www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/19016790.people-will-die---bcp-puts-strong-covid-message/

Just to make it clear, I am absolutely in favour of doing everything possible to reduce and manage the spread of Covid, but given that almost every other person I know is suffering huge mental stress due to the current lockdown, and even though I am fairly resilient I'm also feeling the strain, I'm quite nonplussed by the campaign in our area. And judging by the reader vote people are in favour of it.

Surely by now the majority of people are all too well aware of the seriousness of the situation, and the vaccine is supposed to be the light at the end of the tunnel?

I guess I'm more in favour of carrots than sticks, but maybe I'm in the minority. This just feels a little hysterical.....

That is way over the top, and obviously aimed solely at the age group represented by the person in it - ie the elderly.

They practically never go out anyway, and all this will do is frighten them silly.

megletthesecond · 16/01/2021 16:26

That is actually mental.

It'll scare vulnerable people who would benefit from fresh air and a walk. But it won't work on the laddish types who think they're immortal. Neither will it force employers to make their work places safer. This virus isn't spreading by going for a walk along the beach or park, it's spreading in homes and dodgy workplaces.

And this is the kind of thing that is probably driving transmission more than anything else....

The people who refuse to wear masks, socially distance and follow the govt rules and guidance will not be swayed by this message. They will just carry on as they have been doing for the last year.

It will probably scare people who already take care and do follow the rules though.

And actually the message of 'don't go out' is at odds with the govt stance which is to allow food and drink places to stay open for takeaway, churches to remain open for worship, click and collect of non essential goods, estate agents to stay open, non essential trades people and cleaners to come into your home..... etc - thus encouraging people to go out!

herecomesthsun · 16/01/2021 16:36

I think it is reasonable. After all, if you have covid and you do go out, then you could spread it. So that is literally true.

Why do you think it is aimed at the elderly?

Surely it is aimed at low risk people? As high risk people are more likely to limit activities to protect themselves?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 16:38

Is it reasonable to make key workers live under the apparent knowledge that if they go out people will die?

@MistressoftheDarkSide did you get the postcard delivered this morning? Telling us about Covid. FFS, like we don't realise a pandemic is happening. I wonder how much that mailshot cost.

CrocodilesCry · 16/01/2021 16:44

Like others have said - it's not the council's campaign, it's part of the national campaign.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 16:49

@Punxsutawney Oh joy.... no I haven't yet.....

Daisysflowers · 16/01/2021 16:50

Saw this pop up earlier on my feed and I did have to do a double take.

Crazy message to send out.

Again trying to divide us all...Angry

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 16:51

I disagree with the tone regardless of whether its local or national. Save lives gives the opportunity to do the right thing, while "people will die" apportion blame.

It just made me think of this

My local council...... is this slightly OTT?
NailsNeedDoing · 16/01/2021 16:54

It’s ridiculous that either government or local governments would say this when they are expecting plenty of their own employees to go out and work for them.

Jrobhatch29 · 16/01/2021 16:55

@Zesting

It just made me think of this
, 😂
Punxsutawney · 16/01/2021 16:58

"Postcards are being sent to 185,000 households explaining how serious the picture is locally"

You may get yours next week Mistress!

VoyageInTheDark · 16/01/2021 16:58

Wow. I think they've spent too much time on MN.

trilbydoll · 16/01/2021 17:03

It's also factually incorrect. I could go on a tour of the local area, if I don't have COVID no one is dying. I prefer the campaign that says act as if you have it.

I know it's not as snappy but it really should say if you go round your mum's house / shopping / work with symptoms people will die.

Plussizejumpsuit · 16/01/2021 17:03

But it's also factually untrue. I wenr out to look after my sister's children. No on died.

I certainly think we need to be in lockdown right now. But this fucking rediculous. I think it's at a point where is is so scary and ott people will tune it out. My partner works in comms so I know a little bit about it and psychology of it. Perhaps more than the people who made this campaign.

NastyBlouse · 16/01/2021 17:05

It’s a classic example of that age-old political axiom:

something must be done
this is something
so let’s do this

The paper’s been a bit naughty itself there though for the header image, cutting out the middle ‘spread it’ one so it just looks like IF YOU GO OUT PEOPLE WILL DIE which of course is not true.

inquietant · 16/01/2021 17:06

It is 'government provided content' so presumably lots of us will see it soon enough.

Mummylin · 16/01/2021 17:06

Another Bournemouth person here, I think it's a shocking notice to put out and for people of a nervous disposition , it's very scary.

ListeningQuietly · 16/01/2021 17:08

BCP is, demographically, the oldest part of the country
and the Forest MPs (Chope, Lewis, Swayne) have all been fighting Lockdown rules

Because many of the people in BCP are wealthy and retired, case loads have stayed very low
but if people relax, it will rattle through in a rather devastating manner

AND
Its not a BCP campaign, its just been rolled out there

Punxsutawney · 16/01/2021 17:11

The postcards are a BCP campaign, I think? I don't think they have be sent out nationally.

murbblurb · 16/01/2021 17:11

oh dear, that is shocking. As others mention, the dumbfuck brigade won't listen. How about this:

  • Covid 19 IS very infectious
  • you CAN get very ill or die at any age. It is not just the old people
  • you may not know that you have it
  • keep at least 2 metres apart (imagine a tall dead body lying between you)
  • wear a face covering properly
  • wash your hands properly and often
  • you can't have much fun at the moment. Suck it up, buttercup.
  • stay out of the way if you are not essential

plus help for those who have to self isolate.

too straightforward?

murbblurb · 16/01/2021 17:12

oh yes, plus:

  • the NHS is under tremendous strain. There may not be the help you need at the moment. If you keep spreading the virus, that situation will go on longer.
