How are people still catching the virus?

Numbers are still so high, are people catching it from supermarkets? Does 2 metres apart still stop you catching it? Are you still pretty safe outside if you stay at least 2 metres apart?

@Angrymum22

DS’s school had one case in the whole of last term. There were a few who had to self isolate due to contacts out of school. There were 3 positive cases just after the end of term but as they finished on a Wednesday it was probably due to shopping trips the weekend before rather than school. School has done lateral flow tests last week for all staff and pupils in school, over 200 in total and no positives. It is a town centre independent school with many pupils travelling via bus or train. Either the kids are very good at staying safe which is highly unlikely, or transmission in schools is not as high as people think. The trouble is in some schools the bubbles are very large, one positive test will close down a whole year, several staff isolating is a safeguarding issue and will close a whole school without a positive case. Schools closing for self isolation does not mean that infection rates are high in that school. They are just following the rules.
pft you could give a lft to someone on their death bed with covid and likely get a negative.

Why do people want to believe bullshit like schools don't have covid spread? Just look at the stats rather than your personal anecdotes.

Angrymum22 · 10/01/2021 17:29

Just to reassure everyone the laxness is in protecting ourselves not in the patients.

MonthofSunnydays · 10/01/2021 17:31

People will still be catching it from others who caught it over Christmas / New year break. If it takes 2 weeks to come out from new year and those people are walking around symptom free for up to 2 weeks, they have potential to spread it to other family members, friends and colleagues until the 14th January - still a few days away. Now that we are all locked in with our families, those that are living with silent carriers could potentially get it. It’s going to take around 2-3 weeks from proper lockdown before we start seeing any significant decrease in numbers getting infected and a further 2-3 weeks (if people stick to the rules) before we return to much lower numbers. Hospital admissions could potentially rise for the next 6 weeks because in a lot of cases it takes a couple of weeks for people to get to the point of needing hospital.

Marmite2021 · 10/01/2021 17:36

I could be wrong, but up until recently a covid “case” was a positive test WITH at least one covid symptom. This is also the definition of covid case used in the Pfizer trial. These days a positive test alone is counted as a case. Perhaps the trial results would have been very different had they based their results on positive tests alone.

I was in ICU for 37 days last July (a heart replacement valve which went wrong and left me with lung damage. (Only 25% capacity at present). So need to be super careful! We get only deliveries and wash everything down with bleach-water, remove packaging and discard before putting away. It takes ages but so far...
I always wear a mask when out (for a walk only) despite finding it hard to breathe with it. I don't say, 'I'm excused' as it is too important not to, both for myself and others. We must all join together to beat this, not try to get round the rules, we're not babies. The ICU staff were total saints but nearly dying is not recommended!!!

Arnoldthecat · 10/01/2021 17:38

Is my logic flawed or shouldnt they be prioritising the vaccine for people who are key workers because they are the potential spreaders. Kill the acquisition and spread and it should disrupt the virus.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/01/2021 17:38

Yep plus most primary school children were forced to go and mix germs in school for a day after all that Christmas and New Year's mixing on the 4th.

Realistically it's at least the 18th Jan before we can see the end of schools and Christmas driven infections and everyone needs to remember schools are still open and in some cases with lots of children so schools contribution will hopefully slow down but it's not going to stop.

The kw kids are also more likely to have covid to bring into school given they're living with people who are on the front line (talking proper kw not the ever spreading definition) such as carers, teachers, nurses, supermarket workers etc. There will still be covid coming in and going out of schools but hopefully not the flood it was before.

csigeek · 10/01/2021 17:41

People are not staying 2 metres apart.
People are not sticking to the rules.
People are not even making sure they understand the rules let alone bothering to try and adhere to them.
Some people still think it’s a hoax.

Our local morgue is full. 16 bodies were sent in before 10am this morning.

ICU is full.
There are no free beds.
Even if there are no more Covid cases the hospital can’t take any more patients for anything, so if you have a heart attack you’re screwed.
This is what the nay sayers are not thinking about, “oh I won’t catch it or if I do I’ll be fine”...but what if you have an accident or anything else? There is no room to treat you.

People are fed up with lockdowns and I get that but the less people bother with it the longer this is going to continue.

CaptainNelson · 10/01/2021 17:42

My DC (if their test comes back positive) seems to have caught it through work in a retail store on NYE. Someone close to our family caught it through hospital (and was sent home despite testing positive).

jwpetal · 10/01/2021 17:43

My friend is a plumber and had to do emergency boiler work. Got the call 2 days later that the family were positive with covid. they were feeling a bit off, but hadn't told friend. Anyway, the whole family got it (6of them). They got tested before any signs and 2 were positive and that spread to all 6. It is very contagious.

Yes your logic is flawed, because the vaccine has been designed to reduce severity of disease in individuals but does not prevent spread.

herecomesthsun · 10/01/2021 17:50

@MrPickles73

abraxan data from Sweden suggests keeping schools open gave no higher transmission rate. All I have seen is anecdotal evidence in UK. Of the people I know who've caught it: 1 x working in hospital 1 x at work 2 x unknown but don't have any contact with school aged kids

We have 2 school aged kids and hence know loads of families and yet to have an example of child bringing COVID home from school. Would like to see evidence on this theory.

