and keep people safe. But too many people are still out and about for totally non essential reasons.

A neighbour of mine has had a visitor numerous times per week- DH and I reported this to the police but apparently it's ok as they're in a 'support bubble'. Hmm Neither party are vulnerable and in need of one.

We also have another neighbour who visits multiple shops multiple times per day. Last week they came back with just a bottle of lemonade. Again, we reported this to the police as it was in our view not an essential trip or purchase.

Nothing has been done yet Hmm

Christ, stop bothering the police with your own mad interpretation of the law - the most likely prosecution here is you for wasting police time!

I agree about the message but I don’t call the police on everyone I see breaking the rules, my neighbours have visitors now, I’m pretty sure it’s not a support bubble (both my neighbours and the visitors are not single or vulnerable) but I won’t be phoning the police. I’m struggling a bit today, My dc have gone to their dads and I’m on my own, I don’t have a support bubble as such because of my job (it’s too risky to be in contact with more people), I would love to see a friend today or go for a drive to go for a nice walk but I can’t.
Whatever9999 · 17/01/2021 11:32

Its not slightly OTT its very OTT and IMO borders on, hell no not even borders on, it is psychological and emotional abuse

boys3 · 17/01/2021 11:40

Probably in part a reaction to BCP having 68 deaths within 28 days of a positive test recorded in December and 112 deaths in the first two weeks of January.

FranklyTruly · 17/01/2021 11:51

The point is that we should all be at home at all times. Unless we have an essential reason to go out- such as being a key worker or unable to get a food delivery and having literally no food at home.

No one in my house has left home since before Christmas- in order to save lives and keep people safe.

I can't imagine what our poor NHS nurses are thinking seeing people in and out or shops buying non essentials or going for multiple walks per day.

I'd make the rules much simpler- stay the fuck at home. Unless you are an actual key worker.

You do realise there are 1000s of people who are not classed as keyworkers who have to go to work?

Right, but that isn't the rules, because you don't make the rules because you're a random, seemingly somewhat unstable, person. So stop bothering the police about people breaking rules that you've just made up in your head.

I've just taken my toddler for a walk. No rules broken, no one will die as a result. It is completely irrelevant whether you think I should be allowed to do it, I am.

Aren’t you the poster who wants all weddings to happen via Zoom forever more? I can’t tell if you’re on a windup or if this situation has really badly affected you.
RedskyBynight · 17/01/2021 12:59

I actually think there are still some people out there who don't realise how serious things are.
We had Christmas plans with my parents and brother which were scuppered when both we and my brother (2 different areas) went into Tier 4 on 20th December. Both my parents and brother suggested moving our meetup to mid January. It was crystal clear to me watching the rapidly rising cases around us and seeing local hospitals swamped, that this was never going to happen. But I was met with incredulity when I said perhaps Easter or even the summer might be more realistic.

As DH reminded me, there are lots of people that are not more informed than just reading news headlines (if that) and so, if things seem unchanged within their own small sphere, might not understand the gravity of the situation. By definition, everyone posting on this forum is more interested than the average person in the street (or at home).

Mumofsend · 17/01/2021 15:11

@FranklyTruly stop wasting police time ffs. You have no authority or means to determine their need for a support bubble. You have no way of knowing exactly why they are going out to the shops. For all you know they went for an appointment and bought a bottle on the way back.

Unless its something like a party you do you and leave your poor neighbour alone as you sound like you are borderline harassing them.

Timbucktime · 17/01/2021 16:47

Who says people are all out buying non essentials? The Daily Mail?

Or are you out yourself around having a nose in our peoples shopping trolleys deciding what you think is essential or not.

Ilovewolfblass · 17/01/2021 17:31

It’s mental! People who go to work are killers!!!

I believe we need to learn to live with this. Schools, gyms and restaurants open with social distancing. Give vaccines to health workers, careers, teachers and shop workers first- elderly after them. We have given up too much already.

Ilovewolfblass · 17/01/2021 17:34

Are you an old person?

MercyBooth · 17/01/2021 17:39

If John Hurt was still alive they would probably be asking him to do a voiceover for them.

PrincessNutNuts · 17/01/2021 17:49

OP that's official government messaging.

Legally checked for factual accuracy etc.
