Older people booking holidays

I've been away from MN for a few days so apologies if this was done.

Following the news that the vaccination programme is in full swing, apparently travel companies have had a rush of older people booking holidays for this summer.

We're being told that behaviour will need to carry on with social distancing, restricting travel etc despite some people having the vaccine.

Young people have been disproportionately affected by the restrictions and been reminded often of their duty to protect the more vulnerable, but apparently those vulnerable people aren't going to give a second thought for the youngsters once they've had the vaccine.

Is this a common view among the, say, 60+ people you know?

Or is it OK, or even good, that some people can start getting back to normal/supporting the economy etc?

How will this kind of 2 tier society operate?

“ No generation alive now has had anything like a pandemic to live with.”

What about WWII?

My local garden centre is always full of the retired, meanwhile a whole generation of students and young people have to stay at home.
Students and young people can go to the garden centre (and any other places that are open) too. I have no idea what your point is here.

Somehow I don't think they'd let racist threads remain so they can be challenged.

And rationing?
And the country being 2 days away from famine in the late 1940’s
Conscription-being forced to go to war somewhere

To suddenly change the narrative to being concerned people might contact the virus and possibly transmit to others is camouflage for their real feelings towards the older and possibly more financially well off generation.

Absolutely this. It was fine for posters to spend last year telling the elderly to shut themselves away so everyone else could carry on as normal, but now when it seems that through vaccination the risk to the elderly will be reduced to the same as the rest of the population, providing THEY DO THE SAME THINGS AS THE REST OF THE POPULATION IS ALLOWED TO, they’ve shown their true colours.

If holidays are permitted then everyone will be allowed to book. And tbh since all elderly people are rolling in money (another lazy stereotype) surely it’s good for the economy for people to be out spending money?

Let’s just say MNHQ know what their demographic is.

I must have missed the ruling which said the retired are allowed to go to garden centres while all the young people have to stay at home.

@PicsInRed

What many are missing here is that the vaccines protect the recipient against severe disease, but DO NOT stop them contracting or transmitting the infection to someone else.

The reason some are angry is that these vaccinated people will go abroad, potentially contract covid, not get that ill, but transmit it to others. This will keep the spread going at a high level for longer and ensure that restrictions continue for longer - thereby continuing to greatly impact the young.

People won’t be going abroad unless the incidence of infection in the population is low and those who do so are no more likely to pick up the infection and transmit to others than they were this year. Why is it so offensive now that older and previously more vulnerable people will have the same risk status that the younger and fitter people have had all along?
saraclara · 16/01/2021 18:20

Everyone who hasn't been vaccinated can potentially transmit the virus. Those who've been vaccinated are very much less likely, if at all, to do so. Yet posters on here seem to think they're MORE likely to do so, and should stay at home? Simply because they're old?

What on earth sort of logic is that?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/01/2021 18:41

Transmission from the vaccination hasn’t been proved or disproved. But the medics seem to think it will prevent transmission. If so those terrible evil old people will be able to go out and about doing WHATEVER THEY WANT!!!

And good for them. I love it that they will feel safe. For shame all the moaners on here griping about it. It will be great to see them out and about, shopping, meeting even going on holiday!

Their fear is much greater than a 20 year old or 30 year old. Let them have what they can whilst they can.

I think it's important to remember that the Tories will be delighted people are squabbling like this about the personal choices individuals make, rather than taking about the massive, fatal, corrupt mistakes the government has made in handling the pandemic.

They really want us to not see the wood for the trees.

Yes - over 100,000 dead (the real figure, not the within 28 days government cooked figure), and Boris Johnson is still there, still causing extra deaths with every delayed, incompetent and duplicitous decision he makes.

It's not logic, it's ageism. .

Anyone can book a holiday. Just make sure you have the required insurance in case something changes and you need to cancel or amend it
