How should masks be enforced in public?

User158340 · 11/01/2021 16:27

Indoors in general (shops, public transport etc).

I don't believe in making it mandatory because there are people who are genuinely exempt but there's so many piss takers.

There should be 'medically exempt' badges dished out by GP's only, on prescription essentially.

This should have been GP led from the get go, not trusting the British public. We see where that gets us.

@XenoBitch

If a random shopper asked me where my mask was I would tell them it is in the same aisle as the 'mind your own fucking business' section.
Yes, that’s just the kind of answer I would expect from someone like yourself.
Ilovemypantry · 13/01/2021 21:04

I’m leaving this thread now, it’s getting boring.
I’m off to wash my masks ready for my supermarket trip tomorrow. Hope you’re all doing the same.

XenoBitch · 13/01/2021 21:04

@GirlCrush - I would say my response and just walk away. Shoppers should not be challenging anyone and I am not into conflict. Honestly, I would ignore any shopper who asked and only reply if they keep harassing me... at which point I would be approaching security to deal with them.

GirlCrush · 13/01/2021 21:13

we dont have security and staff just tannoy me to deal with conflict. I'm sick of it. as an essential retailer selling attractive items as well, we are attracting more and more customers

we are open,a large warehouse, good stock levels....ideal for a family day out so the kids can run around and let off steam apparently!! (so a proud mum told me yesterday! she was asked to get what she needed and get them all out quickly, we were not there for entertainment)can you imagine the mouthful i got back?

i was also told to enforce mask wearing at least 4 times yesterday. like, how?? told we were disgusting for letting people in with no masks.

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/01/2021 23:45

But why would someone pick up a lanyard and pretend they’re exempt if they’re not? What would be the point unless they deliberately wanted to spread the virus? Do people like that actually exist?

@Ilovemypantry. And here your logic baffles me. You 100% believe that people will pretend they are exempt and not wear a mask, but you cannot comprehend that someone could also wear a lanyard and pretend they are exempt too. People who fake being exempt don’t all walk around with no mask and no lanyard.

@Maverickess
Good post. I’d support a proof system for mask exempt, if it were not so late and it being a second wave. I fear that horse has long bolted. It is definitely something they should do for next epidemic though because the public have proven they cannot be trusted to comply when able.

MercyBooth · 14/01/2021 01:02

Yes im sure that is the reason you are leaving the thread ilovemypantry. Nothing to do with @confuseddotcom090 post making your sphincter twitch

MercyBooth · 14/01/2021 01:05

YY @PlanDeRaccordement Its something that should have been done by last May at the latest . As masks came in for public transport last June and for shops last July.

LangClegsInSpace · 14/01/2021 01:10

I've not read the whole thread but it looks like a complete bin fire. Can I call 'house' yet?

How should masks be enforced in public?
sneakysnoopysniper · 14/01/2021 03:14

Anyone with a computer and a printer could knock off a convincing looking letter from their GP surgery.

EffOrf · 14/01/2021 05:07
Or, you could do it the Western Australia way...

$50000 fine

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/no-mask-could-mean-50-000-fine-with-new-rules-in-force-at-perth-airport-20210113-p56txe.html
This is punishing the poor as usual, the rich could afford this, punishment by fines allow the rich to do what they want, but never mind it keeps the plebs in line.

GADDay · 14/01/2021 05:13

@EffOrf

Not even the rich could afford a $50k fine. Well not in my world anyway.

I don't like it but the Land Of Rules (aka Australia) has taken a hard line and for the most part it has worked. Perhaps less consultation in a pandemic might be the way to go?

EffOrf · 14/01/2021 05:20

I'm talking about the people that ofter flout, footballers and so called 'celebrities' that don't care and do what they want, a fine like that wouldn't touch them.

HermioneMakepeace · 14/01/2021 05:26

I guess the old bouncer on the door is the only way.

They have this at my local Tesco Metro. He stands at the front of the store managing the queue and enforcing mask wearing.

And guess what... he doesn’t wear a mask! Well, he has one, it sits under his chin. It makes me so angry. I have to wear 2 masks as I am vulnerable and a few times now I’ve thought I was going to pass out.

bombaychef · 14/01/2021 23:00

The only person I know that doesn't just wear a mask and has an exemption lanyard is because they are a very active conspiracy theorist.

MmeLaraque · 01/02/2021 20:19

Can someone please explain the exemptions. If one is exempt, does that mean one is also immune to covid? This is a respiratory virus. Spreads using people's breath, amongst other things (touch, etc). It must be terrifying to understand that and work in a place where people don't mask, for whatever reason. The viral load from just a few people every hour in a supermarket is going to be horrendous.

I had to ask a plumber today to put a mask on before they came into our house. I had mine, and offered to provide one if they didn't have one. This plumber advertises full PPE, but wasn't going to wear that mask until specifically requested. Again, this is a respiratory virus. It carries on people's breath. It doesn't discriminate like people do.

I understand completely why people think Johnson and the UK govt are bellends. Understaning why people won't wear a mask, and protect themselves/each other? Nope. I don't understand that at all.

Exemption does not equal immunity.

EmmanuelleMakro · 01/02/2021 20:34

I’ve had the same mask since they were made compulsory. Gets washed if I accidentally leave it in my jeans pocket but the rest of the time it’s either screwed up in my bag or on the floor in my car. I wear it if I have to but don’t really give a damn whether it actually does anything.
I hace s couple of ‘disposable’ ones that that live in my handbag and the car and just don for minimum amount of time to tick the box
Thry are utterly pointless anyway -superstitious nonsense.

MrsMercedes · 01/02/2021 20:45

hmmm 'pointless' eh?

our sickness rate at work is a third what its been on previous years....nobody seems to be getting, sick? how so? no coughs, colds or stomach issues.

and masks aren't part of that of course, no no no

MmeLaraque · 02/02/2021 23:40

Masks are not pointless. They are certainly *not "superstitious nonsense." They're necessary to help prevent the spread of what is a nasty respiratory disease.

There is plenty of scientific evidence to support the wearing of masks. You choosing to ignore that evidence does not negate it.

BonnieDundee · 03/02/2021 00:49

I agree about maks being pointless. Even Chris whitty said so at one point. I do wear one though as I dont want a fine. cant wait to chuck them in the bin

Chrs Whitty said that, did he? Can you provide a link? I'm looking for that. I know that the UK govt did, but they're incompetent, so I'd expect that of them.

Either way, masks aren't pointless. WHy woudl you think they are? Did you not do biology at school?

MmeLaraque · 06/02/2021 16:54

MArch 2020. I think you'll find that was just before they realised this one is airborne.

Also : “The only people we do sometimes use masks for are people who have got an infection and that is to help them to stop it spreading around," he added."

The whole point of masks is to stop this one spreading. It's a respiratory virus, so spread on people's breath. On the droplets. So, wear a mask whether you have symptoms or not.

It's been interesting to watch the reactions of people globally about masks. They're basically an act of kindness to help prevent other people from becoming infected by a respiratory virus that kills random people.

Why is that so difficult for some people to do? No one is immune, so we all need to be wearing them.
