Why are takeaways the new target?

Not a TAAT but I've noticed a few people seeming quite sure that takeaways will be the next to close. Why have they become the new target? As far as I'm aware they haven't been linked to high transmissions. They're the only way a lot of restaurants and cafes have been able to survive. I admit I have a vested interest as I'm delivering takeaway to pick up some extra money.

Is this actually likely?

It's the target because many middle class twats think they're the preserve of working class people and think it's such people who should be punished while they should be allowed to do what they want.

Along with parks and public playgrounds

The vocal advocates for closing takeaways probably don’t use them much (and certainly don’t work in then). Just like the vocal advocates for closing schools tended to be people without school aged children. They think someone else should give something up, but that they should be allowed to keep doing everything they currently do.

SendMeHome · 09/01/2021 22:40

Everyone wants the next change to be something that doesn’t affect them, mostly.

It’s a strange balance of acknowledging that this doesn’t seem to be enough, now that more people are bending the rules, and already feeling so close to the edge that further restrictions that have a direct impact are unthinkable... so the solutions produced have a big bias towards things that don’t impact on them.

Bimbleboo · 09/01/2021 22:40

I think that people are usually meaning places like Costa etc who are classed as takeaway, but obviously means in lots of areas there’s massive queues of people piling in to buy coffee.

That’s what I’ve seen people mostly referring to anyway. Rightly or wrongly Confused. I’d probably agree they are encouraging people to go out/ go further and stay out pottering/meeting people more than is ‘essential’ and at this point we really REALLY need to buckle down a bit more than many are doing ... but maybe I’m a monster Blush

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 09/01/2021 22:40

There is a certain cohort on here who won’t be happy until we are all welded into our homes, their latest target is takeaways, try not to let it worry you, I can’t see Boris banning them, I don’t expect he takes advice from randoms on mumsnet fortunately.

Gandalf456 · 09/01/2021 22:41

Bunch of killjoys, the lot of them

Bimbleboo · 09/01/2021 22:43

And I definitely agree @SendMeHome people do want the next restrictions to be on things that don’t impact them personally.

Although in this case, I don’t think we need to have Costa etc open encouraging people to congregate more queueing for them but I REALLY REALLY miss coffee shops personally. One of the things I miss most actually!

But I’m not currently using them so maybe that IS why I don’t mind the idea of them not being open.

Bluesmartiesandpandapop · 09/01/2021 22:44

Because they can't outright ban pleasure and fun so they have to ban everything else instead?!

PicsInRed · 09/01/2021 22:45

Because fun, novelty and joy spread covid and must therefore be stamped out mercilessly.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 09/01/2021 22:46

We have a takeaway on a weekend , but for the time being have stopped - our local ones previously did a one in one out System
But that seems to
Have stopped , lots of people in my town very lapse on social distancing, so people queue but close together . We are in an area where cases were relatively low but as with the rest of the country have now sky rocketed . The cases and deaths are so high, I think places like this do need to be closed for a few weeks .

LittleRen · 09/01/2021 22:46

I do get it. We live in a gorgeous seaside village that people flock to... we ventured out today for the first time in a week, the crowds of people outside coffee shops with a coffee chatting was unreal. It's a very nice area - and fancy restaurants have become outdoor bbq places, buy a burger and hang around outside on the benches.

I think takeaways that deliver should stay, but takeaway coffees etc need to go... and I am a true fan of coffee shops and spend a lot of time there.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 09/01/2021 22:47

Takeaways just need to have their menus printed like eye charts.

ParisJeTAime · 09/01/2021 22:47

I don't think it's a class thing. Nobody is eating out in naice restaurants. Nobody can do anything with their kids other than the parks and playgrounds. Middle class people don't have anything else to do either!

I have also seen them mentioned on here and part of me is gutted, but then, I remember I don't really use them. But it is just another treat thing being taken away from people and also income for a struggling hospitality industry. I think it would be nuts to close them without solid evidence they are not safe.

Chillypenguin · 09/01/2021 22:47

Because some people seem to think that Covid is spread by small pleasures, rather actual risk assessments.

Is someone doing something they like? Outrageous, it’s a pandemic don’t you know.

Some people won’t be happy until we’re all in our houses with ration cards and 1 person from the house is allowed out once a fortnight to buy milk, pasta, rice and loo rolls.

StartingGrid · 09/01/2021 22:49

I do actually know of a person who is now self isolating from a track and trace notification after collecting a meal.. hopefully they are a rarity as I would hate to have to cook

movingonup20 · 09/01/2021 22:51

There was a 20+ queue outside for Costa today despite the temperature barely breaking freezing. I think that's the target, telephone orders/click and collect isn't the issue

atomt · 09/01/2021 22:51

There's been a lot of talk in my local FB groups about some Uber drivers now trying to get the council to take action to enforce the rules as lots of Uber drivers in particular are gathering at chain restaurants all waiting to pick up orders, indoors, no masks and no social distancing and then delivering to customers again with no masks, not washing hands etc.

Reading some of the accounts made me want to stop ordering for now as I'm in London and the thought that the drivers are really not taking care at all puts me off. Until now I used to think it was fairly safe.

Againstmachine · 09/01/2021 22:53

Because eventually you run out of places left to close.

FelineUK · 09/01/2021 22:55

And I thought garden centres were getting the brunt! ;-)

Though I think when people say 'garden centres' they're referring to DIY stores eg B&Q, Homebase etc.

😂🤣

Quaagars · 09/01/2021 23:08

I've seen this a lot over the past few days on here and social media in general.
People complaining about "how is McDonalds essential?!" "Why do you need a take out coffee?!"
or whatever
How is it not essential - if you think about it instead of going straight into whingy judgy pants mode, what about people on the road driving, need a quick takeaway meal?
McDonalds and Costas are on many a motorway route, for example and usually the only type of things there for you to get.
Plus, it's food?!
Or are you only allowed to get food if it's from "worthy" places? whatever that means

Quaagars · 09/01/2021 23:12

Some people won’t be happy until we’re all in our houses with ration cards and 1 person from the house is allowed out once a fortnight to buy milk, pasta, rice and loo rolls

Agree
I've been sticking to the rules all the way through and will continue to do so, but even I'm tuning out now to some of the "stay the fuck at home" posters who say to people doing nothing wrong that they're practically killing their Granny and everyone else's Granny by buying a takeaway and going to collect it, or going to the shops more than once a week.
So Gawd knows what people who don't give a shit and never have are thinking, making up rules that don't exist to fit what you (general you) want to happen helps no-one

corythatwas · 09/01/2021 23:13

This. The attitude of my local Pret towards infection limitation seems very lackadaisical but I don't see why that should affect a McDonald's or KFC who have gone to the trouble of organising drive-through and other ways of keeping customers safe. Or a Chinese restaurant that delivers.

Mylittlesandwich · 09/01/2021 23:22

I can see why some areas would have issues with Costa etc if people were queuing. My experience is 2/3 socially distanced, mask wearing drivers delivering. Some customers collecting but again socially distanced and masks enforced. Everyone orders in advance and literally just collects.
