Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??

Schools closed, work places closed, nailbars, hairdressers, clothes shops, closed. My high street is dead and a couple of big shops are permanently closing down. We've been totally indoors, going out only to get grocery and exercise.

Oh, gyms are closed, no play dates, birthdays, dinners or even coffee with friends. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD??? What would "tighter" restrictions mean? To me, next tighter level means no grocery and exercise :(

My local hospital is totally full. I don't understand why.

@alexdgr8

close churches nurseries playgrounds outdoor gyms only one shopper per trolley no entry to shops/buses etc without face covering. only walk for exercise from home, no driving there. food shopping within 5 miles no non-essential shopping masks to be worn when outdoors.
OK, so no food for my family. Supermarket six miles away 😆

Personally my fear with more restrictions is that people will very quickly get to the point where they think what’s the point, whatever we do isn’t good enough so what’s the point in complying at all. There is far too much stick and not enough carrot and that only works for so long,

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 21:16

Really make those who can work ar home do so, many companies are having people in who cod work at home, first lockdown no garden centres , macdonalds , costa etc were open was only deliveries.
Support bubbles could be tightened as some seem to have a support bubble and childcare - don't think this is technically allowed anyway but some are doing.
Non essential shops and construction could close like last time.

CharBart · 10/01/2021 21:17

Closing outdoor places down will just put more people in the places that are open without actually reducing infection. A stronger line on working from home would actually make a difference.
Numbers of cases and hospital admissions at the moment are from activity at Christmas. We’ll need another week or so to see what difference the new restrictions make.

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 21:17

please tell me you’re joking?

Grin

I was thinking the same, it's getting harder and harder to tell what's serious and what's not on these threads anymore, it's gone next fucking level lol!

Can someone explain how a curfew would help? I don't know anyone who is out past 8pm except people coming off shifts? Surely doing your shopping at 1am is safer than peak times?

I still think nurseries should be shut like schools. And places like McDonald's and costa aren't really necessary essential travel (though I have popped to a drive through on the way back from taking my toddler for a walk - locally fwiw, I could easily have walked to where we went but it would have been a bit much for him and busy roads).

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 21:18

My friend has 24 kids in her class out of 30 ish he first lockdown about 10 or so

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 21:18

Non essential shops are already closed.
(Not sure about whether construction is so no comment on that)

IHateCoronavirus · 10/01/2021 21:19

They need to tighten it to get the numbers down.
Only exercise within walking distance would be one, we live within a couple of minutes walk of a not very beautiful ‘beauty spot’ the number of cars lining the road has skyrocketed. We went out for our daily exercise and ended up coming home as it was rammed there. It didn’t feel safe at all.

I think that support bubbles should remain open but I think some sort of declaration needs to be in place to stop some people taking the piss.

Even then though, there are going to be some families which have a naturally large contact group and I don’t think you can limit that fairly. For example our NDN has 2DC who live 50/50 with him and their DM, both new partners also have children who live 50/50 with both sets of their parents beyond that who knows. Since NDN separated his parents spend a lot of time with them. There will be a good number of families in the same position who would struggle to limit their contacts any further.

The number of people who are keen to get the army on the streets is disturbing. What are the army going to do that the police can’t? Shoot people?

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 10/01/2021 21:19

We’ve been properly locked down less than a week. Cases entering hospital today would likely have been exposed at least 12 days ago. It’s going to take a while to start having some effect

Robbybobtail · 10/01/2021 21:20

It wouldn’t, but misery really likes company and there are many many sad, miserable bastards on mumsnet unfortunately.

Littlewhitedove2 · 10/01/2021 21:21

Why on Earth are people saying close outdoor parks and woodland car parks? These are the things we should be encouraging! It’s meeting inside friends and families homes in secret, children still at school, offices that won’t let workers WFH and tradespersons / builders in an out of houses / building sites with no measures followed that will be the problem (if numbers don’t go down in the next 2 weeks)
It takes 2-3 weeks to see any effect from measures so we haven’t even seen the effect from this lockdown yet!

It won’t help. It’s total bollocks that sounds tough but will have zero impact on cases.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 21:21

@Quaagars i meant likes of costa and b and q etc like last time
Yes people may need emergency bits but last time was click and collect only

Calmandmeasured1 · 10/01/2021 21:21

They could restrict support bubbles to households where there is only adult in it

Be careful what you wish for. Unpaid carers provide £132 billion worth of unpaid care in this country. How do you think the NHS would fare if we all stopped it at midnight tonight. The collapse would be a lot quicker.
I am an unpaid carer myself. There is an exemption to provide care anyway but I may have worded my suggestion incorrectly. I didn't mean support bubbles between two households that only have one adult in each. I meant going back to forming a support bubble where one of the households with a single adult could join with another household of any size. (Doing away with a household being able to form a support bubble where there is a child under 1 year old where there are two adults).

SonjaMorgan · 10/01/2021 21:21

The numbers will continue to rise for now, we have only been in this lockdown for 6 days? No new restrictions will change any of that.

GabsAlot · 10/01/2021 21:21

meeting up with one person as people are still taking the piss

garden centres no need for them right now-coffee shops-curfew maybe

no t5ravelling for exercise

Buzzinwithbez · 10/01/2021 21:21

The good news is that cases have come down over the last four days according to Zoe data. We haven't had time for the latest set of restrictions to show any effect because of the time from catching it to showing symptoms to obtaining a test and results. We should have more of a picture by the end of this week and need to sit tight.
The other thing to bear in mind is that if someone in a family of five catches it, it might take a further few weeks to rattle through their household.

We should also see numbers in the 80+ age bracket coming down soon because of the vaccination.

StormBaby · 10/01/2021 21:21

Workplaces are not closed. Employers are refusing furlough this time

TriSarahTops · 10/01/2021 21:22

If they stop exercise outside the house with one other person I will form an illegal support bubble with my friend and see her indoors away from prying eyes. I’m not prepared to only have DH for company indefinitely (I’ve been WFH since March (as has DH) and I HATE IT SO MUCH. It’s incredibly isolating and slowly destroying my resilience and my mental health. I’ve had months and months of barely any social contact (we’ve been in tier 3 or lockdown since - well, since before tier 3 existed). I can’t cope with reducing my social contact any further.

lljkk · 10/01/2021 21:22

No click and collect -- what?! How can it be better to have people walk around indoors for longer to get their important stuff?

Shutting coffee shops: so nowhere for emergency workers to get a cuppa while on shift. Great idea. I guess thermos's are still sold online.

Surprised no one mentioned closing public toilets!? But then nowhere for emergency workers to go while on shift...

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 21:23

@quaggers also
Garden centres not exactly essential either, at least for a few weeks

Robbybobtail · 10/01/2021 21:23

They’re not listening Lala - they won’t be happy until we are all welded into our homes, wearing a hair shirt and subsisting on cup-a-soups found in the back of the cupboard. As for schools, well they should NEVER go back and yes, get the army in, why not? They should just ride around in tanks mowing anyone down who dares step outside!!

Splodgetastic · 10/01/2021 21:23

I don’t think a curfew will help. It would make things worse. Rather than my walk being at 5am or 9pm I would do it when others are around.
