Why do people not realise that this behaviour also puts massive strain on the NHS?

Running/jogging on icy pavements
Non essential journeys in the car on snowy/icy roads
'but we' re allowed out to exercise'
Careering down really steep hills on sledges. Facebook and WhatsApp full of this. Activity of choice in lockdown it seems.

I'm so sick of people not realising the potential harm they could be doing to already massively under pressure hospitals.

Feel so sorry for nhs doctors and nurses and hcps. Take your busiest day at work and multiple it by 100 and then throw in the mix that people's lives are in their hands- probably still not even close to the stress they are under.

I totally despair.

You can't blame people for trying to make the best of a bad situation, mental health services will also be overstretched if people are forced to stay inside indefinitely.

Lemonpiano · 08/01/2021 20:26

I feel sorry for patients.

BlueBaubles12 · 08/01/2021 20:27

You’re right. In fact I’m going to sleep on the sofa and wee in the kitchen sink tonight so I don’t risk falling down the stairs.

ConspicuousCustard · 08/01/2021 20:29

What do you want people to do?

Sit in one room and not move incase they injure themselves?

Seriously, what would you have people do?

User56770987 · 08/01/2021 20:29

I just think outdoor exercise can be done safely and still have benefits to mental health. I'm not saying stay inside and don't do any exercise!

Rollingpiglet · 08/01/2021 20:29

I hope there aren't people sat on their sofas eating too much and not moving enough either. That also puts a strain on the NHS!

KylieKangaroo · 08/01/2021 20:29

@BlueBaubles12 Grin

tootsytoo · 08/01/2021 20:30

You are being ridiculous. Should we strap ourselves to the sofa out or fear we might slip on the kitchen floor? Don't be so silly

Sarahandduck18 · 08/01/2021 20:31

The NHSwill struggle more long term with the increase in MH issues and obesity.

I broke my foot at home.... misjudged the bottom step and rolled on my ankle. Sorry for being a burden on the NHS.

Would make more sense to tell the council to grit the pavements, not telll people off for setting foot on them?

User56770987 · 08/01/2021 20:33

Clearly I'm in the minority so far. That's OK. People are taking my point in a ridiculous way. I didn't say stay on your sofa.

When 'major incidents' are declared in hospitals its about the here and now and firefighting, not months in the future.

Awaits other NHS workers to join this and back me up on this...

There's a happy medium surely?

TopBants · 08/01/2021 20:34

I think BlueBaubles has won this thread.

User56770987 · 08/01/2021 20:35

@XenoBitch I am not saying anything about genuine accidents. Of course these are going to go up in icy weather.
If you read my original post you'll see that it's about dangerous activities.
Hope your ankle gets better soon.

What about people who burn themselves cooking? Kids who run around the house, fall over a flat floor and then smash their teeth? My toddler did that just before last lockdown.

Evenstar · 08/01/2021 20:38

@BlueBaubles12 😂 thank you for the best laugh in days!

OverTheRainbow88 · 08/01/2021 20:38

It’s so sad we now live in a world where people despair at others for driving somewhere to
Exercise, and god forbid having some fun in the snow

DurhamDurham · 08/01/2021 20:40

I work for a mental health organisation. Running might be the only thing keeping someone going at present. Suicides have increased month on month for ages now. If the NHS can't cope with some falls and broken bones then it's underfunded, the two hospitals I visit regularly as part of my job have almost empty A&E departments so I'm sure they'll manage with some sledging injuries today. My daughter is an NHS nurse, she was out sledging with her two year old today as it was her long overdue day off. She should have stayed in for fear of overburdening the very hospital she works at Hmm

Baileysforchristmas · 08/01/2021 20:40

My friend hasn’t gone outside her house since March, she’s terrified of catching Covid, if I say i’ve gone out, she’d say stay home, stay safe, save lives. She was cutting veggies in the kitchen, she cut through her tendons in her finger, she had to have an operation to sew them back together and then had to have rehab for every week for 3 weeks, there is risk in everything we do even if we don’t leave the house.

Pipandmum · 08/01/2021 20:41

Most accidents happen in the home. Accidents in icy conditions happen, but probably mostly from people doing normal activities (needed even under lockdown) such as going to work, school (many kids still going, and as they are young, need to be taken by and adult) and shops.
And the doctors treating an ankle break may not be the same as those treating covid patients. I was in hospital today for a routine eye exam and there were plenty people there waiting for similar.
I wouldn't however take up mountain climbing at the moment.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/01/2021 20:41

You’re right. In fact I’m going to sleep on the sofa and wee in the kitchen sink tonight so I don’t risk falling down the stairs.
Grin Make sure to lay cushions on the floor in case you roll off the sofa.

This thread is inane. Pretty sure it's a wind up on the part of the OP
