Why are takeaways the new target?

134 replies

Not a TAAT but I've noticed a few people seeming quite sure that takeaways will be the next to close. Why have they become the new target? As far as I'm aware they haven't been linked to high transmissions. They're the only way a lot of restaurants and cafes have been able to survive. I admit I have a vested interest as I'm delivering takeaway to pick up some extra money.

Is this actually likely?

For some people a takeaway meal is the only hot meal they can access. When my friend was living in a shitty hotel room with her young child due to being made homeless by her violent ex, she relied on takeaway food so they could have something warm to eat. Our local takeaways also provide hot meals for homeless people.

People need to look beyond their own experiences and understand not everybody has the luxury of being able to cook in their own home,

I agree, I support a food project and throughout lockdown 1 it was a real issue. The numbers being fed went up massively as there was little food in the shops and most takeaways/restaurants were closed.

But that is not the £6 artisan coffee crowd who were hugging each other earlier. They had a choice to be out.

IfTheSockFits · 10/01/2021 01:08

@Viviennemary

I think McDonald's and the coffee shops should be closed. Takeaways doing proper meals should stay open.,
Where do you draw the line? If you think a McDonald's isn't a proper meal, where do you draw the line? A kebab? A pizza maybe? Fish & chips? Fried chicken? Are they what you consider to be a proper meal or not?
MutantNinjaCovid · 10/01/2021 01:14

McDonalds is closed for takeaways. Drive through and McDelivery options only.

HSHorror · 10/01/2021 01:32

They thought 1/30 infected in london so yes likely there are probably say 100 customers in a coffee shop a day then 3 infected.
Or think about 1/30 of say costa staff infected
Even where we have 1/135 its maybe 1 a day.

It's the same with schools, if we have 150 kis in so much more likely one infected than just 10. And youve got many staff in too.

Some people won't be happy until every single one of life's little pleasures are removed and half the population is suicidal.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 10/01/2021 08:35

@lljkk

er...

so "everyone" stays home -- waiting for things to be delivered.
Which means we'll need more delivery drivers.
Except the delivery drivers aren't allowed any hot meals or food while at work.

Unless someone ELSE delivers it to the driver, maybe??

Sure, whatevs.

That’s the whole point of them opening though! It’s Stay at Home unless it’s essential

Delivery drivers, emergency services, lorry drivers - people working who need to eat and drink on the go might need to use them.

Not because you are meeting a friend for a walk, or you’re having a browse round town.

southeastdweller · 10/01/2021 08:39

I have a takeaway coffee every day but I expect the government to ban all takeaways soon as they want to be seen as getting tough - after all they can’t really enforce the ‘stay home’ crap and they know it.

EmmanuelleMakro · 10/01/2021 08:40

There is a certain cohort on here who won’t be happy until we are all welded into our homes, their latest target is takeaways, try not to let it worry you, I can’t see Boris banning them, I don’t expect he takes advice from randoms on mumsnet fortunately

@Tempnamelady

We’ve got people on local f book page whingeing about people taking kids to the park. I’m just over It and I don’t even have young kids x
Yeah it's just so bloody sad. Took my kids to the local park and was questioned by a bouncer on arrival! I was allowed in because we were local but plenty of others with small children were turned away. Many businesses round us are surviving by the skin of their teeth doing takeaway and delivery. These are not causing infection. Leave them alone.

I agree and it scares me to think how many people probably genuinely are by now.
peak2021 · 10/01/2021 08:50

I'd limit hours of opening though, shut earlier in the evening than now. Removes a reason for travelling in the evening, for people who are not going there but to another person's house.

loulouljh · 10/01/2021 08:51

Another part of the economy to collapse then...

loulouljh · 10/01/2021 08:52

And you are right..some people seem to want to have everyone locked into their house with zero pleasure. Presumably they have pretty miserable lives themselves and want everyone else to join them!

HoppingOnSteppingStones · 10/01/2021 08:54

We visited our local large park. There's a cafe there. The park was so busy. The queue for the cafe hot drinks with out exaggeration probably had 30 people in it. Not SD because of the lay out it would be impossible to without getting hit by a swing.
I have never seen the cafe that Busy in the summer. Maybe 10 people max.

MadameBlobby · 10/01/2021 08:58

Anyway I’m going for a Mc’s breakfast now. On my way to do the essential shop.

BlueBaubles12 · 10/01/2021 08:59

They’re the latest target because all the zealots need another sector of the economy to throw under the bus. They’ve pretty much done for the pub sector now, that ain’t ever coming back, so takeaways are the latest obsession.

MadameBlobby · 10/01/2021 08:59

I’m guessing at other times other places are open, now they aren’t
hopeishere · 10/01/2021 09:04

Someone I know was telling me that in the local McDs 10+ of the staff tested positive. No way can you social distance in a confined space like that. Similarly he works delivering food and he says several of the other drivers had tested positive. If they are all waiting to collect the deliveries in a small space then infection can pass.

userxx · 10/01/2021 09:07

@loulouljh

Another part of the economy to collapse then...

Yep. Fucking depressing isn't it.

famousforwrongreason · 10/01/2021 09:08

I have disabilities, single mum, no family support, fatigue, massive pain levels, working throughout covid, now back to home schooling again, massively anxious and depressed, and on the verge of falling apart.
I can't afford regular take aways but honestly, this past year, they have been a godsend and on many days takeaways have been the only way I've been able to feed myself and my kids.

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2021 09:12

They won't close. The hospitality industry is being decimated and every pound from a takeaway sale, not to mention the drivers that are employed, is desperately needed.

People are understandably sick and tired of the situation. Resilience is low and we all have some very difficult weeks ahead. People often are happy to vote to close things they don't use themselves and won't be affected by.

lockeddownandcrazy · 10/01/2021 09:23

"I think takeaways that deliver should stay, but takeaway coffees etc need to go... and I am a true fan of coffee shops and spend a lot of time there."

How is that ok for people who don't live in a delivery area? Delivery drivers out on the road are not likely to be washing hands much either.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/01/2021 09:28

If you’re talking Costa, Starbucks etc., probably because the queues outside - around here anyway - are largely composed of people who’ve apparently never heard of social distancing. Also largely composed of people young enough to very likely be asymptomatic and thus go spreading it around without any idea that they have it.

BeakyWinder · 10/01/2021 09:30

The coronavirus board is getting more extreme by the day, some of the views held on there are terrifying. Some posters have decided takeaways are too risky and therefore should be banned, aka I don't want takeaway so noone else can have one either.
