Remove the police from the countryside and direct their efforts at indoor transmission: supermarkets, shops, workplaces, etc. What about people visiting other households?
?Already banned apart from support bubbles so yes the police can direct their attention here to as it is a proven means of virus transmission. They could start with public indoor places (supermarkets, shops, many other workplaces) if domestic settings are too hard.

No evidence of outdoor transmission, particularly if very few people are about, so why the concentration of valuable scarce policing hours on the countryside etc?
Not the best use their time in terms of reducing virus transmission, which is after all what the lockdown restrictions are for, not making us miserable, scared, fat, intimidated, fined.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/01/2021 17:50

AFAIK - a travel corridor and travel border are different

Yes, they are - but no doubt some rag will run with a headline about "Boris closing borders"

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 17:51

Supermarkets and shops are generally well managed though. They don’t need police surveillance.

Parties can be interrupted but no right of entry, just from outside

Yet ...!!

Looking on the bright side though, it's a good use for all that stockpiled loo roll; paste it to the windows and pretend you only have your aged mum in there Wink

Porcupineintherough · 15/01/2021 17:55

Parties can be interrupted but no right of entry

The police can enter a building if they think a crime is in progress.

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 17:56

Ha! Puzzled

Cressida Dick spoke well on it, she’s not asking for it to change. I like her not sure how much say she has but I doubt it will change

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 17:56

Personally I really don’t need to see police on Sainsbury’s run. It really is so orderly they’re not needed

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 17:57

The police can enter a building if they think a crime is in progress.

Do you think they can for a party atm?

GabsAlot · 15/01/2021 17:58

i dont think theyre well managed at all b and m is like a free for all no counting how many poeple no one way systems anywhere anymore
MaxNormal · 15/01/2021 17:58

Travel corridors closed just means people will have to quarantine. It's not the same as shutting the borders.

SophieB100 · 15/01/2021 17:58

Did anyone else pick up on the emphasis Boris made (twice) about touching items that have Covid on them? I wonder if they know something about the new variant, that they're finding it lingers more on surfaces?

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 17:59

I think someone has to be in immediate danger to enter without a warrant

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 17:59

Sad times probably area dependent

They must be, or how could they ever enter a property where someone else had reported a potential crime taking place? What if you reported screams in fear for the safety of a neighbour and the police said 'well, we can enquire from outside and ask if everything's ok'? Confused

Patently untrue when you look at where the virus is being caught.

Plus there is a law on face coverings which the police have refused to enforce. That would be a start.

There are no laws on outdoor exercise, and isn't a source of virus transmission, so why the overarching focus here?

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 18:04

Buttery see pp they can if someone is in imminent danger. But a party doesn’t represent that

Butterymuffin · 15/01/2021 18:04

@Calmandmeasured1

Pfizer have announced possible delays to vaccine manufacturing could affect EU countries. I hope this doesn't affect us, as a non-EU country, too.
I thought our more immediate problem was distributing the doses we already have in the UK.
flamboyanttip · 15/01/2021 18:05

They are allowed to enter is there is a risk to human life (immediate risk not a risk in 2-4 weeks' time).
They are not allowed to check if you are having a party in covid lockdown.

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 18:05

It’s from an interview with Cressida Dick. I found it quite interesting as hadn’t thought about it

bluecheesefan · 15/01/2021 18:06

So...

What is the difference between a travel corridor and a border then?

Butterymuffin · 15/01/2021 18:06

@MarshaBradyo

Buttery see pp they can if someone is in imminent danger. But a party doesn’t represent that
Cross posted Marsha. So does that mean if you report a rowdy party still going on a few doors away at 3am, the police can't intervene?
MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2021 18:07

Plus there is a law on face coverings which the police have refused to enforce. That would be a start.

Really not needed at zone 2 supermarket it has near 100% compliance. Maybe different elsewhere

Could be needed on public transport but OT police do that? Not sure

Yes! I did notice that. He did seem to emphasise it very much.

Maybe also why PV did emphasise indoor spaces and ventilation also.

Nowhere as well ventilated as the outdoors, but that apparently needs the most policing.

OnlyTeaForMe · 15/01/2021 18:08

Good to see Sir Patrick reinforcing the message about the currently unknown impact on transmission and that "just because you have been vaccinated it doesn't mean that you can't catch the virus and pass it on, you will likely just not be so ill with it"
(I'm paraphrasing, but I think that was the gist of it)

However I felt they glossed over the question from the young journalist who asked about the plan/ expectations for what would happen for the younger groups once all the most vulnerable had been vaccinated?
