To think vaccinations should be 24/7

I have become quite agitated by the speed of our vaccination program compared to the speed of transmission of the new variant. I read the plan is to vaccinate 8am to 8pm. But given the emergency that sounds to me like a firefighter putting out flames 8am-8pm. It’s not enough is it?

I have relatives in NHS hospitals who already work shifts 24/7 who would be entirely willing to do overtime or even volunteer their time for free to administer vaccines 24/7.

Currently these NHS relatives are unable to get their services taken up by any vaccination service.

benedicto · 10/01/2021 15:52

The GP vaccination scheme in my area stopped from just before Christmas until 4 January, although the hospital vaccinations did not and carried on continuously.

That’s my point, that when people say to use an online booking system that it’s not that simple, there’s a much higher success rate booking on the phone but only if people answer/understand what we are saying/take an available appointment.

@jollyunicorn83

In our area they were vaccinating Xmas day and Boxing Day. What 80 year old is going to drive somewhere in the middle of the night for a jab? It's not safe to ask people to do that
It’s not safe at all. With the bad weather as a young person I’ve gone flying twice and that was from my door to the car. Nonsense talking just creating more accidents and more patients in A&E.
m0therofdragons · 10/01/2021 15:59

The plan is more centres opening rather than extending through the night. Giving people more local options would be a priority over 24/7 vaccinating. No idea why you think the roll out is slow. It’s immense and mass vacc clinics opening in stages in a controlled and manageable way.

willowstar · 10/01/2021 16:06

I am just finishing up my vaccinator training before I start next week. I would happily work extended hours so long as trains are running, I can sort out childcare and we are safe. There are security guards outside the vaccination centre as there have been anti vax protests in other area. Mind blowing really.

Mrs moggy, isn't it the very elderly being targeted at the moment? In which case of course they won't know how to use the Internet!
How very rude with your "of course"; many "elderly" aren't incapable. My late 70s relatives and in laws all use the internet for food shopping, news, zoom calls, email etc. The only one who couldn't use computers a few years ago did the free library courses to learn. My Nana used to email me often when I was working abroad over a decade ago; sadly dead now but she was in her 80s at the time.

Here, educate yourself: www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/itandinternetindustry/bulletins/internetusers/2019
"recent internet use in the 65 to 74 years age group increased from 52% in 2011 to 83% in 2019, closing the gap on younger age groups"; then it's 46.8% age 75+ (and remember those in a care home are less likely to say yes).
Those stats are "recent" internet use, ownership and ability to use a computer is even higher.

It's nothing to do with the times people are available do vaccinate but the actual stock and delivery of the vaccine, they aren't Being delivered in huge supply as quick as people may think x

notevenat20 · 10/01/2021 16:14

@reginafalange2020

Do you know anywhere you can find facts about how much Oxford and Pfizer we have ready to be delivered?

Sorry I don't Know, I think each area are delivering different amounts based on elderly population etc. I live in a fairly rural area and we have so far vaccinated 1000 over 85yr olds, and then carers and care homes (all Pfizer) since mid dec.

we had our first delivery of 100 Oxford vaccines this week.

Jinglealltheway22 · 10/01/2021 17:13

I think Boris said that we had 530,000 Oxford and 1,000,000 Pfizer last week,

Oxford are scaling that up so by mid Jan it's 2,000,000 a week, from Oxford alone.

Assuming Pfizer continue to supply 1,000,000 per week that will be3,000,000 by the beginning of next week.

Fingers crossed they achieve it.

That sounds good

I thought there was uncertainty about the next delivery of pfizer vaccines.

MRex · 10/01/2021 17:36

Doubtful surely, with all the other delays.

MrsFezziwig · 10/01/2021 22:08

Some, like the death of Miami doctor was already in msm. And I read about Portuguese health worker this morning but there’s quite a few more I didn’t know about
Also a £120k one off compensation payment won’t touch the sides for anyone left with a serious disability
I’ll see if I can pm it to you

@Dowser why just send the link as a pm? Surely if you have real concerns you would want to publicise the links actually on the thread? Otherwise you’re just scaremongering.

Blessex · 10/01/2021 22:45

@Dowser. My friends father knows the Miami doctor and they are still investigating his death. And the Portuguese lady died through other causes than the vaccine.

88% percent said yes to the question "Would you Accept a very late night appt to get vaccine"?
