Familys shopping together

Went to my local Morrisons yesterday and it was crazy, family's of 5 plus shopping together despite the schools closing to prevent spread , groups of people blocking aisles gossiping to each other trying to get past whilst keeping distance. I thought the whole point was to reduce the number of people going into the shops. I heard the staff getting frustrated with the situation. ( single parents of course should shop with dc but this was groups of families, seems like its going to be never ending)

Same here. It’s a joke - they should have bouncers on the door!

squashyhat · 10/01/2021 11:40

Yesterday morning my Sainsburys was far far quieter than a normal Saturday. Yes there were some families but the vast majority were single shoppers.

TheWristBoundLatexBitch · 10/01/2021 11:46

Same in the big Morrison's here yesterday. Even family groups with older teens (13-16 ish!) it was so busy.

LIZS · 10/01/2021 11:53

Sainsburys the same, even though tannoy message asks for people to shop alone Hmm It does not take 2 parents and unhappy toddler (coughing so hard mother took them aside into the clothing area) to do a food shop. Nor should people be ambling around and blocking aisles.

I think closing 'non essentials' drives more people into these places. A lot of people have had enough (people were never going to stick to this way of life indefinitely) and are using them as a break away from staring at the same 4 walls in their homes.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 10/01/2021 11:57

They need to be putting people on the door and have a queuing system
In place again , like in March

True. There were more groups food shopping on the post Xmas Bank Holiday Monday , probably for the sake of something to do.
LIZS · 10/01/2021 11:58

Ours does have someone on the doors. In March they did stop more than one, but seemingly not now.

Pipandmum · 10/01/2021 11:58

They should have the one person per household rule again, though my super tesco was very quiet on Friday.

LubaLuca · 10/01/2021 11:59

My friend works in Morrisons, and she's been dismayed by how many families aren't willing to send one adult to get the food.

Amira19 · 10/01/2021 12:01

Thats the problem people are using them as a day out, its frustrating to see when I'm battling home schooling 3 dc because the schools are shut yet when I go shopping seeing groups of families shopping..I think shops need to adopt a restricter policy even if means a parent sitting in the car with the kids and one go in. I could tell staff were extremely frustrated by it.

I'm disabled and can't push a trolley or bend. I also have severe food allergies. Dh is severely dyslexic and can't read the back of packaging safely. I'm CV so most of the time can get deliveries but on the very rare occasion we can't we both have to go and kids are too young to leave alone so have no option but to bring them as have no childcare.

ChrissyPlummer · 10/01/2021 12:04

The member of staff on my local Pets At Home said the same. The bit where they had the rabbits and small animals is closed with the animals removed but people are taking their kids in to look at the fish and spending up to an hour in there. Ridiculous! There is no need for people to go shopping in groups (single parents and disabilities aside).

LilyPond2 · 10/01/2021 12:40

This is an obvious area where the government could toughen the law and make it a legal requirement for people to shop alone (subject to necessary exemptions, eg single adult households with small children).

Funkypolar · 10/01/2021 12:43

I went to M&S Foodhall with DH yesterday. They allow it.

burnoutbabe · 10/01/2021 12:48

Well as a couple with no car our options is both go or only able to carry back half the stuff and go again.

Or one could stand outside for an hour in the cold maybe?

2 of us together is much quicker anyway as one goes off to grab stuff whilst other browses.

(Small local stores, with a queue one of us waits outside as it's a 5 min wait)

I saw the same yesterday - mum, dad, bored teenager and a child of about eight (no mask) having a happy wander round the shop with a small basket of stuff.
I'm leaving doing my shopping to the evenings to avoid crowds. This family really didn't need to be there all together.

Amira19 · 10/01/2021 12:53

Strawberrypancakes
Surely if her dh drives he should go and she stays with the kids. What was the point in closing all the schools to prevent the biggest spreaders going to the supermarket obviously it can't be helped if they are single parents or disabled. But the rules clearly state stay at home where possible.

anniegun · 10/01/2021 12:54

@Strawberrypancakes

What’s the actual rules on this though? A friend of mine doesn’t drive but hadn’t left the house for days so went with her DH and had to take the kids. That seems fine to me.
Is her DH not capable to shop?
Pastanred · 10/01/2021 12:54

there's no rules against it so people can go as family if they want

the fear has gone for most - you can no longer compare to March, we are in a totally different situation now

Chewbecca · 10/01/2021 12:54

I noticed this yesterday too, a couple having long discussions in each section about what they fancied eating this week and whether they preferred one product over another. No list, no prior thought, just cluttering up the aisles. Grrr.

Amira19 · 10/01/2021 12:58

Pastanred its advised by government to stay home. The numbers are worse than March especially with this new strain. The whole point in closing schools is to reduce the spread so why does a full family need to shop together. Its going to be never ending.

Funkypolar · 10/01/2021 12:58

Just weld them into their homes and get the army out with ration packs.

Robbybobtail · 10/01/2021 12:59

Because people are looking for something to do now everything is closed, it was obviously going to happen. Maybe take note of the amount of people who actually ARE shopping alone though and stop looking for things to get frothy about? Most people are being sensible, there will always be those who dont care as much as they dont feel it affects them. I cant get worked up about it tbh.