On the other hand, from the Telegraph, Switzerland's decision to close schools was one of most effective measures of reducing Covid spread, study says.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/10/switzerlands-decision-close-schools-spring-one-effective-measures/

There is a lot of information about to support this, you know.

whenwillthemadnessend · 10/01/2021 17:55

It's obvious high numbers spreading though families due to schools and then breaking Xmas rules also an element of breaking new year rules. The timings are spot on.

Plus added pressure if some still working in factories clinics healthcare etc.

caringcarer · 10/01/2021 17:56
  1. A third of people who have it are apparently asymptomatic so don't know they have it so go about daily life. 2. You just have to read a few posts on here ' I'd it ok to drivey child 8 miles each way to meet a friend to walk in a park. The rules state don't go out unless necessary. Stay local so if you can walk there it counts as local but don't drive around without need. This patent must have known against rules but was going to do what her dd wanted rather than say no to her. 3. More people are in workplace this lockdown than in first lockdown when more were furloughed. 4. Places of worship, childcare nurseries and several other things open this time but locked down shut in first lockdown. 5. So many people have got lockdown fatigue and now just go out against rules as they just don't care unless they are caught and fined. Take the 2 women driving 5 miles to a resovoir and going via takeaway coffee, crossing over broader to meet up. They should have done a Teams chat online and walking on their own with no need to drive. I hope selfish idiots go get fined. Only way to stop them.
Jrobhatch29 · 10/01/2021 17:59

I am pretty covid relaxed (but we follow all the rules) and even I am pissed off today. Walked round to SIL house to see our niece at the front door as its her 1st birthday. As we were walking down the street we saw their friends leaving the house. We then realised that both sets of grandparents were in there as well. They were annoyed at us for not going in. As we left another set of friends pulled up and walked straight in. To add to this, SIL is a social worker working with children with disabilities and still has to make home visits. Pretty sure shit like this doesn't help the spread.

To add to this, my aunty who is a paid carer for my 83 yo CEV dialysis patient nanna has decided this would be a good time to have a minor routine op on her hand and there is nobody to take on this role but me. I will have to drive her to dialysis three times a week with my kids in the car. My DP works in a factory where it is rife. I feel like this won't go well 😭😭 sorry for the rant!

DrSK2 · 10/01/2021 18:00

I am an academic and the uni I work at sent template letters to all staff that can be used to be classified as critical worker in order to send their children to school. None of the uni jobs are in fact key worker positions. Many organisations are encouraging their staff to fob their children off to schools so they could work fully. I think the greedy corporations and organisations also have a part to play in the spread of the virus. They are beating around the law and breach the lockdown rules by using the law itself. How disgusting...

hoodathunkit · 10/01/2021 18:02

Where I live the busses are quite busy with elderly people and other vulnerable adults using bus passes to enjoy journeys outside.

I have asked the bus drivers about it and they are upset and angry.

People get on the bus with a mask, go upstairs or to the back of the bus and pull their mask down and scoff crisps, or other food items.

I am no longer travelling on the bus but did just before the latest lockdown. Got screamed at by women who wore masks under their chins while having a loud, screechy conversation.

"Mind your own fucking business", "who are you the mask police?" "OK Karen" etc. etc.

The drivers are not allowed to challenge them so they just carry on travelling on non-essential journeys are are likely to do so until they get fined by the cops.

Depressing

Frazzledstar1 · 10/01/2021 18:08

Unfortunately too many people are not sticking to the rules xx

Gilld69 · 10/01/2021 18:10

a friends husband has tested positive he hasnt left the house since 23 dec wife only goes to supermarket amd back and only when needed and is very careful, they are shocked how this has happend

Owl55 · 10/01/2021 18:11

Every child going in to school may have 1-3 people in their family , dropped off by one parent , possibly collected by grandparents as their parents are working , grandparent may live with a partner . School staff have families , children mix with mid day assistants / kitchen staff at lunchtime , PE with outside agency staff , maybe up to 15 children in each class ! That is a huge number of people and children mixing / interacting with each child even if they are in “a bubble” Stay home if possible please

CowCuddler · 10/01/2021 18:13

I either got it at work (preschool) or Supermarket. The only two places I went for two weeks before I got it.
No one else at work got it so not convinced it was there.

Yorkshiretolondon · 10/01/2021 18:16

@Baileysforchristmas

I thought all schools are closed accept for key workers?
Esteemed gavin w made the keyworker list so long and only needs to be one parent some are sending in their kids even if a parent is at home......
Porcupineintherough · 10/01/2021 18:32

There's no data available because no one is collecting it @angrysquirrel73, not because it isnt happening.

Benjispruce2 · 10/01/2021 18:33

@CowCuddler when you say nobody else got it, they may have been asymptomatic. 1/3 of cases are.

Benjispruce2 · 10/01/2021 18:35

@Gilld69 his wife probably was a dump and gave it to her husband.
