My local council...... is this slightly OTT?

www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/19016790.people-will-die---bcp-puts-strong-covid-message/

Just to make it clear, I am absolutely in favour of doing everything possible to reduce and manage the spread of Covid, but given that almost every other person I know is suffering huge mental stress due to the current lockdown, and even though I am fairly resilient I'm also feeling the strain, I'm quite nonplussed by the campaign in our area. And judging by the reader vote people are in favour of it.

Surely by now the majority of people are all too well aware of the seriousness of the situation, and the vaccine is supposed to be the light at the end of the tunnel?

I guess I'm more in favour of carrots than sticks, but maybe I'm in the minority. This just feels a little hysterical.....

OP I'm in the same area and I think we got off lightly the first time round. This variant is affecting our area quite badly.

The Bournemouth echo isn't the most reliable source anyway as you must know living round here 😂😂. :-)

inquietant · 16/01/2021 17:54

I do wonder if they are panicking somewhat, yes.

inquietant · 16/01/2021 17:54

That was to @Stovetopespresso

bookworm14 · 16/01/2021 17:57

It is appalling and will do nothing other than terrify the already anxious and compliant. Those breaking the rules will continue to do so. Why are people so content to live in this bizarre dystopia?

Quarantino · 16/01/2021 17:59

Bloody hell. I'm all for strong, clear, messaging, and I think (some!) people aren't really listening and internalising how they will need to change their behaviour to minimise risk.

But these posters are terrible. Like pp have said, not really accurate, not really helpful, not really the way we want peoplw to think about risk.

It's absolute crap.

littleowl1 · 16/01/2021 18:02

Bournemouth is one of the few councils that has rising rates now and they are very high. See www.covidmessenger.com/

Goldieloxx · 16/01/2021 18:04

Shock public health campaigns are proven to work. Trust your local Director of Public Health and council comms team that they know what they are doing

oakleaffy · 16/01/2021 18:05

How hysterical is that!
I’m out now, for essential shopping, in the dark but someone is coughing ahead, so I just crossed the road.
To go out with an active cough is very selfish.

etopp · 16/01/2021 18:10

I would be tempted to graffiti-ise a "people will die" poster with "oh no they won't".

I can't believe we're back to "anyone with a cough should stay at home until 2121", either.

Lulu1919 · 16/01/2021 18:11

I'm a BCP resident
Those messages don't bother me if it makes people take this more seriously
The numbers here are are rising quickly

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 18:14

But why are numbers here rising so quickly? Now I mean? When we're talking two weeks of tight restrictions limiting the options for contact?

OP posts:
oakleaffy · 16/01/2021 18:17

Totally agree with en masse shopping
Men being dragged along and kids too for a food shop!
Leave the second adult and kids outside.
Kids are a risk, don’t keep distance and touch everything and young ones often have a finger rammed up a nostril that then gets placed on trolley bar &c
Too many use a trip to ships as an outing - more than one adult in a group with kids in tow.

A single parent hasn’t much choice though

FabbyMagic · 16/01/2021 18:17

Because a fair number aren’t following the rules so doesn’t really matter that restrictions are in place

oakleaffy · 16/01/2021 18:19

I heard deaths tend to kick in a month after initial contact with virus?
FreshFreesias · 16/01/2021 18:21

It’s just complete hysteria.
There is absolutely no thought or concern given to those whose lives have been destroyed by endless lockdowns.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 18:23

DP had to go out today related 3our business to pick up post. He said there were a few people about but it was mainly dead. He also said those he did see were muttering to themselves and not on their phones. He is quite disturbed by this. I don't believe that a fair number aren't following the rules after 2 weeks. There is nowhere to go other than essential shopping. Why isn't this being policed more rigorously? Is the new strain surviving longer on surfaces? Isn't the hygiene method working? If so why aren't the totally isolated catching it every time shopping comes in?

middleager · 16/01/2021 18:24

Meanwhile decent numbers of children are in schools, along with staff (certainly by me in the West Mids, not sure about Bournemouth?).

user1493494961 · 16/01/2021 18:24

But people are dying.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 18:25

Not that I agree with heavy handed policing as such. I'm just trying to work out the "logic" and shake off the feeling that there's something about to be revealed.

OP posts:
Dodie66 · 16/01/2021 18:27

That’s. What Chris Whitby said www.thesun.co.uk/news/13692918/boris-johnson-staying-home-vital-ever-deadliest-day-covid/

Dodie66 · 16/01/2021 18:28

Whitty

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/01/2021 18:28

Yes people are dying, and every death is a tragedy, but they are not dying if people leave their house and are abiding by the rules, which over 90% are according to the government. Do the 10% of rule breakers correlate meaningfully with case increases? Or are more people than that getting the virus? Are those studies being done?

OP posts:
NeverForgetYourDreams · 16/01/2021 18:37

If you look at the daily fail it shows a picture of a packed Bournemouth promenade today ....

Our local park was rammed today with dog walkers and families. Roads were busy too when I had to do the weekly food shop

inquietant · 16/01/2021 18:38

Yes, these studies are being done, and what happened in Scotland was they identified people were going out for an 'essential' activity but then adding things on or staying longer.

The feeling is that people are 'complying' but not really complying iyswim.

inquietant · 16/01/2021 18:39

I think all that 'a scotch egg is a substantial meal' bollocks has rather come home to roost just at the wrong time Sad
