Walk with friend for 25 mins now tested positive

Hi all,

Just after some advice, I went for a walk with my friend for about 25 mins, prob at 1m distance who tested positive the next day. What do you think the chances are of infection?

High chance. You were likely facing each other and talking etc at some point. Didn’t have a ruler so were most likely less than 1 meter at certain points too though there’s no true “safe” distance as it’s not an exact science. I’d get a test in the next week or so regardless of symptoms.

Ch3rish · 11/01/2021 12:57

@Waspnest

That bmj article was published in August, well before the new variant was identified and well before cases were going through the roof.
It was but as the OP hasn't given us any information about where she lives we don't know how relevant that is. Is there evidence to suggest that the comparative risks are different with the new strain?

Assuming Chris Whitty has been correctly quoted he said today that the new strain is "slightly more dangerous" outside. He comes across as a very measured and possibly pessamistic person so I very much doubt he's understating the situation

lemonsquashie · 11/01/2021 13:04

Please get a test and keep us informed

Palavah · 11/01/2021 13:05

@Catplanter

Quite high I expect. You should have been 2 m and wearing a mask really.
Outside? Where does the guidance say that?!
MrsMiaWallis · 11/01/2021 13:07

Outside? Where does the guidance say that?!

Hands. Face. Space

MrsMiaWallis · 11/01/2021 13:09

Guidelines for outside:

"To stay safe, you should:

take hygiene precautions when you are outside
wash your hands as soon as you are back indoors
keep at least 2 metres apart from anyone outside your household or support bubble where possible, or at least one metre with precautions such as wearing a face mask"

TimeForLunch · 11/01/2021 13:16

Highly unlikely as it was outside and not for very long.

Anecdotally, my ds(10) tested positive at the beginning of last week after showing symptoms. The rest of us have lived with him in very close contact (no distancing) and are all fine. We've also all tested negative.

It's certainly not a given that anyone who is in close contact with someone with the virus will then contract it. Despite how it is portrayed in the media!

Waspnest · 11/01/2021 13:20

I trust CW to be honest about what the scientists do and don't know.

The fact that after he spoke about risks outside he said that 'more importantly' people should avoid unnecessary interactions with people outside their household says to me that he knows it is an inexact science, that the scientists can't give definitive answers to some questions and that so many different factors come into play that it is best to keep it simple. If you don't have those interactions you don't need to think about SD, masks etc. And frankly a significant section of the British public seem to be so thick that I think the simpler the message the better.

crosstalk · 11/01/2021 13:45

Oh dear - the OP posted yesterday - and hasn't come back.

It is difficult if you're walking and talking esp without masks both to stay the requisite distance apart which I understand was 1m outside pre new strain of Covid, 2m outside now. Especially if you're talking, dodging other people, keeping your dog away, pushing a pram.

Does the Track & Trace system work? I've had a couple of phantom messages which disappear before I can open them - a couple of months ago.

So don't do it!

Catplanter · 11/01/2021 13:49

Where does the guidance say that?!

It doesn't have to, it's common sense.

I also can't see any other posts or comments by the OP on any other mumsnet thread. Please do update us on the outcome OP.

Can't get much simpler than Hands Face SPACE and yet loads of people here don't seem to be able to comprehend it.

Dongdingdong · 11/01/2021 16:44

Considering you were outdoors and a metre apart, the chances of you having caught it are slim to none OP. Come back and let us know what the outcome is!

Dongdingdong · 11/01/2021 16:45

Oh dear - the OP posted yesterday - and hasn't come back.

Some people do have lives outside of Mumsnet you know! Not everyone has time to post on here 24/7.

R1234567 · 11/01/2021 17:03

Thanks everyone for the advice.

In hindsight was really silly esp watching the news today. Looks like they are going to ban household mixing outdoors - prob for the best as it is difficult to keep 2m on narrow paths.

Day 5 today - will keep everyone updated.

They aren't.Stop spreading lies

They are, there were endless threads here about how awful it was that they were. Go look and then apologise to the PP

Aloamilk · 11/01/2021 21:55

Where have you seen this please OP?

CoffeeandCroissant · 11/01/2021 23:54

Therefore, outdoor risk is negligible unless it involves close interaction or you are in a crowded or semi-outdoor environment. For example, walking on the street with no f2f contact, or passing by a jogger, the risk is very low as the duration of interaction is brief.

With the new variant, all interactions are higher-risk, but outdoor risk is still relatively low. Most importantly, given very high community prevalence, you are much more likely to encounter someone infected now than a few months ago.

Of course, we still need to show respect to others and their personal space outdoors, even though it’s low risk. But a recurring theme on social media and in the news is shaming people for spending time outside, when really this is one of the safer places.

I read earlier, that some people had now got Covid and ended up in hospital, and they hadn't even been in contact with anyone at all for months, they had stayed home, some lived alone, and not mixed with anyone at all.

I find this very hard to believe...how did they get food and essential shopping? Post etc.
