Tighter restrictions? What else can be "tighter"??

R2221 · 10/01/2021 20:32

Schools closed, work places closed, nailbars, hairdressers, clothes shops, closed. My high street is dead and a couple of big shops are permanently closing down. We've been totally indoors, going out only to get grocery and exercise.

Oh, gyms are closed, no play dates, birthdays, dinners or even coffee with friends. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE SPREAD??? What would "tighter" restrictions mean? To me, next tighter level means no grocery and exercise :(

My local hospital is totally full. I don't understand why.

Tigher restrictions = stay at home. Do not go out.

TheSockMonster · 11/01/2021 14:40

I hear you @trappedsincesundaymorn

Fear limits people’s capacity for empathy.

November’s incredibly half-arsed lockdown managed to bring numbers down. We are facing a different strain now, so may well need additional measures. Hopefully these will be rationally introduced based on actual risk and the people affected properly supported.

It is still way too early to tell though. Lockdown started 5 January. It takes in the region of 4-5 days after transmission to display symptoms, and another 1-2 days for that person to get tested and their results to be processed. So you wouldn’t really expect to see much of an effect until this week anyway.

Amidone · 11/01/2021 14:41

In Wales you cannot travel by car for exercise. You must only walk or cycle from your front door.
You are also not allowed to meet with anyone you don't live with at all e.g. you can't go for a walk with anyone not in your household. Support bubbles are an exception. That's two ways that England might tighten up.

Woolysock · 11/01/2021 15:22

I haven’t read the entire thread but I would suggest all runners wear masks when running. It’s a small ask when many key workers are wearing them all day.

I would also suggest all non essential building works to pause or at least have them wearing masks indoors and out.

rookiemere · 11/01/2021 15:30

@Woolysock no it's actually quite a big ask to make runners wear masks when running. I scarcely run past anyone when I'm out and if I do it's literally 5 seconds when I pass, what benefit will that have for reducing number of infected people - answer very little - but it will put me off running- good for reducing BMI and getting fit - quite a lot.

Do we have any evidence at all that people are getting infected by passing joggers ?

LongDistanceClaret · 11/01/2021 15:31

Woolly - I heard Chris Whitty on the radio this morning saying a fleeting outdoor passing of a jogger is really very low risk, so I disagree with you on that one. People who stand outside and chat pose more risk especially if closer than 2 metres.

No way could I wear a mask while running. Running really helps my asthma as my peak flow has increased hugely but that would certainly make me struggle to breathe. I'm one of the really wheezy sounding asthmatics when it kicks off too, so people tend to panic and rush to be by my side when I have an attack.

Never had an attack while running, but plution, bad air quality and particularly moist, recirculated air are my triggers.

I don't think I've ever heard anything g so idiotic or dangerous.

shinynewapple2021 · 11/01/2021 15:38

Some of these are completely balmy!!

Needing a negative test before you enter a supermarket ?? So people needing to go shopping have to queue up together to get a test before they queue to go to the supermarket?

Likewise a curfew simply means that people doing essential shopping or exercise are having to squash it into fewer hours so more likely coming into contact with other people .

I agree with the poster that more emphasis needs to be made on businesses to prove that it is essential for workers to physically attend if they have a job which was previously done from home in the last lockdown.

Woolysock · 11/01/2021 15:40

I don’t know but if that runner is sweating, panting and coughing as they pass people, I would think just a little droplet is all it takes, anyway like I said I don’t know, it’s a tighter restriction suggestion which is what this thread is about, I have nothing against runners, peace and love to all!

shinynewapple2021 · 11/01/2021 15:44

Oh another idea that was totally daft was a poster suggesting that teenagers caught breaching Covid rules should lose their school or college place ........ surely doing school or college work is to be recommended , giving them an activity for a few hours a day

shinynewapple2021 · 11/01/2021 15:47

@AlphaJura

I've heard talk about them saying you can only leave the house once a week! I don't mind staying in personally but I would really struggle with getting enough food and household supplies in to last that time. All through the last lockdown and this one I've always had to go to the shop at least once a day!

Where did you hear this 'talk'?

I run, no way could I run in a mask and I always move out of the people who stand around chatting on the pavement not moving's way. Also I am a key worker in a school and don't wear a mask then either!
lockeddownandcrazy · 11/01/2021 16:20

Morrisons are going to have stricter mask policies - thank goodness for that!

Might make me change my place of shopping if its strictly no mask no entry

lockeddownandcrazy · 11/01/2021 16:21
  • ie will now change TO morrisons if they are actually going to enforce this
southeastdweller · 11/01/2021 16:24

Surely at Morrisons people can say they’re exempt from wearing masks and they can be allowed in?

Graciebobcat · 11/01/2021 16:26

Teenagers having parties in the woods must be made of tougher stuff than I was at that age. You wouldn't have caught me outside for long when it was -2C. I can barely get mine to come out for a walk.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/01/2021 16:34

Yeah Graciebobcat. That was my thought. My teen whimpers at the first sign of cold and will not set foot outside the house.

Morrison’s have said people will have to wear a mask unless exempt. That’s already policy isn’t it? And there’s still no way to actually police it, no official form (apart from one anyone can download) and no Dr’s note. So what are they saying they’re going to do differently?
TheSunIsStillShining · 11/01/2021 16:35

Had to go to Waitrose today. Many very old ppl with their very old children. The terribly old people (4) didn't have masks on. One was asked to put one on. She replied that she had the 2 doses of vaccine so didn't need one.
This is the problem. People just don't understand.
And the media/gov is making it worse by not communicating properly and clearly.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/01/2021 16:36

She replied that she had the 2 doses of vaccine so didn't need one she probably doesn't to be fair although it's a bit soon.

Can you still spread it if you are vaccinated?

EngineeringFix · 11/01/2021 16:37

Probably.

Vivana · 11/01/2021 16:37

I don't think I can take anymore restriction. I am already tested for covid 3 times a week and had the vaccine and follow all the rules. I can't do anymore.

Woolysock · 11/01/2021 16:39

I wonder what would happen if wearing masks outdoors was made compulsory here. It’s happened in other countries already and it’s been talked about in the news.
What we’ve been doing doesn’t seem to be working, so it’s a matter or time when restrictions whatever they are will get tighter.

I think this is going to potentially be a big problem. My elderley and vulnerable uncle tried to get us to go in his house last week "ive had the vaccine now" when no-one has been inside since march. Er, no uncle - youve had the first jab a week ago, not even had the 2nd one yet and it doesnt actually stop you from getting covid OR prevent you from passing it on to us!"
Really worrying that this hasnt been explained to him.

Given that Chris Whitty said this morning that walking past someone on the street was very low risk, I don’t think it would go over well at all.
