Why do people not realise that this behaviour also puts massive strain on the NHS?

Running/jogging on icy pavements
Non essential journeys in the car on snowy/icy roads
'but we' re allowed out to exercise'
Careering down really steep hills on sledges. Facebook and WhatsApp full of this. Activity of choice in lockdown it seems.

I'm so sick of people not realising the potential harm they could be doing to already massively under pressure hospitals.

Feel so sorry for nhs doctors and nurses and hcps. Take your busiest day at work and multiple it by 100 and then throw in the mix that people's lives are in their hands- probably still not even close to the stress they are under.

I totally despair.

OP posts:
Hotcuppatea · 08/01/2021 20:44

I've already told my children that if it snows where I am, they're playing truant for the day and we're all going sledging. We've got to take our joy where we can find it these days.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/01/2021 20:46

Best stop doing D.I.Y in case a stab myself with the screw driver. Done that before covid and it bloody hurt too.

cheeseismydownfall · 08/01/2021 20:46

Oh dear OP you are getting a right bashing, but actually I do think you have a point. I'm not hiding under my sofa, but our family has made minor adjustments based on how very much we want to avoid hospital right now e.g. DH is riding on his turbo trainer rather than going out on icy roads - a risk he would probably weigh up differently in normal circumstances.

Everleigh2021 · 08/01/2021 20:46

My friend fell and broke her shoulder putting the Christmas decks back in the loft......this was after she had been for a run!!

Hope you’re including kids on bikes and in playgrounds and on trampolines in the garden in your dangerous activities list

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/01/2021 20:47

Dh broke leg last week walking dog
It happens
It's awful the nhs are struggling but accidents happen

RachelRosie · 08/01/2021 20:47

I actually think OP has a valid point. We've not sat in glued to the sofa but we have certainly been more cautious in the activities we do. Last thing we want is us to A&E adding to the problem.

randomsabreuse · 08/01/2021 20:48

House isn't big enough for a padded room big enough for the kids to run around, preferably 2 separate padded rooms.

Stayed in all day Wednesday as too icy, both kids lapping the sitting room at speed, leaping on and off the sofa, bouncing off each other (age 5 and 2) and climbing everything in sight.

Careful sledging (considering run off options) much safer than cooping them up.

I'm also walking and running outside, but being careful about time and location - sticking to sensible paths (rough tarmac), the gravel track or trails and only going out in daylight. Needed for my sanity though or I'd be in a major crisis!

annevonkleve · 08/01/2021 20:50

Well it's not icy where I am, and when it is, I avoid the icy bits.

You can't run (or walk come to that) on icy roads because you fall over. So if you see runners running, it's not that icy.

Jrobhatch29 · 08/01/2021 20:50

We are going sledging tomorrow. My little boys have worked hard all week and deserve some fun. More accidents happen in the home. My DS2 is being assessed for adhd and has split his head open twice and had a bad burn, all of which needed an a&e visit because he is bouncing off the walls inside.

LovingLen · 08/01/2021 20:53

I just posted on another thread that accidents are just as likely to happen in the home, I sprained my foot just walking on the living room carpet - my slipper stuck to it and my foot caught in it and bent - it was swollen for weeks

Thewinterofdiscontent · 08/01/2021 20:53

People are going facetious but in my town, the car parks around green spaces have all had to shut due to numbers.
We are a rural area yet everyone chooses to run around the same footpaths, the same few beauty spots, the same parks.
Conversely cyclists chose the most dangerous twisty roads where they are sure to hold up vehicles rather than cycle paths or dual carriages for time trials.
Stay home. It’s a few weeks,

Saucery · 08/01/2021 20:54

I nearly went arse over tit getting out of my car to go to work in a school this morning, to look after KW children, including frontline NHS workers who would have had to put my broken wrist/ankle/jaw back together.
Where do I stand on your Moral-Ometer Of Worthiness?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/01/2021 20:56

Sometimes, just for the sheer thrill of it and knowing the risk, I run about about with SCISSORS . So far, so good, but you never know... Phew... Grin

SpasandStripes · 08/01/2021 20:58

I broke both arms just waking down the street stone cold sober on a summer’s day.

I will be continuing to run outdoors.

Speakeasy22 · 08/01/2021 20:58

Some of the replies are absurd OP. Of course when the conditions are treacherous and accidents are more likely it makes sense to moderate your activities for a few days until it's safer.

FalseAlarm1 · 08/01/2021 20:58

I agree with you OP and shocked by the other posts. We’ve got lots of snow today, would love to go sledging but it’s not essential so we haven’t. So easy to slip over and the NHS just don’t need any extra patients

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2021 20:58

I know where you are coming from OP but as soon as I read your post I thought 'brace yourself' for all the justifications of people doing whatever they want because they can and tales of accidents at home.

My Mum fell over on an icy pavement this morning and took my Dad with her (both 80s) while they were having their daily walk that must not be missed. Luckily they are both ok.

Saucery · 08/01/2021 20:59

You do realise you are all that’s wrong with society, I presume?
amitoooldforthisshit · 08/01/2021 21:00

it isn't peoples fault for the government underinvesting in the HNS. Fact is if the government had planned and prepared properly we wouldn't be in this mess, lockdown or no lockdown

LovingLen · 08/01/2021 21:01

In fact the home is the most common place for accidents to happen - poor NHS

Springfern · 08/01/2021 21:01

I once had an allergic reaction to a condom...so I guess sex is off the table as well Sad

No, but they just have to do their own risk assessments so that things don't get any worse.
hayleysmiles · 08/01/2021 21:01

Just when you think threads can't get anymore ridiculous

RumHoney · 08/01/2021 21:01

I've seen a Facebook post from a friend who is a consultant radiologist tonight, saying pretty much the same as the OP. Be sensible people.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2021 21:01

Comparison between accidents at home and what the OP is describing are ridiculous as ever.
