Hi all,

Just after some advice, I went for a walk with my friend for about 25 mins, prob at 1m distance who tested positive the next day. What do you think the chances are of infection?

OP posts:
GrapefruitGin · 10/01/2021 19:22

Op, are you isolating I hope? Test and trace wouldn’t necessarily suggest a test unless symptomatic so I would isolate for 14 days and hope not to experience any symptoms. If you do then of course get tested immediately. Assuming you don’t already get regularly tested that is.

Canneverthinkofagoodusername · 10/01/2021 19:22

There’s a good chance you won’t get it but I would isolate anyway.

I wouldn’t book a test it can take days to get symptoms or show positive on a test. Pointless imo unless you get symptoms.

@LDB1985

Just to offer some reassurance, in October I went for an hours walk with someone who tested positive for Covid 2 days later. We’d sat (outside) on a bench next to each other and she even held my baby Shock. She’d also brought me a coffee and passed it to me. Unless both me and baby were asymptomatic we didn’t get it! We couldn’t access asymptotic testing at the time. Don’t panic like I was, just live and learn, I’ve been much more cautious about who I see and how since. Fingers crossed you’ll be ok!
I appreciate you want to be reassuring, but comparing now (greater number of infected cases with rate of transmission) with October is not particularly relevant.
littlepattilou · 10/01/2021 19:25

@Purplethrow

Why did your friend feel the need for a test? When did they have it? Why were they meeting you if they’d had a test and were awaiting results?
I wondered this too.

Something not quite right here.

TossCointoYerWitcher · 10/01/2021 19:26

@Santaiscovidfree

Ime it's pot luck if you get it after exposure.. My ds tested positive this week. His mate who travelled with him to army camp (allowed) tested negative.. Shared a bucket of kfc and a 6 hour journey... Ds in solitary.. His mate retested still negative.. Bizarre. Ds fuming!! Get a test. You don't need to self isolate unless you have symptoms..
Is it possible his mate might have already had it, so is immune, but not realised?
HollowTalk · 10/01/2021 19:28

Where I live there's testing 7 am - 7 pm without booking an appointment for people without symptoms. Results are available within an hour.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/01/2021 19:28

@SpnBaby1967

It would be sensible to isolate.

But for a comparison, I had covid and being in the east of england was likely the new variant. Shared a bed with my husband the whole time and he never got sick.

Not just sensible, as a close contact the OP must isolate.
Santaiscovidfree · 10/01/2021 19:29

Army testing has been regular so assume he would have had a positive at some point..

Belladonna12 · 10/01/2021 19:30

You were in close contact with someone for 25 minutes so obviously there's a chance you're infected. Haven't test and trace told you to isolate?

You probably were asymptomatic!
OverTheRainbow88 · 10/01/2021 19:33

OPs friend may be having 3 tests a week for her/his job and thus wasn’t expecting a positive result.

If you are tested weekly you don’t have to isolate until results... unless you have symptoms

Nootkah · 10/01/2021 19:33

A close contact is 1m for 1 min or 2m for 25 min isnt it? You are a close contact you need to isolate.

OverTheRainbow88 · 10/01/2021 19:33

@Belladonna12

Even 1/2 the people with covid don’t pass it onto their spouse who they live with... let alone someone they’ve seen outside for a walk

TitsInAbsentia · 10/01/2021 19:35

"..prob at 1m distance"

Given people are awful at estimating distance you probably weren't.

Do you have the NHS tracing app as it should have pinged if so.

How do they know they didn't pass it on? Their spouse may have been asymptomatic. That's probably why Covid has spread so easily. The new variant is extremely infectious.

Please do some research into asymptomatic testing and workplace testing. I had a test last Wednesday morning. After taking,in the test I could have legitimately gone for a walk with a friend, or gone to visit my support bubble in his home. I didn't because I needed to be at work so I spent the morning in an office alone with occasional masked forays into the corridor on my way to kitchen or toilet. I came across a handful of people, all wearing masks.

This was all completely allowed because my test was part of regular asymptomatic testing at my NHS hospital workplace. I did not have symptoms therefore no need to isolate while waiting for results.

JammyGeorge · 10/01/2021 19:39

I have a family friend who caught it off someone he walked with in the same situation so id say there is a chance you could of picked it up.

There's is also a chance you didn't or are asymptomatic.

Purplethrow · 10/01/2021 19:41

@TitsInAbsentia don’t trust the app , I called their helpline today only to be told it’s useless!

greeceiwwhereimdreamingof · 10/01/2021 19:43

I think you isolate because you were 1m away for more than 1 min and even at 2m if its over 15 mins you need to isolate - I think you could get it anytime up to 10 days so little point testing I would have thought early on - wait until towards the end

Purplethrow · 10/01/2021 19:43

Haven't test and trace told you to isolate

Good point- the friend should have given details of those they’ve been in contact with.

🤯 This is the who point. It’s very likely that you were asymptomatic and passed it on. No blame- as you said testing wasn’t available, but that’s why it’s spreading.
DuzzyFuck · 10/01/2021 19:44

There's a chance of course, but couples who share the same bed have managed to avoid passing it between them so it's not guaranteed.

Sofetikal · 10/01/2021 19:45

I spent 3 days with an unwell colleague (who wouldn’t go home) in a non ventilated area without masks and close contact. They later tested positive and I didn’t get it. This was before the new strain though.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 10/01/2021 19:46

@covetingthepreciousthings

Actually, Matt Hancock said this morning that everyone in England will be able to access a test regardless of symptoms (I think from tomorrow).

Isn't this just going to lead to a lot of
people testing instead of isolating?!

Exactly the advice! We are having the lateral flow test at school and this is exactly what’s suggested.
