Why are takeaways the new target?

Not a TAAT but I've noticed a few people seeming quite sure that takeaways will be the next to close. Why have they become the new target? As far as I'm aware they haven't been linked to high transmissions. They're the only way a lot of restaurants and cafes have been able to survive. I admit I have a vested interest as I'm delivering takeaway to pick up some extra money.

Is this actually likely?

Perhaps it’s the working conditions of those making the take aways ?

Waspnest · 09/01/2021 23:56

McDonalds do do "proper meals" though.

I think it's more about whether people are likely to linger around with friends to eat/ drink rather than what they're serving. You're less likely to order a Chinese meal and stand around on the street eating it.

So I'd support McD's staying open for drive through (with no car parking) but I think places selling hot drinks for takeaway should be shut because people seem to just be using them as an excuse to meet up with a friend. The Indian/Chinese restaurants hand takeaway food to you outside round here so I'm not sure they're particularly risky.

Was it not Nichola sturgeon that mentioned “scaling back” take away services in Scotland? I might be wrong but I thought that’s what she was on about last week

Tempnamelady · 09/01/2021 23:58

We’ve got people on local f book page whingeing about people taking kids to the park. I’m just over It and I don’t even have young kids x

What about the working conditions of your online shopping orders? Or the nice Thai takeaway?

She's been on about a lot of stuff, most of us up here just ignore her. She also has a wee bee in her bonnet about click and collect.

Funny how she always comes out with something controversial when there are more claims made about her, or her predecessor, or both, lying through their teeth.

So the only thing they're actually the target of is unfounded speculation by a few people you know?

QuantumQuality · 10/01/2021 00:06

I think takeaways are a class issue in the opposite way to that which earlier posters suggested. Middle class people sit at home and get someone else to deliver their meal. Working class people are busy working in kitchens with poor air circulation and limited social distancing. The concern about Covid transmission is for the workers, not the customers.

I’ve been feeling a bit guilty about it because we like getting food delivered, but other people are taking risks for us to do that. But of course those people want to keep their jobs, so I can’t decide whether it’s good or bad to get takeaway!

TheGriffle · 10/01/2021 00:12

@Lougle We’ve not even been locked down a week yet so of course the figures are showing fuck all results from it. Give it bloody chance!

Tenyearsgone · 10/01/2021 00:15

I suppose it depends what sort of takeaway you get. A McDonalds takeaway is bad. A nice Thai takeaway or Cook meal , fuck the workers.

No it was a few comments on a few covid threads on MN actually.

I'm quite sure they'd rather be employed than unemployed. Don't feel bad.

Coffee takeaway is not going to be a worrying driver of transmissionHmm If people are queuing outside and wearing masks inside, the risk is miniscule. The R number relates to the number of people that the average infected person infects. So the average person doesn't even infect 2 others as things stand. The likelihood of therefore being the one person infected by even an infected person in Starbucks is vanishingly small. People need to calm down and stop calling for the cessation of food and drink sales from particular types of venues because they don't personally think it's essential. What about older people/ vulnerable people who don't really cook for themselves? Takeaway sandwiches and things like that keep them going. What next? Banning the sale of non-essential food in Asda? Crisps roped off? What's the difference. I despair at the hysteria of some people calling for coffee sales to endConfused

fireearthwaterair · 10/01/2021 00:20

It’s the working conditions and the workers that need consideration too.

I worked at Domino’s Pizza when the first lockdown started. Social distancing just wasn’t possible as the kitchen areas are tiny but lots of staff needed (lockdown obviously increased sales and we were extremely busy) so I was constantly working shoulder to shoulder with multiple people just so people could have a takeaway pizza. I posted a thread about it at the time and the vast majority of responses were posters glad they could still enjoy a takeaway, contrasted starkly with other threads at the same point (last March or early April time) where posters slated people for doing their daily exercise twice.

I agree with PP it’s more the other way round with the class issue, many are happy to stay at home and feel good for sticking to rules whilst enjoying unnecessary takeaways with no regard for those working there.

hayleysmiles · 10/01/2021 00:23

Many are allowing people to come in and wait for their food en masse, as well as use the toilets.

If they can't follow the rules, then all suffer, sadly

RedMarauder · 10/01/2021 00:23

@RaspberryCoulis she's been talking to Mark Drakeford.

MutantNinjaCovid · 10/01/2021 00:25

Coffee takeaway is not going to be a worrying driver of transmission

It is not just the customers but the staff. Working in a small area. Travelling by public transport to get to work. The council refuse workers who are out picking up the discarded cups today , they have to travel to work as well.

Using the loo in Starbucks?
There was a big queue last weekend for that.

The lorry drivers delivering the coffee, the people in the factory processing the food.

You can't just say it is the people queuing- it is the chain of events around that.

earsup · 10/01/2021 00:26

A few places near us are open...staff rarely have face masks on..plus some attract a big queue etc...I don't think a take away coffee is essential....I fail to see the attraction....paying maybe £3.50 for a small latte...or frappacino or what ever they are called !!

frasersmummy · 10/01/2021 00:29

I think it's being talked about because Nicola Sturgeon has takeaways and click and collect in her sights now..as they are encouraging people to be out their homes.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/01/2021 00:30

Because all those cars spiraling around a McDonalds or Costa drive-thru are expelling vast quantities of virus through their exhausts and killing grannies Wink

Not really so noble to demand people in low income jobs are made redundant or put on reduced incomes to save them from themselves.

Many that there are a lot of sanctimonious fuckers out there who wouldn't know joy because they've spent too long grazing on lettuce leaves and lentils.

We need as many businesses viable as possible because the NHS does not fund itself.

The workers having a job, or what ever it's called.
lljkk · 10/01/2021 00:31

er...

so "everyone" stays home -- waiting for things to be delivered.
Which means we'll need more delivery drivers.
Except the delivery drivers aren't allowed any hot meals or food while at work.

Unless someone ELSE delivers it to the driver, maybe??

Sure, whatevs.

Tenyearsgone · 10/01/2021 00:33

Always the lowest paid on MN who are to blame. It's fucking sickening.

RedMarauder · 10/01/2021 00:36

@Snowrabbit Not every coffee shop is forced to make everyone queue outside.

I noticed in my area the independents now don't allow anyone in, while Pret has people queuing inside socially distance with most wearing masks. Interestingly everyone I saw buying coffee from the independents through their doorways was wearing a mask as they approached the table in the doorway, but not everyone inside Pret was.

I couldn't see in Starbucks or Costa as the ones that directly open onto the road were closed.

StatisticalSense · 10/01/2021 00:37

@lljkk
Not just delivery drivers. You regularly see on shift emergency service workers queuing in the local takeaways (yes even at the minute).
