Why do people not realise that this behaviour also puts massive strain on the NHS?

Running/jogging on icy pavements
Non essential journeys in the car on snowy/icy roads
'but we' re allowed out to exercise'
Careering down really steep hills on sledges. Facebook and WhatsApp full of this. Activity of choice in lockdown it seems.

I'm so sick of people not realising the potential harm they could be doing to already massively under pressure hospitals.

Feel so sorry for nhs doctors and nurses and hcps. Take your busiest day at work and multiple it by 100 and then throw in the mix that people's lives are in their hands- probably still not even close to the stress they are under.

I totally despair.

Only if you stay on the sledge.

DaydreamBeliever clearly considered this- that's why they advised getting a grip. Helps one to stay safely seated.

Clearly I'm in the minority so far. That's OK. People are taking my point in a ridiculous way. I didn't say stay on your sofa.

When 'major incidents' are declared in hospitals its about the here and now and firefighting, not months in the future.

Awaits other NHS workers to join this and back me up on this...

Completely agree. I work in the NHS the amount of 40year olds who think now is the time to start trampolining or skating. Or 60 year olds who think now is the time to get up on their roof!!! Plus I find a lot of people think their situation is exceptional and they can break rules but if everybody does that then it’s not a lockdown. Why is it so difficult to stay at home, read a book, watch a film, paint a picture, learn a language, have a family zoom call etc what people don’t understand is the hospitals are overwhelmed with covid patients a lot are aged 50-65 who were fit and well but now are on high amounts of oxygen and unable to walk due to breathlessness. They are literally gasping for breath!! What people don’t get is that if your involved in a RTA there may not be space in ITU because of covid patients or if you break a bone sledging in the snow you may be fit and well but with a broken bone and end up with covid whilst in hospital. You could die or if you make it be discharged home and infect a vulnerable member of your family. They may not be so lucky. We’re not asking you to go to war or to commit a crime, we’re just asking that you stay at home

Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2021 21:24

What the hell else do you expect people to do as exercise???!

LovingLen · 08/01/2021 21:25

It's worth investing in a pair of yaktrax, they are particularly useful after it has snowed a bit and melted into that slippy thick ice. We have several pairs for different conditions, DH wears them for running.

CherryPieface · 08/01/2021 21:25

I agree OP, I’m in Glasgow and we’ve had a mixture of black ice and snow for nearly two weeks. Our minor injuries unit is at full capacity and they have asked people to avoid the ice if we can. Our local park is packed with skaters and sledgers with no social distancing. I know they are outside but the sheer numbers are worrying. There are lots of other ways to get outside and enjoy the glorious winter weather.

Not NHS but having broken glasses lost bank cards and had flat tyres recently I’m staying in. Im very very lucky and have essentials in and a garden so I’m spending as much time as I can outside (no power tools 😉) and minimise the risk of seeing anyone outside my household.
Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2021 21:26

" Why is it so difficult to stay at home, read a book, watch a film, paint a picture, learn a language, have a family zoom call etc "

Very hypocritical to say that after health workers have spent my entire lifetime telling me I should exercise and now even basic activity of walking to work and walking in the office has been taken away. Fine, close everything down, but don't expect me to become 100% couch potato. That can hardly be good for the NHS either.

DotBall · 08/01/2021 21:27

You’re not being unreasonable OP. I have a horse and could go miles off-site from the livery, but we don’t. We stay on-site (no road riding) and school or use the extensive land around the livery. No big jumps, no cross-country. Sensible.

Changemaname1 · 08/01/2021 21:27

@TopBants shit . I didn’t think that through did I . Piss in a cup it is then

thevassal · 08/01/2021 21:28
@XenoBitch I am not saying anything about genuine accidents. Of course these are going to go up in icy weather.
If you read my original post you'll see that it's about dangerous activities.
Hope your ankle gets better soon.
except for the fact that the ONE newspaper article you found to "back up" your point only talked about genuine accidents from people walking/driving on un-salted roads, with not even a suggestion that any of the injuries had come from from performing dangerous or unnecessary activities at all.

PurpleDaisies · 08/01/2021 21:30

Exercise is vital for mental health and being literally only at home all the time is awful.

We are hacking on roads - no arena and clay fields. Only trotting and walking.
IPead · 08/01/2021 21:31

You know what? My 7 and 5 year olds cannot legally see their friends/peers/extended family for the next 6 weeks, minimum. Yet again they’ve had their schooling taken away, as well as all of their extra curricular activities.
If it snows, we’re going sledging.

LovingLen · 08/01/2021 21:32

I have only been out once this week to the shops and have sat on my arse the rest of the time which I'm quite happy with but DH has to go out for daily exercise and a lot of it so I can see that people do need to.

IPead · 08/01/2021 21:33

Why is it so difficult to stay at home, read a book, watch a film, paint a picture, learn a language, have a family zoom call etc

Because I have a 6, a 4 and a 2 year old who aren’t all that bothered by learning languages, lying around reading novels or speaking to people over screens. They also don’t leave me much time to do those things.
They need fun, and exercise, and fresh air.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2021 21:33

All the snow we had last week has now gone thank goodness and the forecast is such that we might not get minus temperatures every single day, so things are looking up in that respect. For now anyway.

IPead · 08/01/2021 21:34

Sorry two of my kids lost a year in the second post, my head is frazzled.

So you do go out to exercise then. OP said we should all be staying in watching TV.
BikerWife · 08/01/2021 21:35

I'm an NHS nurse in an acute hospital and a keen runner, I've been out today on my day off for a lovely slippy run Grin

The list of what some people don't think other people should be doing just seems to be getting longer and longer!

StCharlotte · 08/01/2021 21:35

I can see your point OP and goung running on ice isn't the best idea but would you really deny kids (and grown up kids) the pure joy of sledging and playing in the snow when there is absolutely fuck all else to do right now?

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2021 21:35

@SparklingLime if you have no doubt I've witnessed it, presumably you also have no doubt that the NHS has cried wolf too often in the past.

I know the situation is very, very serious; I am however astonished at the lack of NHSE planning that is being booted to the door of the Government. I find it v interesting that the CEO of the NHS has only turned up in public since a vaccine was confirmed. I believe Sir Simon was a special adviser to Mr Blair. The same Mr Blair who announced that the first shots only should be given. How interesting that the man who declined to confirm whether his own DC had had MMR on the basis of confidentiality thus causing a crisis of confidence because nobody thought he and Cherie had vaccinated their own dc, thinks it appropriate he may now have a vaccination opinion. Hmm

LadyCatStark · 08/01/2021 21:36

Oh FFS. There’s literally nothing to go and no joy to be had in life. Whilst I agree that running in ice with no special equipment is daft and I haven’t been able to do my run all week, we have to take what little joy we can when we can especially children. Sledging or even just a walk in the snow will bring a lot of desperately needed joy to children.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 08/01/2021 21:36

YANBU OP. I saw someone walking home from tesco earlier, carrying massive bags and I thought to myself, irresponsible idiot. All it takes is for a pigeon to fly at them, knock them over, slip on their bananas and BOOM broken bones requiring attention. Attention we dont have because Covid is the only thing that happens these days.

I know people like to add on their own rules to what the government has advised but its getting ridiculous now.

Notthissticky · 08/01/2021 21:37

@TopBants

Uh-oh... I'm pregnant, shoot me now!

We can't. THINK OF THE BURDEN ON THE NHS!

Erm, if you do it properly you'd only be inconveniencing the coroner and the funeral director... Just sayin'😂
