Would you chose the pfizer or oxford vaccine?

I had mine yesterday as I’m a health care worker. I had a choice of 2 locations and the one I went to did the pfizer vaccine as it was in a hospital and had freezer storage. If I had picked the other location I would have got the Oxford one.

Didn’t know this before I booked which is just as well as I would have ended up researching it for ages, but just out of curiosity would you have chosen one over the other?

same Grin

@CrackOpenTheGin

I thought the oxford vaccine was 90% with the accidental half dosing schedule which we aren’t using. Is there actually any published research about the 12 week 90% data? I’ve looked but can’t find any apart from an oxford bloke saying that.
@CrackOpenTheGin

No, they looked at the data and realised there was a confounding variable - the length of time between doses. It turned out that those in the 'half dose' regimen had received their second dose between 3-26 weeks later. Further statistical analysis when applied to the whole data set showed that it was the longer length of time that contributed to the 90% efficacy, not the half dose.

I had Pfizer today as a carer.

DirtyDancing · 17/01/2021 16:52

Either! My GP friend said to me last week they are seeing more side effects with the AZ one.. which has marginally made me hope I’m offered the Pfizer. However my MIL has scared me more reading DM about the Pfizer one!! Lol However, GP mate said he has had it, don’t worry. I’ll take what I am given

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/01/2021 17:40

My uncle and his partner had their first AZ vaccine on Thursday and neither had any side effects. I'll probably get every side effect going!

Shitzngiggles · 17/01/2021 22:43

I've had the AZ one, no side effects at all.

candle18 · 18/01/2021 00:29

@x2boys I was told that most GP surgery’s would be giving the Oxford one as they don’t have the deep freeze facilities for the Pfizer one.

@BertTheBeetle have you got a link for that you could share?

myhobby · 18/01/2021 01:24

😂 jeez. Suddenly everyone is an expert in medicine. Embarrassing

NewspaperTaxis · 18/01/2021 01:25

Give a person a choice, you give them a dilemma.

However, my understanding is that in this vaccine programme, we have no choice. You book the appointment, and you're not told which one it will be until you arrive to get it.
Does anyone know when the Pfizer one will be used up and the general one being rolled out to the public will be the Oxford one?
Is there any way of accessing this information?

BertTheBeetle · 18/01/2021 01:50

I’ll have a look for it. It was shared/explained in the JCVI press briefing on 30th Dec. It was a very interesting briefing, I recommend watching it. Three immensely clever scientists sharing their knowledge and JCVI conclusions in a very easy to understand way.

lovelemoncurd · 18/01/2021 01:51

Either. I think people are interpreting the results of trials through the eyes of the Daily Mail.

They both do the job. If I was pregnant or immunocompromised then that would sway me but otherwise not.

JCVI press briefing on the decision to introduce a 12 week vaccination schedule. Well worth the time to watch it.

Madwife123 · 18/01/2021 01:53

I wanted Pfizer but now that we are delaying the second dose with no evidence it works correctly that way I’ve declined vaccination.

DramaAlpaca · 18/01/2021 01:55

I don't mind which I get.

My elderly parents in their mid-80s got the Pfizer one last week.

You're not going to grow three heads!

You'd have had some immunity if you'd had a vaccination, now you have none

Well done you - that really showed them!
🙄🙄

I have a (daft) question. Family member is classed as obese. I've read obesity is in the 'priority category' but it wouldn't be on your GP records say like for instance diabetes, so how would they know to call you in?

victoriaspongecake · 18/01/2021 04:27

So if immunity lasts 12 weeks what happens afterwards? Do we queue up for another vaccination?

Your weight is usually recorded, but I guess if they have had a significant weight gain since they last went they could email the surgery and explain their concerns.

It's HIGHLY unlikely only to last such a short period of time. It s being monitored so we will get more & more knowledge as we go. I'm trying to think of the name if the guy that was on tv the other day...but can't. But he was a specialist from somewhere respectable. (Sorry brain fog!!). He was saying a lot of vaccines we only ever need once, so it could last forever, some we need boosters after many years snd fir things like the flu jab, we have it annually because of the various strains. He expects that we might need it every few years to combat new variants.

Only time will tell.

All that will happen is we will get informed, like we do with the flu jab

Well that and it'll be ALL over the osiers COVID IS BACK with sad faces and reused photos from this pandemic. 🙄

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 18/01/2021 04:57

@victoriaspongecake

What it will NOT do is go from high immunity to no immunity quickly, it's just not how it works.

MrsDoctorDear · 18/01/2021 05:09

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants yes I suppose it's best to be proactive.

isthismylifenow · 18/01/2021 07:15

We haven't started vaccinating yet, the first batch will be the Covax initiative, so they will be Pfizer and AZ, but only for 10% of our population.

And then we are part of the African Union and through that scheme we will be getting Pfizer, AZ from India and Johnson and Johnson.

I don't have any facts to back it up, but I suspect that the J&J will be offered to those in the more outlying areas, as its a single dose.

The aim is to vaccinate 60% of the population. We don't have the funding the the 1st world countries do, so banking on herd immunity.

We shouldn't expect to be vaccinated until much later this year.

I have read so much about how badly the UK government has handled the pandemic, but you were one of the first to get vaccines.

justanotherneighinparadise · 18/01/2021 07:22

I’d have to do a lot of research to really give a correct answer but I guess I’d want whichever was the most effective one with the least side effects.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 18/01/2021 10:19

@BertTheBeetle thanks for the link. So with the 12 week spacing they efficacy up to 80%. Which is a great result really.
